The driver floored the gas without hesitation.

“Ambush! Stay sharp!” Eugene’s voice was sharp.

Bruce snapped to attention. The bulletproof windows whirred shut. He turned, about to ask, “Mr. Rosewood, do you need – ” but the question stuck in his throat the moment he saw the blood on Victoria’s face.

“Go, go, go! Hurry up!” An accident had just happened back there. If those guys were bold enough to strike in public, they definitely had more people waiting. They needed to get to safety, fast.

“On it! Our men have been notified.” Bruce gave a quick nod as he sent out a rapid series of alerts.

The driver, who also served as Eugene’s bodyguard, knew his stuff. Their black car shot through the busy city streets, making a beeline for the secure location.

Victoria twisted in her seat to look back. The crowd outside was massive, but no one seemed to have noticed them. The whole incident had gone completely unseen. Every single person was staring at the crashed truck.

These killers were completely ruthless.

Someone had actually planted a sniper in the bustling city center.

The shot came from a perfect position. If it had hit Eugene, it would’ve been a public execution right there on the street. The consequences didn’t bear thinking about.

“Seems you’ve made some real enemies,” Victoria remarked, a sardonic smile directed at the man whose arm was still locked around her waist. “They want you gone, and they’re not playing games. If I get killed because of you, that’s just my bad luck.”

Eugene didn’t explain or argue. He just reached for the first aid kit and pulled out a wad of gauze.

“You’re bleeding. Let me handle that.” His voice was low, his eyes shadowed with something that looked like worry.

Victoria met his look and raised a brow.

Seriously? Is he just oblivious, or that full of himself? Doesn’t he get it? Someone just tried to pick him off with a sniper rifle! He almost died!

“I’m fine.” She grabbed the gauze from him and wiped at her cheek. The white material instantly bloomed crimson.

At the sight of blood, her face tensed.

She was hurt. When that bullet came, she’d wrenched him aside, saving his life. But she’d put herself right in the line of fire.

Just minutes ago, she’d been worried about facing her son’s lecture when she got home. Now? That was the least of her problems. She was on her own with this one.

“Mr. Rosewood, our backup is here,” Bruce cut in.

Eugene looked out the window. Several black SUVs had fallen in around them, sealing off the area. They were completely secure now.

The car didn’t slow.

Eugene’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and let it ring.

“Take us to St. Mary’s Hospital,” he ordered, dismissing the call.

“I don’t need a hospital. I – ” Victoria started to argue, but the look he gave her shut her up.

Fine. In her current state, going to the hospital was probably the right move.

St. Mary’s Hospital was the most exclusive private hospital in the city. Its doctors were the best – world-class specialists who outshone everyone else.

Their car pulled straight into the hospital’s private entrance. A medical team was already assembled and waiting the moment they stepped out.

“Director Moses, she’s your priority. No scars.” Eugene’s voice left no room for argument.

“Understood. I’ll see to her personally,” the senior-most doctor responded.

Director?

Victoria’s brow lifted. Well, he’s really something! Even the director of St. Mary’s Hospital listens to him.

“Miss, please follow our staff to the treatment room,” the director, David Moses, said, stepping forward respectfully.

“Alright.” Victoria didn’t argue. She went with them.

She’d saved him, and now he was footing the bill. Fair was fair.

But getting home late was one thing. How was she going to explain this to Robert?

Robert was too clever by half – she could never keep anything from him. Making up a story was pointless. She’d just have to tell him the truth.

With David accompanying her, Victoria walked to the treatment room. Eugene stayed with her all the way to the door, and even after it closed, he didn’t move an inch.

He stood there, eyes fixed on the door, waiting for it to open again.

Eugene’s phone buzzed once more. He ignored it, his attention never wavering.

The call rerouted to Bruce’s phone. Bruce checked the ID and moved away to take it privately.

It was Landon. He’d already dug up intel on the attackers.

“Tell Eugene the mercenaries were pros,” Landon reported. “After they were captured, every last one of them killed themselves.”

“Got it. I’ll tell Mr. Rosewood.” Bruce’s reply was brief. He started to hang up when Landon’s voice came through again.

“Looks like two different groups went after Eugene. And they weren’t working together.”

Bruce’s grip on the phone tightened. He glanced toward the treatment room where Eugene stood waiting, completely still. Bruce frowned.

“Here’s the deal… We found two separate teams have been to the scene. One group were mercenaries – real professionals. The others were just small-time thugs, not even worth our attention.”

Bruce stayed silent.

“The mercenaries are probably connected to those restless old men from the Rosewood family. As for the small fries… they’re complete amateurs. Wait – ” Landon’s voice suddenly jumped, sounding both shocked and curious. “Did Eugene piss off some woman? Is this some jealous ex coming for revenge?”

Bruce didn’t respond.

“Bruce, where is Eugene? Why isn’t he answering? Are you guys safe? He’s not hurt, is he?”

“I’ll call you back. Got to go.” Bruce cut him off, hanging up before Landon could say another word.

After ending the call, Bruce walked over to Eugene and quickly summarized Landon’s findings.

Two separate groups.

Eugene’s face turned even colder at the news.

He already knew who wanted him dead. But that second group… that was interesting.

A bunch of amateurs trying to kill him? Something didn’t add up.

Eugene remembered the runaway truck that had nearly hit Victoria and that innocent girl.
