“I have heard about you, to be honest. You are known for only representing the rich and have dealt with many celebrities and billionaires, remarked Newton with a snicker. “If you hadn’t mentioned you were
Spencer’s son, I couldn’t have associated you with him. You seemed… quite different from your father.”
Anyone could tell that Newton was being sarcastic. He was doubting Simon’s integrity.
Jeremy couldn’t hold back a grin while Javier and Sophia put on sour faces.
“Sir!” Ben hurried over and announced courteously, “Ms. Alyssa is here!”
Jeremy’s heart sank, and his eyes faltered. Everyone shot complicated glances at the door.
Alyssa’s high heels clicked sharply, echoing in Jeremy’s heart. She walked alone into the compound, her confident and regal air making it seem like her first visit despite her three years of living there.
Jeremy fell into a daze, feeling as though they were still married.
“Grandpa, I’m here!” Beaming, she approached Newton with bright eyes. She did not pause for a second as she brushed past Jeremy, treating him like a stranger.
He felt suffocated as his fingers curled into a fist. His heart skipped a beat and sank. After the divorce, every time he crossed paths with her was like torture.
“Alyssa …” Betty glowered at Alyssa, ready to lash out, only to be reined in by Sophia.
“Oh, isn’t this Simon? What a small world!” Alyssa paused when she passed Simon and grinned at him.
Simon looked startled, just like the others. Everyone wondered about the nature of their relationship, seeing how they were on a first-name basis.
“Ms. Alyssa. It’s been a while,” replied Simon with a forced smile as he addressed her politely.
“Right? You haven’t visited Dad for five years or so. He thought about you recently,” she remarked, “We’re old family friends. Uncle Spencer always brought you and Sean to visit us when I was a kid. But we grew distant over the years.”
Then, she turned her gaze onto Javier’s shocked face and stated, “Mr. Walsh, you probably had no idea about this, but Uncle Spencer and his three sons have always been very welcome at our home.
“After Uncle Spencer retired, he briefly served as the Director of Legal Affairs of KS Group, although not many people knew because he kept a low profile.”
Simon struggled to maintain his composure. His cheeks burned in shame. Alyssa sounded unbothered, but every single one of her remarks was aimed at him.
He was reluctant to reveal that his family was indebted to the Taylors. Deep down, he acknowledged that he owed much of his current success to their financial support.
He had to break free from the Taylors’ influence to build a name for himself and grow his career.
“I never knew that Mr. Lynch had a close connection to the Taylor Family,” mused Newton.
“Yes, my dad served as the legal counsel of KS Group for a few years, but it was all in the past. I have not been in touch with the Taylors for a long time,” Simon quickly added, anxious to distance himself from the Taylor family.
“Simon-My bad, Mr. Lynch.” Alyssa squinted, her smile fading. “I’m sure you haven’t forgotten the unfortunate incident that occurred when Uncle Spencer retired. Without my dad’s help, your family might not have survived that challenge.
“My dad was indebted to yours, and your family received help from ours as well. We never wanted you to repay us, but at the very least, you shouldn’t join forces with outsiders to give me trouble.”
She put on a cool, mocking grin. “Is burning bridges one of the principles an attorney swears by?”
Alyssa had effectively labeled Simon as an ingrate with her firm and strong statement.
If he wanted to distance himself from the Taylor family, she would air their dirty laundry in front of everyone.
With a fake smile on his face, he shot a chilling look at Alyssa. He couldn’t help but question Sean’s taste in women. She seemed insolent and argumentative. If Sean married her, she would only bring trouble to the Lynch Family.
The air turned awkward and tense. Javier viewed Alyssa as a troublemaker who seemed to bring chaos with her every appearance. While he acknowledged Simon’s capability, he felt uneasy upon learning about Simon’s connection to the Taylor Family.
“I didn’t know you had a hidden past with the Taylor family,” Jeremy chimed in, seemingly addressing Simon, but his eyes were on Alyssa. “So, does that make Ms. Alyssa the daughter of your benefactor? Is this how you repay her-by going against her?”
Alyssa furrowed her brows and sulked at Jeremy’s words.
Was he actually defending her in front of his family?
He had never sided with her when they were married. There was no need for the pretense. Newton’s frown deepened when he heard Jeremy’s words.
“Do you mean I couldn’t be an attorney just because we were indebted to the Taylors?” Simon would not have it. Faking a smile, he countered, “As a professional, I categorize people into two groups. They are either my clients or they are not.
“I will do my best for Ms. Betty because she’s my client. Is there anything wrong with that? If you hire me for a case, I’ll do my job just as diligently. This has nothing to do with gratitude.”
