Victoria narrowed her eyes at Robert. But Robert continued seriously, “I’m Mommy’s precious kid. Since she divorced that no-good, restless dad of mine, I take her last name now!”

Victoria sighed internally.

Eugene couldn’t help but chuckle at the introduction. “Nice to meet you, Robert. That’s a great name.”

Robert turned triumphantly to Victoria. “See, Mommy? I told you Robert Lewis sounds better!” Much better than Robert Myers, anyway.

Victoria quickly interjected, “Sorry, Mr. Rosewood, please don’t mind him. My son can be… a lot.”

Eugene’s smile remained. “It’s fine. Kids should be lively.”

“See, Mommy? He agrees with me!” Robert declared solemnly. “So from now on, I’m Robert Lewis, okay? You have to change my name at the kindergarten too!”

Victoria pressed her lips together. She forced a patient smile. “Sweetie, I just spilled my water. Could you go to the nurses’ station and get me another cup of water? Make sure it’s warm, please.”

Robert wanted to argue that there was a water pitcher right beside them, but one look at Victoria’s expression told him he’d pushed far enough. Taking the hint, he grabbed the cup and dashed out of the room.

“Sorry about that. He’s just very… outgoing,” Victoria apologized again for her son’s forwardness.

“He’s wonderful. You’re lucky to have a son like him,” Eugene said, his praise genuine. “If I had a kid like that, I’d be showing him off to everyone.”

Victoria breathed a quiet sigh of relief. Thank goodness Robert hadn’t heard that, or his ego would’ve been unstoppable.

“Mr. Rosewood, about my injury… it’s been treated. I was thinking…” Victoria began, wanting to say the wound wasn’t serious and she planned to check out.

“Ms. Lewis, please don’t worry. I’ve settled all the bills. You should stay until you’re fully recovered. If you need anything, just ask the staff,” Eugene said seriously. “You were hurt because of me. I’d feel terrible if you left like this.”

“But I…”

“Ms. Lewis, to be frank, I’m a businessman.” Eugene looked directly at her, his tone earnest. “I came to Capaville to finalize some major investments. The sums involved are… significant. That kind of attention brings trouble, as you’ve seen.”

Victoria listened. His simple explanation made sense.

Those “significant sums” had to be enormous.

“You didn’t have to explain your business to me,” Victoria replied simply.

“I did.” Eugene’s voice grew firmer. He held her gaze intently. “This incident pulled you into my problems. If the people targeting me decide to come after you because of it, that responsibility falls on me.”

Victoria saw the conviction in his eyes and fell silent, unsure how to respond.

Just as he said, if those who had wanted him dead had struck again, and she had been dragged into it because she saved him, she would have been in potential danger.

Seeing her hesitation, Eugene pressed on. “So, Ms. Lewis, from now on, if you ever feel unsafe, my people will ensure your protection.”

“I don’t…” The words “need it” died in her throat. Victoria looked at the determined man before her, hesitated for a beat, then offered a soft, resigned smile. “Fine. I’ll rest here for a few days. But please, Mr. Rosewood, wrap up your personal matters quickly. Let’s avoid any more trouble.”

The hospital felt more like a luxury hotel. With her injuries, Victoria really didn’t feel like being seen in public. Honestly, she just wanted to hide away for a while.

Staying put for a few days seemed like the best plan. She could rest up and leave once Eugene sorted out the remaining issues. No need to hurry.

Eugene gave a soft nod. “Alright, I’ll wrap things up quickly. Ms. Lewis, if you need anything at all while you’re here, just say the word.”

“Okay,” Victoria said quietly.

Just then, Robert returned with a glass of water – perfect timing. Eugene stood up. “I’ll let you two be. I’ve got things to handle, so I’ll take off. I’ll stop by again later.”

“Thanks for your help,” Victoria replied simply.

Eugene smiled and turned to go. As he passed Robert, he gently ruffled the boy’s hair.

Robert stood still, watching him leave. Only after the door closed did he hurry back to the bed and hand Victoria the water.

“Mommy, that handsome man seems really nice. Should we check him out?” Robert didn’t usually like anyone but his mom touching him, but this time, he hadn’t minded at all.

“Why would we check him out?” Victoria took a small sip.

“To see if he’s good enough to be your next husband! If this hot guy has more money than Carter, it’s a total knockout. His looks alone crush Carter, no comparison at all. But most importantly – is he single? If yes, he’s totally the one!”

“Pfft – ” Victoria choked on her water. She wiped her chin and glared. “You little troublemaker! One more word and you’re in trouble!”

“Mommy, don’t get mad. Anger gives you wrinkles!”

“Robert Myers! Are you trying to test my limits?”

“Mommy, I told you – I want to be called Robert Lewis now.”

Upstairs, in the hospital’s top-floor meeting room, a large screen showed the men who had started the attack – now on their knees, begging. Betraying the boss was a line they shouldn’t cross. Eugene always said guys like that weren’t worth a bullet.

To any normal person, the scene was hard to watch. As for the guys who messed up… they probably never wanted to go through it again and there wouldn’t even be a “next time” to begin with.

“Word’s out. This should make anyone else think twice before causing trouble. You’ll have some quiet for a while.”

The screen went dark. The man in the video was silent now.

Eugene didn’t speak. He leaned back into the sofa, lit a cigarette, but didn’t take a puff.

Landon frowned. “Everything’s handled. Why do you look so… blank?”

Still, Eugene didn’t answer. He just knit his brow slightly.

“Seriously?” Landon moved closer, confused. “What’s that look for? We cleaned it up fast and clean. You’re not happy? Wasn’t it fast enough?”

“If it took longer, I could’ve stayed with her a bit more,” Eugene muttered.

Landon stared, totally lost. “What? What’s wrong? What’s going on with him?”

He studied Eugene’s unusual expression. He’d known him for years, but that soft smile? That was as new and rare as flowers in the desert.

“Eugene, what’s with you – “

“Mr. Rosewood!”

Bruce walked in, cutting Landon off. He placed a folder on the table. “Ms. Lewis applied for the designer role at LOVE – Cosmos Group’s fashion brand.”

Eugene nodded lightly. “Yeah.”

“Which Ms. Lewis?” Landon’s eyes lit up. He snatched the file and opened it.

Victoria’s name was right there on the page. Landon grinned.

“Well, well – the pretty lady! Looks like we meet again.” He turned to Eugene, excited. “If she joins the Cosmos Group, she’ll be working under you!”

Eugene shot him a look. “You think she’s qualified? Her experience section is completely empty.”
