The school has secrets

Successfully unlocked!

I had spent weeks trying to piece together the clues-the cryptic warnings from Max, the terrifying reality of Bastian’s words, the fact that I somehow had abilities I shouldn’t have. So did Max and Nate.

And now? I was done waiting for someone to tell me the truth. I was finding it myself.

“The school and our history,” was all I said. It was all I could say without putting his life at risk.

Ethan must have sensed my seriousness, because his teasing expression faded.

“Jiselle,” he said after a moment, his voice lower. “I didn’t want to assume before, but… after what happened with Max, I’ve started noticing things.”

I hesitated, looking at him warily. “What kind of things?”

Ethan ran a hand through his hair. “Every wolf in second to fourth year-all of them-they have the same wound on their palm.”

I stiffened. My fingers curled into my hoodie instinctively.

He noticed. His green eyes sharpened.

“You know about it, don’t you?” he asked.

Shit

I turned away quickly. “Ethan-“

“Don’t even think about lying to me, Jizzy,” he said sharply. “What the hell is going on? Did Max ever tell you?”

“No, he couldn’t. It would kill him, as I assumed you asked Nate and he told you the same. What he told me… I don’t know if I can tell you.” my twin.

Guilt gnawed at my chest. I hated lying to him. I felt awful for keeping the fact that I someone had abilities from my t But if I told him the truth-about my gift, about Max’s warnings-he’d be in just as much danger as I was. Ethan scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re hiding something.”

Before I could respond, the massive wooden doors of the library came into view. I exhaled slowly, relieved for the distraction.

“We’ll talk later,” I muttered, pushing open the door.

Ethan shot me a look but didn’t press further.

The library was eerily quiet at this hour, the faint scent of aged paper thick in the air. The walls stretched high with towering bookshelves, the dim glow of enchanted lanterns casting long shadows.

Ethan shoved his hands into his pockets. “Alright. Where do we start?”

“Anything ancient, I murmured, scanning the shelves. “Most likely in folklore.”

Ethan frowned. “Folklore?”

I nodded, running my fingers along the spines of books. “The best way to hide the truth is by turning it into a fairytale.”

He considered that before shrugging. “Alright, mystery girl. Lead the way.”

For the next two hours, we combed through old records, flipping through fragile pages filled with stories of ancient wolves, powerful rulers, and creatures that could shift the balance of nature itself.

Most of it was useless.

Iran a frustrated hand through my hair, sighing.

Ethan plopped down beside me, tossing a book onto the table. “This is a joke,”

I shot him a glare. “You wanted to come, remember?”

“Yeah, but I didn’t expect to be flipping through bedtime stories at three in the damn morning.”

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t argue. Maybe this was a mistake.

Maybe

Thunk

A book fell from the shelf behind me.

I jumped, my pulse spiking.

Ethan frowned, standing immediately. “What was that?”

I turned, scanning the shelves. Slowly, I reached for the fallen book, its th

The title made my stomach twist.

The Forgotten Five – Legends of the Gifted Wolves.”

I barely heard Ethan mutter something as I slowly opened the book, my breath hirebi Ancient wolves with supernatural abilities beyond ALL erased from history

A cold sensation curled through my veins,

This this was it. But as I skimmed through more pages, I realized that they were…. torn out.

Ripped right from the spine. Someone was trying really hard to hide something

A creak echoed from the library entrance.

Ethan tensed immediately.

I shoved the book into my hoodie. Shit.

The door groaned open slowly.

A shadow spilled into the dim light, a figure stepping inside.

My stomach dropped.

We had been caught

A slow, measured voice cut through the ce

“Now what exactly are you two doing in the restricted section at this hour?”

Instructor Havelyn.

Shit.

*Jisclie

“Still don’t wish you had listened to me and stayed home?” Ethan asked, his voice hushed but laced with amusement.

I shot him a glare. “Not a chance.”

Regret wasn’t in my vocabulary-not when I was this close to finding something. Not when the answers I had been searching for were buried somewhere in this godforsaken library.

But right now, I had a much bigger problem.

Hadelyn stood in front of us, his arms folded, his expression unreadable as he watched Ethan and me like we were nothing more than insects he could crush beneath his boot.

The dim library lights cast sharp shadows across his face, making him look even more menacing.

What was he even doing up at this hour? Let alone in the library? How did he find us?

Did someone see us and snitch? Did we somehow trigger some kind of alarm?

Suddenly, Nate’s words from our first assignment together came back to me. They know.

Hell, they always know. How do people get away with anything around here?

“What exactly,” he drawled, “are you two doing here?”

Ethan straightened, his entire demeanor shifting.

“We were looking for a book for class,” he said smoothly. “Jiselle needed some clarification for- “Bullshit”

Hadelyn’s voice was as sharp as a blade, slicing through Ethan’s lie without hesitation.

My pulse pounded violently, I need to get us out of this.

Hadelyn wasn’t buying it. Not for a second. And the way his cold, calculating gaze swept over us told me exactly where this was going.

I swallowed. If we didn’t convince him, we were dead.

And if he found the book tucked away in my hoodie, he’d know I saw what Max did that day, and we’d be dead. Max would have been tortured for nothing.

Ethan, ever the perfect son of an Alpha, held his ground. “Sir, I know the situation looks odd, but I assure you. My sister has an assignment due in the morning and she had forgotten to get the book before-

“I don’t give a damn what excuse you think you’ve got,” Hadelyn cut him off. The library is off-limits after hours. So tell me -what the hell were you really doing here?”

My breath caught in my throat.

“We got permission from the librarian,” he lied smoothly. “She’s quite easy to convince when given the right payment.” Which wasn’t entirely a lie. Miss Rudding would let you do anything once she was getting something in return. It was common knowledge around here.

Hadelyn knew this too, based on the way his jaw ticked. That led me to believe that we were searching in vain for something useful. Everyone knew Miss Rudding couldn’t be trusted and definitely wouldn’t leave confidential information in her care. No wonder the one book I found that seemed useful was torn up

Why didn’t I think about that before I risked my life and Ethan’s?

“If we should just wait until morning when she is awake, I’m sure you will find that our story matches hers.”

“I’m sure.” Hadelyn narrowed his eyes as if he was trying to see through us.

Ethan was doing a damn good job of sticking up for us, but I could already see it-the way Hadelyn’s expression darkened, the way he tilted his head slightly as if already deciding our fate.

He wasn’t going to let this go

Sexist ass school.

“What was that?” Hadelyn’s sharp voice yanked me from my thoughts.

Shit. Did I say that out loud?

“Nothing, sir,” I mumbled quickly

Hadelyn’s eyes narrowed,

And then, just like that, his posture shifted, his expression smoothing into something colder, more deliberate “Both of you,” he said, voice eerily calm, “follow me.”

My stomach dropped.

No. No, no, no

I darted a quick glance at Ethan, whose jaw was tight, his fingers twitching at his sides. He knew.

I knew.