The gleeful look on Simon’s face triggered Jeremy, who clenched his fists.
“Oh, I wouldn’t dare hire you!” Alyssa waved her hands, seemingly shocked by the notion. She exclaimed, You’re an excellent attorney and a double-edged sword! Today, you might assist me, but tomorrow, you could be on the opposing side, helping others win against me!”
As if that wasn’t enough, she lightly poked her cheeks and added, “You didn’t even show mercy to my dad, who is your benefactor. I must mean nothing to you. If you climb the ranks and end up working against me someday, you’ll undoubtedly crush me. I don’t have the means to hire and satisfy a big shot like you.”
Even Alyssa was disgusted by the performance she had put up. She could rival Liana Gardner when it came to acting mean and petty.
Jeremy couldnt hide his amusement, seeing the innocence on Alyssa’s face, which concealed her slyness.
Simon coughed, feeling uneasy in his chest.
Betty had wanted to openly taunt Alyssa, given that she was at home and in Simon’s presence. Even if she couldn’t physically hurt Alyssa, she hoped to at least make herself feel better.
After Alyssa’s verbal attacks, Betty hid behind Sophia cowardly without any thoughts of causing trouble, seeing that Simon had been defeated.
Alyssa went over to Newton and clasped his bony hand with worry, looking closer to him than Betty ever did. “Grandpa! Why did you call me over at this hour? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Don’t worry, child. I’m fine.” Newton looked into her bright eyes tenderly and patted the back of her hand. He reassured her, “I’m perfectly fine. In the best of health.”
She let out a long sigh. “That’s good to hear.”
“Allison, it isn’t anything serious. I wanted you here because, firstly, I missed you, and secondly, I wanted to understand. What happened between you and Betty? Why did things escalate?” He sounded sincere.
He added, “You and Betty are both dear to me, and I wish to see the two of you doing well. I get nervous and concerned every time the both of you cause a stir.”
Despite his choice of words, Alyssa could tell he wanted to speak up for Betty. She felt a lump in her throat. It seemed that no matter how kindly she treated him, she would never be treated the same as his granddaughter.
He’d still have a soft spot for his precious granddaughter, even if she was, in reality, a deceitful backstabber.
“Dad, Betty nearly didn’t make it out of the police station alive during those two days!”
Seizing the opportunity, Sophia embraced Betty tightly.
She sobbed together with her daughter and lamented, “The police took turns interrogating her in 24 hours, threatening her and scolding her. They didn’t even allow her to sleep. Look at this poor girl! She’s utterly drained from that torture!”
Indeed, Betty appeared more exhausted than before, and her tears added to her miserable look.
Newton had doted on Betty since she was a child. She might not be as talented as Alyssa, nor did she please him the way Alyssa had. Besides, Betty rarely visited him after gaining her independence in adulthood.
Despite all that, Betty was his granddaughter. At his age, he only wanted to enjoy family time.
Jeremy felt a pang of unease when he noticed the tears in Alyssa’s eyes, seeing her confidence waver. It was clear she felt hurt by what Newton had said to her.
It reminded him of how she had been treated as an outsider during their three years of marriage. Not only did he not feel bad for her, he secretly wished that she’d give up and suggest a divorce.
The look on Alyssa was a reenactment of her life in the past. Jeremy couldn’t afford to mistreat her any longer.
With that in mind, he went up to Newton with rage in his eyes. To everyone’s shock, he casually wrapped an arm around her shoulders and drew her closer, making her appear like his woman. They looked like they had never been divorced.
She glared at him, freezing in place. “Jeremy-“
Refusing to let her go, he tightened his grip on her rounded shoulder. “Grandpa, instead of asking her what happened, you should ask about what Betty had done.”
Alyssa felt the warmth from Jeremy’s hand against her skin.
She kept her complaints to herself, deeming Jeremy a “crazy piece of garbage.” She couldn’t fathom his actions and wished he would withdraw his dirty hands.
Sensing her urge to free herself, he gripped her tighter, almost crushing her body. Everyone was surprised by the intimate display between the ex-couple.
Only Newton looked pleasantly surprised and glad, his earlier moodiness giving way to joy.
Was Allison back together with Jeremy? She looked reluctant, though.
He didn’t care how Jeremy went around it. He was just glad that Jeremy finally got it straight. The progress in his romantic relationship was worth celebrating.
Alyssa couldn’t stand Jeremy’s advances anymore. When no one was looking, she slowly raised her foot and stomped on his toes with her high heels.
