A moment later, she hung up and shook her head.
“What’s wrong, Mommy?” Robert looked up at her.
“No interview,” Victoria said flatly. “They don’t need me anymore.”
Robert frowned, feeling confused. “Huh…”
Before she could explain, more calls came in. All from companies she’d been interested in. One was even from a manager.
He said her designs had real style. He liked her work and wanted to talk about future projects.
But his company was too small for someone like her. He apologized and hinted she’d made a powerful enemy. He told her to try somewhere else. Design wasn’t an option for her now.
“I see. Thank you,” Victoria said, then ended the call.
Robert watched her. After all those rejections, the pattern was clear. Someone was blocking her.
“Looks like someone doesn’t want you to work, Mom!” Robert sighed. It had to be that arrogant man behind this. Who else could move so fast and get the word out to everyone immediately?
“Carter has too much time on his hands! So shameless!” Robert cursed.
Victoria shrugged. “I guess he’s bored. Instead of being with his new girlfriend, he’s bothering me.”
“Mom, why don’t you just hack his company and ruin him? Let him cry on the street!” Robert moved closer, tugging her sleeve, his face full of excitement.
Victoria’s eyes darkened when she heard that. “Robert!”
Robert stuck out his tongue and grinned. “Just kidding, Mommy! Look at me – I’m all sweet and innocent. Would I ever do something like that?”
Victoria’s expression turned serious. “The more Carter tries to block me, the more I’ll prove that I can live my best life without him!”
She opened her laptop and sorted through her emails again. She skipped the ones from companies linked to Myers Group – those were hopeless now. The rest were just small firms. They were too afraid to cross Carter. So they also wouldn’t invite her for interviews.
Carter was trying to corner her. Did he really think she’d come begging?
Not a chance.
Forget being a designer – even if she changed careers, Carter would probably find a way to ruin it. Who does he think he is? Being theCEO of Myers Group doesn’t make him king of the world!
Victoria ignored those options and searched for new companies.
Myers Group was a giant in Capaville. So were the Massey Group and Goetz Group – but their heirs were all friends with Carter. She had to avoid them too.
What did that leave?
She frowned. She could leave the city, but why should she? She wouldn’t run. She wanted to carve out her own path right here in Capaville.
Let Carter and Isabella do what they wanted. She refused to let them control her life.
If she wanted to stay in Capaville without Carter interfering, she needed a company even Myers Group couldn’t touch.
Then she saw it – Cosmos Group.
It wasn’t well-known locally yet, but globally, it was a legend.
It was one of the world’s top companies, with brands and chains all over the globe. It had built a business empire in record time.
Its owner, Eric Meader, had become the world’s richest man overnight six months ago.
Rumors said he was reclusive, living on a private island called Emerald Bay. He only appeared for major business.
Cosmos Group had opened a branch in Capaville just three months ago and was hiring talents.
It was a perfect opportunity for Victoria.
Carter had no influence there. In fact, Myers Group and Cosmos Group were direct competitors. With Cosmos Group developing in Capaville, Myers Group was probably busy trying to suck up to them!
Without hesitation, Victoria sent her resume to Cosmos Group.
Robert gave her a thumbs-up. “You’re awesome, Mommy!”
With that done, Victoria went out shopping for their new home. She bought what they needed and had it delivered. Robert stayed back to receive everything.
“Love you, Mommy!”
Hearing his voice warmed her heart. Having Robert by her side was all that mattered.
On her way back, Victoria stopped for a treat. Robert loved mousse cake, and there was a shop nearby. She waited in line and got the last slice of strawberry mousse – Robert’s favorite.
She stood by the curb, waiting to cross.
“Miss?” a small voice said. “Can I have that cake?”
Victoria looked down. A little girl, no more than five, looked up at her shyly.
“My grandpa and I came to buy strawberry cake for Grandma. But they said you got the last one.”
Victoria glanced toward the shop. An elderly man stood at the door, offering an apologetic smile.
She understood.
“Miss, I can pay. I saved this.” The girl held out a handful of coins – mostly nickels and dimes.
Victoria’s heart softened. The child had saved every bit of her pocket money for this.
Victoria smiled and bent down toward the little girl. “Sweetie, if you like this cake, I can – ” She froze midsentence, her face turning pale.
Her senses, always sharp, screamed danger.
A large truck was speeding straight toward them.
One look told her something was very wrong. This was a busy shopping street, full of people. No truck should be moving that fast here.
Honk!
The truck’s horn blared. The driver stuck his head out the window, yelling in panic, “The brakes are out!”
At his shout, the street erupted into chaos.
People began to scream.
The terrified driver flung his door open and jumped from the moving vehicle. He tumbled across the pavement, slamming hard into a metal fence before finally stopping.
But the truck kept going, veering wildly toward the sidewalk.
Victoria’s instincts told her to move. One quick, fluid step and she’d be safe. But the little girl beside her just stood there, looking up at her, completely unaware.
