To their surprise, the door was busted open. In walked Alyssa, her hair flinging and her eyes shining brightly.
She yelled, Jeremy Walsh! Are you really going to take your medications only when I’m here? You’re really playing with fire, aren’t you? What’s your game plan?”
The first thing that greeted her was Landon, who sat haphazardly on the couch. Her anger flared at the sight of the cigarette between his lips.
She swiftly snatched the cigarette, threw it on the floor, and crushed it beneath her heel.
She berated him, “Why the hell are you smoking here? Don’t you know that Jeremy can’t inhale smoke because of his lung injuries? Are you his friend or the Grim Reaper?”
Jeremy’s grin widened at Alyssa’s concerned actions.
“But… Lyse, I didn’t even light it!” Landon protested with a pitiful expression.
“Take your cigarettes and get out of here! Now!” Alyssa pointed angrily at the door. Landon shot Jeremy a pleading look with a downturned mouth.
Without even making eye contact with Landon, Jeremy calmly replied, “Listen to her and leave.”
Landon silently cursed Jeremy, considering him an unfaithful friend who had put romantic interests before their friendship.
Jeremy and Alyssa were alone in the room after Landon left. Alyssa had learned from Xavier that Jeremy had coughed up a significant amount of blood earlier that day, and this news deeply troubled her.
If Jeremy couldn’t survive this ordeal, or if he suffered from long-term side effects, she’d never be able to make up to him. The burden of guilt would haunt her every day.
She went up to his bed with a sour face and grabbed his wrist. Then, she started checking his pulse.
His eyes widened. Alyssa looked as serious as an experienced doctor. She announced, “Your condition is not looking great. You need to take your medications right away. You cannot wait until the next day!”
She was angered by his condition. Just as Alyssa was about to release his hand, he surprised her by wrapping her small, cold hand with his own.
His action took her aback. Her breathing was caught in her throat.
“I can tell it’s super cold out there from your hand.”
Jeremy’s rough fingertips lightly massaged the back of her hand. He felt sorry at the sight of her scars and croaked, “Sorry for making you come all the way at this hour.”
“If you feel sorry, you should take your medications on time! Why kick a fuss?” She tried to calm herself down and withdrew her hand from his grip. “Are you a baby or what? Do you need me to feed you your medications?”
“No, that’s not it,” explained Jeremy. He swallowed in frustration and whispered, “I couldn’t think of any other way to see you, Alyssa. I just wanted to meet with you.”
“Now that I’m here, can you please take your medications?” Alyssa questioned.
Jeremy lowered himself despite his usual aggressive and authoritative behavior, but that did not sway her.
She recalled Liam and Sean’s warning and felt a growing aversion and impatience toward Jeremy.
She glanced at her wristwatch and urged him, “Hurry up and take your medications. I need to go home to
Belbanks. We don’t often have Liam back for dinner. I don’t have time to waste on you!”
Her harsh words stung him, and he clenched his fists. She had once been his caring wife, but now her patience for him had worn thin.
He had no one to blame but himself for her change. He regretted his past behavior to no end.
The road to win back Alyssa’s affection was long and tenuous, but he wanted to give it a go until he could
“Alyssa, I am in the hospital because of you,” Jeremy argued.
Since Alyssa did not soften at his pitiful look, he shamelessly resorted to guilt-tripping for more time together. “I almost lost my life because of you. You can’t just leave me here and never ask about me.”
“What do you expect me to do, then?” She gave him a scalding glare.
“Take care of me until I’m discharged,” he proposed, his eyes fixed on her radiant face.
Alyssa burst into laughter at the audacity of his request. She retorted, “I’ve never met anyone as shameless as you.”
Indeed. Jeremy was aghast at his behavior, but he was merely imitating Landon.
He might not have pursued women before this, but he had watched Landon going after ladies. Any female would succumb to a man’s passionate pursuit.
He was clueless about the passionate part of the equation, but the least he could do was to execute the pursuit.
