“Damn it, Evelyn,” I muttered under my breath, my voice low, guttural. “You really think you can just disappear?”

I couldn’t pull my eyes away from Evelyn’s name. It stared back at me, those words burning into me like they were carved into my soul. Evelyn. I could feel my wolf stir within me. Every muscle in my body tensed.

Was Peter a fool, or was he trying to pull a fast one on me? Did he bring these divorce papers by mistake-or was he trying to get me to sign them without me even thinking?

Or maybe… maybe Evelyn was the one behind all of this.

I ground my teeth, and my vision flickered red for a second. My wolf was clawing at the edges of my control.

Damn it! I shook it off.

I jabbed the intercom button on my desk, my voice sharp, edged with the rage building inside me. “Collins, come to my office immediately.” I instructed.

As I waited, my wolf paced restlessly, itching for something, anything at all to tear apart. My hand kept moving, signing the contracts Peter had left behind, but the divorce papers… I couldn’t touch them.

I set the pen down with a finality that echoed through the empty office. All the papers were signed, except for that one, the one that carried her name.

I stared at it for what felt like an eternity. My claws wanted to tear it in half, but I couldn’t. I was better than that.

Am I, though?

The door clicked open, and Collins stepped in. I didn’t move, my gaze was still fixated on the paper.

“Alpha Declan?” His voice was softer than usual, like he was walking on eggshells.

I snapped back to reality, every nerve in my body taut. My hand moved, signing the damn divorce papers without a second thought.

Collins’s breath caught when he saw what I’d signed. He leaned in closer, his voice stuttering, his disbelief palpable. “Alpha Declan? This is…?” His eyes darted to the bottom of the page, and I saw him rub his eyes in disbelief.

Evelyn’s signature stared back at him in black ink, just as clear as it had been when I laid eyes on it.

Collins brows furrowed as he looked at my signature. I shoved the papers back into the stack with calm.

He looked up at me, but I didn’t offer him any answers. I just gave him that cold, empty stare, the one I always reserve for when the world gets too… personal.

We walked out of the office one after the other, the air between us thick with tension. As I reached the door, I tossed the stack of papers at Peter, who was waiting by the door.

“Since you’re so considerate of your staff,” I said, my lips curving into a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “I can’t exactly drag my feet, can I?”

My voice was low, almost casual, but inside? My wolf was howling.

Peter flinched. The air between us crackled, and I sense how tensed he was.

His unease was almost… delicious.

He was scared.

And that… made the wolf inside me feel a little too good.

He took another cautious glance at me as if suspicious, but I didn’t give him anything. My face was a mask, no warmth, no hint of anything. Just the cold, empty void.

He took the papers from my hand, his fingers lingering a little too long. “I’ll head out now, Alpha Declan.”

My gaze sharpened as he turned to go, the primal part of me coming alive with each step he took. I turned to Collins by beta.

“Get my car ready, we will follow him and find her”.

Evelyn’s POV

The movie was almost over. With a glance at my watch, I gathered Lana up in my arms. Peter should be here by now, I thought.

I decided to step out of the theater in hopes of seeing him. When I stepped out, I spotted his car, he had just arrived.

As I walked toward the car, he approached me with a smile on his face and asked softly “Is Lana sleepy?”

His eyes were already on the bundle in my arms, noticing her closed eyes.

I smiled softly, nodding, the warmth of the moment lingering. I settled into the back seat, Lana curled protectively in my arms.

We drove in silence, and I couldn’t help but let my gaze drift out the window. The night was deep now, the sky black and heavy. Tree shadows flickered past in endless rows, moving like ghosts at the edge of the sidewalk.

Lana felt so light in my arms, so small and fragile. She was so perfect and innocent. I gazed at her, watching her tiny, peaceful face, her little breaths steady and slow. It was a moment of peace.

Declan’s POV

My heart clenched as I watched her. I had followed Peter to this theatre, wondering what exactly he was doing here.

Then I saw her walking towards Peter.

“Alpha Declan, that looks like Luna Evelyn?” Collins’s voice was cautious, his words coming slower than usual as he glanced at me in the rearview mirror. He quickly looked away, no doubt sensing the storm brewing inside me.

I didn’t answer right away. My gaze was fixed, narrowed, watching Peter’s car disappear down the road, taking Evelyn with him.

