He’d ordered Donald to monitor Victoria closely and report any developments immediately.
He smirked to himself. Victoria, already causing trouble again after just a few days?
“Report,” Carter answered sharply.
Then he suddenly shot to his feet. “What? An accident?”
Isabella had been quietly eating, but at Carter’s outburst she looked up, immediately noticing the panic on his face.
“I’m on my way.” Hanging up, Carter grabbed his jacket and rushed out without another word.
“Carter!” Isabella called after him.
He paused briefly, glancing back. “Take care of Jenarth at home. There’s an emergency with Victoria.” Without waiting for a response, he left.
Isabella stood motionless, watching him leave. As soon as he heard about Victoria’s accident, the worry was etched all over his face, impossible to hide.
So Carter still cared about Victoria.
What did it matter? Victoria’s fate was already sealed.
Go ahead, Carter! By now, Victoria’s probably already dead. You’re just rushing to see her corpse.
She’d never imagined Madilyn would harbor such hatred for Victoria. She hadn’t even needed to lift a finger. Madilyn had taken out Victoria all by herself.
Perfect!
Now, nothing stood in her way.
Madilyn had no choice but to cooperate. They were allies now, whether Madilyn liked it or not.
Carter sped toward the hospital. Donald had texted the address immediately. When Carter saw the St. Mary’s Hospital sign, he froze.
The most expensive hospital in Capaville? Since when could Victoria afford this place?
He didn’t have time to wonder. He rushed inside, searched around, and finally made it to the VIP suite on the top floor.
Victoria had been in a car accident. Visions of twisted metal and blood flashed through his mind. His steps grew unsteady.
Victoria was injured!
The thought echoed relentlessly in his mind.
With trembling hands, he pushed the door open, only to find Victoria and Robert cozied up together, happily sharing dessert. Carter stood frozen in the doorway, then finally managed to choke out, “Victoria…”
Victoria and Robert were sharing some desserts when Carter’s voice cut through the quiet room. St. Mary’s Hospital had truly impressed her – she’d merely asked about sweets, and a nurse arrived with a full selection for them.
Just as they were relaxing, Carter’s sharp tone broke the calm.
Victoria frowned. She’d finally found some peace – why was she hearing his voice again? She thought she’d left that man behind for good.
“What’s this performance about, Victoria?” Carter snapped the moment he saw her sitting comfortably. He was fuming. On his way there, he’d been so frantic he nearly drove into a streetlamp.
Despite everything, Victoria had once been his wife. Even after the divorce, hearing she was in some kind of accident had worried him.
He’d rushed into the hospital, almost tripping on the stairs in his haste. He’d been terrified – scared he’d find her lifeless, beyond help.
For one brief moment, he’d even thought that if she made a scene, he might let it slide – as long as she was okay.
But what did he walk in on? A cozy scene of a mother and son lounging in a hospital bed, casually enjoying desserts. Was this the “serious accident” he’d been told about?
Carter saw red. Has Donald lied to me?
He’d raced over here only to find this – was it all a setup to see if he still cared? Was she testing him?
If this was her idea of playing games, she’d gone too far.
Victoria stared at Carter in the doorway, momentarily stunned. Then her face twisted in pure disgust.
“What’s your problem, Carter?” she fired back. He was glaring at her like he wanted to strangle her.
“I should be asking you that! Did you stage all this just to get my attention? You wanted me to come running?” Carter marched to the bedside, his eyes sweeping over her. Aside from some bandages, she looked perfectly fine. Was this the “nearly crushed by a truck” accident he’d heard about?
The more Victoria listened, the more annoyed she got. “Who wants your attention? Who do you think you are?” she shot back coldly. “Who even let you in? Weren’t you the one who said we were over and you never wanted to see me again?”
“So this is the ‘almost crushed by a truck’ situation Donald mentioned? You look completely fine. Could you be any more dramatic?” Carter retorted. “I never thought you’d sink this low just to get me to notice you.”
“Donald? You had someone tailing me?” It finally clicked. Victoria almost laughed at the absurdity. He hadn’t come to see if she was hurt; he’d come to accuse her of not being injured enough.
“I…” Carter showed no remorse. “Someone like you isn’t worth following. I just didn’t want you using my name to scam people and ruin the company’s reputation. You think I care about you? Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Carter, are you really this full of yourself, or are you having some early midlife crisis?” Victoria’s expression darkened. “I want nothing to do with you. Even if I staged an accident to get attention, it would be to catch the eye of someone worthwhile – not you.”
She turned away, popping the last piece of dessert into her mouth. The sweet taste lifted her mood instantly.
“Victoria, you planned all this – the divorce, this stunt. You’re just playing games, aren’t you? Well, I’m here now. You have three minutes to apologize if you want me to forgive you.”
Looking at the arrogant man beside her bed, Victoria had finally had enough.
“Carter, narcissism is a real illness. You should get that checked. We’re in a hospital. Should I book you an appointment?”
“Victoria, you – ” Carter’s face turned red with rage. His fists clenched. “How dare you talk to me like that?”
“Watching you act like a fool is honestly entertaining. How did you ever become president of Myers Group? If you weren’t the heir, I doubt Charles would’ve handed it to you.” She laughed mockingly.
“How can anyone be this full of themselves? And Isabella isn’t exactly a catch either, is she? She hasn’t even managed to get you to marry her, and she lets you run around, getting in everyone’s way.”
Carter stared at her defiant face and said coldly, “Victoria, you’re still hung up on what happened between me and Isabella, right? What will it take for you to believe me? There’s nothing between us.”
“Ha! You think I’m still hung up? I’m over it. You two could get married right here for all I care; it’s none of my business.
“Your life doesn’t affect me anymore. I don’t want to see you, not even a little bit.” Victoria pointed firmly toward the door. “Carter, do me a favor and get out! Don’t waste my time – I’m trying to eat.”
“Victoria, I never knew jealousy could change someone so much. There’s nothing between me and Isabella, yet you keep badmouthing her every chance you get. You’re so determined to provoke me; you’re not even the same person anymore.”
“Get out!” Victoria had had enough. Arguing with this fool was just draining her energy.
“Victoria, what do you want? What will it take for you to go back to how you used to be?” Carter was starting to realize he missed the old Victoria – sweet, gentle, and always by his side.
Victoria struggled to keep her temper in check. She desperately wanted to teach this arrogant, clueless man a lesson herself.
“You want the old me back? Fine, that’s easy. Send Isabella and her kid abroad, cut all contact, and I’ll go right back to being your devoted wife. Do we have a deal?” Victoria’s tone was light, but her raised eyebrow hinted at the challenge.
“You…” Carter stared at her, shocked she would suggest such a thing. So this was all just a power play?
“You keep saying Isabella means nothing to you? Then prove it. Send them away with some money as compensation for saving your life, and never speak to them again.