“Listen carefully, Jeremy. I’m not your wife or your house servant. I have no reason to look after you,” she began coldly. “You didn’t appreciate my previous attempts to care for you, and you even found it annoying. But you’re begging for me to stay now. Is there something wrong with your head?”
“That’s because I love you, Alyssa Taylor!” Uncertain of the best way to win her heart, he could only confess his feelings with a passionate and sincere gaze. “I don’t care what you think of me. You can hate me or be disgusted by me. It doesn’t matter.”
“I love you, Alyssa Taylor. I’ve fallen for you.”
Alyssa held her breath and stumbled backward without knowing it. Only she would understand the mixed feelings from hearing Jeremy’s love confession.
They could hear each other’s heart beating in the silence.
“I would have accepted your confession right away if it happened in the three years we were married. But it’s too late now. I told you before that my feelings for you had expired. I no longer love you,” Alyssa responded with a stoic look in her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I know my confession comes too late, but I’m not one to give up when I set my mind to something,” Jeremy argued, his forehead dotted with sweat.
He wanted to go up to her but feared that he might scare her off. “It’s fine if you don’t love me. I’ll be the one who sacrifices for you this time around. I’ll-“
He wanted to say, “I’ll love you”. He never told Liana he loved her, but he had an urge to use the word on
Alyssa.
“Enough. I do not need the love from a man I’m not interested in. How many times do I need to repeat myself?” To shut him up, she threatened, “I’ll turn around and leave if you keep spouting nonsense.”
That immediately silenced him. After a while, when Alyssa looked much more composed, he cautiously asked, “I won’t bring it up anymore. Will you stay the night?”
“Pfft. Dream on.”
“You said you’d grant me a promise if I save you, as long as it’s not something outrageous,” Jeremy persisted.
“Last night, you-” She recalled how Jeremy had kissed her in the same room yesterday.
He had pinned her by the waist and showered her with a long, passionate kiss. She blushed at the thought as heat rose in her body.
“Oh, are you talking about the kiss? That doesn’t count,” Jeremy said in a low voice as he grinned, pleasured by the sight of her embarrassment.
“That doesn’t count?” she raised her voice in shock. She finally realized how cunning Jeremy could be and that she should really stay away from him.
“Sure, I forced a kiss on you, but you counterattacked,” he said, pointing at the scab on his lip. “Here’s the evidence.”
“You deserved it! I’d tear your lips to pieces if I could, you pervert!” Her cheeks reddened in anger at the thought of his advance.
“Okay. Go ahead,” Jeremy invited her with a straight face, even leaning backward as a welcoming gesture.
She gritted her teeth. How she wished she could kick him off his bed to wipe that gleeful smile off his face!
She didn’t want to argue further with Jeremy, who had guilt-tripped her. Instead, she caved in and decided to stay the night.
Since she arrived at the hospital in a rush, she did not bring anything with her. She had to request Sean to bring her some pajamas and daily essentials from her Solana City villa.
Sean returned to the hospital soon with a somber expression. He walked down the corridor with a tiny suitcase in his hand.
“Sorry for the trouble, Sean. You should get home and rest now. Pick me up tomorrow morning,” Alyssa thanked Sean and was about to take the suitcase from him, but he refused to let go of it.
He implored her, “Ms. Alyssa, come home with me.”
“I know Jeremy has thrown out a sudden request, but it’s not a big deal to me. I don’t mind paying him back this way,” Alyssa explained calmly.
“But you’ll share a room with him! What if he’s up to no good and… and …”
“I was once married to him. If he really wanted to take advantage of me, he wouldn’t have waited until today.”
“But-“
Alyssa waved off Sean and reassured him, “Jeremy might be a jerk, but he understands the law. If he ever forces himself on me, I’ll castrate him.”
Right after Alyssa entered Jeremy’s room, Sean immediately got a call from Liam. He picked up. “Hi, Mr. Liam.”