That was definitely Evelyn. Even though it was a bit dark, I knew it had to be her.

My chest tightened. A growl built low in my throat, but I forced it down. The wolf inside me wanted to tear through everything.

Why couldn’t I sense her presence though? She was my mate right? And my wolf was heightened to her scent…but why?…why didn’t she have any scent.

That was when it hit me. She must be using scent blockers to prevent me from reaching her. That was the only explanation, they only reason I have been unable to find her.

She has been avoiding me only to be with Peter?

That wooden, lifeless lawyer she’d practically hand-picked and promoted. Did she really think he was better than me?

My teeth ground together, and the temperature in the car seemed to drop as my mood soured. Collins’ knuckles went white on the steering wheel, his breath hitching as he stared at me. He knew what I was capable of, and right now, he knew that whatever I was thinking wasn’t pretty.

“Alpha Declan,” Collins ventured again, his voice quieter this time, “looks like they’re heading toward the residential area near the suburbs. Should we follow?”

I didn’t respond right away. The growl in my chest was getting harder to suppress. I had no time for weakness now. She had some nerve. The image of her disappearing from the prison without a word when I’d cleared my schedule just for her, that still burned.

I should’ve expected it. But then she moved in with him… a lawyer who could barely hold his own in a conversation, let alone her bed.

My skin felt tight, my bones aching with the hunger to hunt. My wolf paced restlessly inside me, every instinct screaming at me to take what was mine.

“Follow them,” I muttered, my voice low and deadly.

As soon as the words left my mouth, Collins didn’t hesitate. He slammed the gas pedal down, the engine roaring to life as the car surged forward. I let my eyes stay locked on their car as we followed them, barely aware of the passing scenery.

They didn’t even notice us, didn’t notice the shadow trailing them as they turned, heading toward the house. That was the house Peter had stopped by at first before going to the movie theater. I had seen him take the documents he had brought for me to sign inside the house.

I was about to step out and follow him after a while but I saw him come back out and lock the entrance of his house. That was the clue I needed to know that Evelyn was not inside.

He got into his car and I had Collins follow slowly behind him. Now here we were again, back at the house.

When they pulled up to the house, I had Collins stop at a safe distance.

I stayed perfectly still, my gaze locked on the house. My breath was steady, but inside? My wolf was howling, clawing at the cage I kept it in, eager for what was about to come.

Evelyn’s POV

I stepped out of the car, Lana nestled in my arms, her small body warm against me. I tried to ignore the uneasy feeling crawling up my spine, but it was impossible to shake. I glanced over toward the alley, my gaze instinctively darting toward the shadows. There, at the far end, sat a car, its lights were off, blending into the darkness.

I couldn’t see who was inside, but the feeling of being watched hit me like a punch to the gut. My instincts screamed danger.

I forced myself to move, quickening my pace and holding Lana tighter to my chest. She stirred a little. I didn’t stop to look back, even though the unease twisted in my gut. My senses were sharp, too sharp, and everything about the air felt wrong.

When I reached the door, I breathed a little easier. Maybe I was just being paranoid for nothing. Was I though?

Inside, Collins was waiting, but his eyes immediately flicked to me when he saw my face. My face must’ve gone ashen because Collins looked startled. “What happened?”

I pressed my lips together, pushing the unease aside. “Nothing. I am just tired.”

Collins didn’t seem convinced, but he nodded anyway. “Then go get some rest.” His voice was gentle as he opened the bedroom door for me, the gesture was a very comforting one.

I pushed down my anxiety and nodded, forcing my body to relax, to calm the frantic thoughts racing through my mind.

About half an hour later, the light in my room finally flickered off and I slept off.

Declan’s POV

I waited for several hours outside before I got into the front door of the house and clicked it shut behind me, the sound instantly sharpening my senses. I froze, every instinct snapping to attention as my eyes darted toward the narrow hallway.

I let my gaze sweep over the modest furnishings, the simplicity of the space somehow making it feel even more foreign, even more wrong. She didn’t belong here. My eyes locked onto a bedroom door down the hallway, tightly closed, and something in me tightened.

She’s in there… right?

Doubt crept in, fleeting but heavy.

I moved forward, my shoes deliberately quiet, but even with the lightness I tried to give my steps, they still echoed down the hallway like the beat of my heart. The space felt suffocating, the short walk down the hall taking forever, like I was walking through time itself.
