Upon seeing Venessa arrive, she finally settled down slightly.
“My darling Vena, why couldn’t I reach you on your phone? I was absolutely frantic at being unable to reach you. I heard you’ve been working at a bar. With your health condition, how could you possibly take on such strenuous work in a place like that?”
Venessa hurried over to soothe her. “I’m not going to work. I’ll be with you here in the hospital tonight.”
“That’s good, that’s good. I’ll be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days. After that, you can come live with me at Pierce Manor.”
“All right, Grandma, from now on, I’ll stay with you in Pierce Manor.”
Like a child, Venessa playfully threw herself into Vera’s embrace and snuggled up to her.
Only when she was with Vera could she truly be herself.
Cole’s dark eyes were fixed intently on Venessa.
It was as if time had rewound back to four years ago.
Venessa once used to affectionately cling to him in the same way.
Heaven knew how much he missed her from those days…
He had insisted on coming up with her, all so he could steal a few more glances at this side of her.
“Oh, Cole is here too? Please, have a seat. You’re such a devoted young man, always coming to visit this old lady. I feel at ease with you as my grandson-in-law.”
Vera looked at Cole, her face breaking into a kind smile.
“Hello, Old Mrs. Pierce,” Cole greeted politely.
“How odd. Why didn’t you come with Madison, but instead, you came with Vena?”
This awkward question prompted a bitter smile from Cole.
“I ran into Venessa on the road, so I brought her up here.”
“Was it really just a coincidence?” Vera’s expression turned peculiar. “I saw it earlier. There was a sparkle in your eyes when you looked at Vena. That’s not a good sign, you know. Be honest with me, do you still have feelings for Vena?”
Just as Cole was about to respond, Venessa beat him to it.
“Grandma, Cole never had any feelings for me. Where is this supposed affection coming from?”
Vera nodded, her expression filled with profound meaning as she said, “That makes sense. In the past, you were always revolving around Cole, but he didn’t even spare you a glance. I must have been overthinking.”
Once she finished speaking, she gently stroked Venessa’s head, expressing her affection with a tender voice. “I will definitely find you a better man, one superior to this brat.”
Immediately, Cole froze.
Venessa nodded with a smile, exclaiming in agreement. However, once she turned around, her expression hardened as she kicked Cole out.
“Mr. Lockwood, if there’s nothing else, you may leave now. Otherwise, not only would Grandma misunderstand us, but if the Pierce family were to come, they too would get the wrong idea about us.”
Reluctantly, Cole had to leave. As he stepped out of the room, he couldn’t help but cast a longing glance back at Venessa.
He yearned to become a part of her world, but she was desperately trying to escape from his.
It’s okay. As long as she attends my birthday party, that means she still hasn’t completely given up on our past relationship. In that case, there’s definitely a way for us to mend our strained relationship!
Two days later.
The Lockwood family had thrown a grand birthday party for Cole.
As one of the four great families within Jexburgh, the Lockwood family held a position of significant influence.
Nearly all of the high society from Jexburgh had gathered, each of them extending their birthday wishes to Cole.
Cole was busy attending to the guests. It wasn’t until the Pierce family arrived that he began to look around. He glanced left and right, but he couldn’t spot any sign of Venessa.
Dressed in a luxurious gown, Madison produced a beautifully wrapped gift, her body almost pressing against his.
“Happy birthday, Caz,” she said. “I specifically sought out a foreign designer to craft this birthday gift for you. I really hope you like it.”
Cole accepted the gift, but his reaction wasn’t one of surprise. Instead, he furrowed his brows and asked, “Where’s Venessa?”
As soon as these words were spoken, Madison’s expression drastically changed.
Jealousy marred her beautifully made-up face, twisting it beyond recognition.
Gabe knew what Cole was up to. His gaze hardened as he said tersely, “She’s at the hospital with Grandma and can’t come.”
“But she promised me!” Cole insisted, his voice tinged with anger. “Call her!”
Alaric and Harriet’s expressions turned serious.
Cole was Madison’s fiancé, yet he was insisting that Venessa attend his birthday party. Just how ridiculous was that?
As Alaric and Harriet looked toward Madison, they saw that her eyes had instantly reddened, and she was on the verge of tears.
The older couple simultaneously found themselves blaming Venessa in their hearts.
As an older sister, how could she compete with her younger sister for a man?
Nonetheless, they quickly lowered their voices to comfort Madison.
Gabe pulled Cole aside, gripping his collar tightly as he reprimanded him, “Did you say that in front of Madison just to make sure everyone knows you’re interested in Venessa?”
Cole’s eyes were fixated on Gabe, his haughty demeanor seemingly towering over the latter.
“In an era of freedom in marriage, surely you’re not thinking of arranging it yourself? Let go of me! Don’t think just because you’re my good friend that I’ll put up with you indefinitely!”
“Cole, please, man up! Juggling two women will eventually be your downfall!”
“Then that’s my business. You shouldn’t interfere!”
Tension crackled between them like a lit fuse. It seemed a fight was imminent.
Suddenly, the melodious voice of Lilith, the lead singer of Moonhaze Band, rang out from the stage.
“Next, I will perform my signature song, ‘Angel’, for everyone.”
