Wait. What about Skylar, then? Elspeth looked at Skylar and noticed the awkward smile she was putting on.
“You should take her home.”
“Why should I? I don’t like her.”
Elspeth sighed.
“Just this once.”
“I don’t like the smell of her perfume. She came by herself, so she can go home by herself,”
Jethro refused.
Delighted, Jethro took her to Luna Bar. It was packed, and Jethro was holding Elspeth’s hand tightly. If it weren’t for the crowd, Elspeth would have thought Jethro
They were so close together, they could kiss.
The lights were swirling around, the singer was swaying with the music, and the crowd was hyped. Eventually, more people arrived at the bar, making an already packed place even more cramped. Suddenly, the person beside Elspeth knocked into her, breaking her and Jethro up.
Elspeth gasped. If she were to fall among the crowd, she could be badly hurt. A bad case of stampeding just happened in an entertainment center in Herodonia, where a lot of people died. Will I die tonight?
Yet, she didn’t fall. Instead, she fell into someone’s embrace. It was a familiar embrace. When she opened her eyes, she saw Callum. His face was dark as if he was holding his anger back.
“Callum? Why are you here?”
As expected, Callum didn’t answer her question. Instead, he pushed her up. Elspeth scratched her nose and took a few steps back.
“Thank you.”
“Welcome. Be careful next time.”
And then he left.
Elspeth opened her mouth, but she held back what she wanted to say. Forget it.
“Where are you, Elspeth?”
Jethro called out to her from behind.
Elspeth turned around. Just when she was about to call out to him, she smelled a familiar scent again. Callum had returned after leaving.
“What’s wrong? Do you need anything?”
Elspeth wondered what he was doing.
“There are a lot of thugs here and they tend to stir up trouble. You should go home if you have nothing else to do here.”
Elspeth was wondering why he was saying that. For some reason, the mention of ‘thugs’ reminded her of Jethro. Weird. I have a feeling he’s talking about Jethro. No, no way.
“But…”
Someone’s looking for me.
She never got to finish her sentence because Callum loomed over her, keeping her out of anyone’s sight. Not even Jethro noticed her when he was just inches away from her. Only when Jethro had left did Callum step aside. Then, he pretended not to know Elspeth.
That made Elspeth snap. You’re taken, so stop flirting with me. What the hell are you doing? She shot him a glare.
“What do you want?”
“Okay.”
“No!”
“Okay.”
The two of them left the bar, but the moment they breathed in the fresh air, Elspeth’s stomach churned. Unable to help it, she bent over and retched.
Jethro’s face fell.
“You can’t do this.”
“It’s getting late. Go home. I’m fine, so don’t worry about me.”
Elspeth shoved him away and waved him goodbye. I need to stay away from him.
Jethro didn’t push her as well. Courting Elspeth needed time. He said a listless goodbye and left with the medicines. When he came across the first trash can, Jethro glanced at the medicines and tossed them into the bin. This is useless.
…
Elspeth had a nightmare that night. In her nightmare, Jethro was choking her, his eyes red with lust and his body tense. He was trying to assault her, and in the end, she was forced to marry him. Elspeth woke up with a start, her forehead drenched in sweat. She touched her head, her heart still thumping wildly.
It was just a dream, but Jethro could be crazy enough to do that. I need to come up with a plan in case that happens. She got up and made herself a toast, then it was time for work. However, when she got to the car park, she saw Jethro looking refreshed, and he had a big smile on his face.
“Moring, Elsie. Your loyal guard is here to take you to work.”
Scared by the dream, Elspeth didn’t really want to see him.
“I know, but I’m not going with you.”
“That makes your sixty-sixth refusal. I’m used to it.”
He turned around and extended his arm.
“Will you come with me today, my lovely lady?”
“Stop flirting. It’s giving me goosebumps.”
Elspeth wanted to toss her toast on his face.
For once, Jethro wasn’t upset. Instead, his smile got bigger.
“Have you seen the news?”
Elspeth hadn’t. She spent her morning dressing herself up for work, but she lied,
“Yeah, yeah.”
“What do you think, then?”
Jethro looked expectant.
“Happy news, good news. Everyone loves it. What else?”
“So, you agree?”
Wait. Something’s off. She asked,
“What do you mean?”
“Oh. So, you haven’t read the news.”
Jethro looked down, dejected.
Surprised, Jethro said,
“Are you going to take back your decision?”
“It’s just an act. It’s not real. Besides, my grandpa is adamant about seeing my girl. I can’t find anyone else as good as you are.”
Jethro looked at her closely and nodded.
