“You – !” Marshall’s fury flared. “Tell me – did you go partying at the Eastgate Lounge bar tonight with a bunch of shady people?”

“I did not.”

“You’re still lying? Dani saw you there herself!” Helen shot up from the couch the moment she heard Abigail deny it.

Abigail’s gaze slid coldly to Daniella. So that’s who locked the balcony door earlier.

“Oh?” Abigail turned to her. “You saw me, huh? Where exactly did you see me?”

“I… I was…” Daniella’s words faltered. If she admitted she saw Abigail inside the bar, that would mean she had been inside too. “I was outside, at the entrance to Eastgate Lounge.”

Abigail let out a short laugh. “Eastgate Lounge is huge. And that means I went to the bar because… what? You felt it in your gut?”

Her eyes gleamed as she mimicked Daniella’s usual coy tone. “Are you saying the Besnard family and the Clark family are the ‘shady people’?”

“What?” Marshall’s expression shifted immediately. “The Besnard family and the Clark family?”

Both were long-established aristocratic houses in Stonebridge. Not quite on par with the Hawthornes – but far above the Gibson’ side branch. Definitely not families they could afford to offend.

Daniella’s heart sank. This was bad. In the past, Abigail would’ve flown into a rage the moment her parents didn’t believe her. She never got this far into a confrontation. But now? Abigail had changed. And she was harder to handle than ever.

Abigail met her sister’s eyes and enunciated clearly, “Jill and Cameron were with me tonight. Don’t tell me you didn’t see them. Or are they the ones you’re calling ‘shady’?”

Marshall instantly turned to Daniella, voice sharp. “Is that true?”

Daniella froze. She hadn’t expected it to come to this. She was used to Abigail storming off long before it got this far. Caught off guard, under Marshall’s withering glare, she could only stammer, “I… I didn’t get a good look…”

That was all Marshall needed to hear. As much as he spoiled Daniella, that only went as far as the Gibson family’s interests weren’t at risk.

“You didn’t see clearly, and yet you come here slandering your sister?” he barked. “You’re grounded until the semester starts. Reflect in your room.”

“I…” Under his furious gaze, Daniella didn’t dare talk back. “Yes, sir.”

Abigail watched her clenched fists at her sides, her nails probably digging bloody crescents into her palms by now.

Turning back to Abigail, Marshall’s tone softened for the first time that evening. “Abigail, you’re a daughter of the Gibson family. And if the Gibson family thrives, so will your future. You should work on building stronger ties with Jill and Cameron, understand?”

Sickening. Abigail sneered inwardly. Of course Marshall would turn on a dime. With his opportunistic nature, he wouldn’t dare waste a chance to latch onto elite families like theirs.

“I’m tired.” Abigail tossed the words out and walked off without another glance.

Back in her room, she pulled out her phone and made a call. “Lena, go to the Gibson family’s main house tomorrow.”

The next morning, Lena arrived bearing a custom-made dress as a gift – and met with the lady of the Gibson family’s main household.

Afterward, Marshall once again sought out the Gibson family patriarch, hoping to gain his support in weathering the crisis. But unlike before, the old man’s stance had shifted – he was now vague and noncommittal.

Marshall couldn’t make sense of it. The man had already agreed in principle before – what had changed so suddenly?

But that would have to wait.

That very night, a bombshell shook the entertainment world. A notorious gossip account known as “Detective Kongkong” dropped a cryptic post on Twitter, claiming to have explosive dirt on a top celebrity. The teaser mentioned that the celebrity had once been involved in a serious scandal: a car crash on a quiet late-night street. According to the post, the star had pulled strings to pin the blame on someone else – then fled overseas to dodge the fallout, trying to bury the incident for good.

Most notably, the leaker specified that the celebrity’s surname started with the letter “R” – but nothing more.

The internet went into a frenzy. Within hours, the topic skyrocketed to the top of Twitter’s trending list.

Curiosity exploded as netizens scoured the entertainment scene for every big name with an “R” surname. From trending idol singers to award-winning actors, no one was spared. Everyone who fit the profile got dragged into the public spotlight.

Yet “Detective Kongkong” seemed to enjoy keeping everyone in suspense. No matter how the media prodded or fans pleaded, he refused to share further details. Instead, he kept posting vague, tantalizing hints – stoking the fire, feeding the frenzy, and letting the speculation spiral out of control.

Abigail skimmed a few of the headlines the next morning and then tossed her phone aside, uninterested.

The atmosphere at the Gibson family breakfast table was noticeably tense.

Daniella, still sullen from last night’s scolding, sat listlessly at her seat.

Boone, meanwhile, looked completely distracted. Helen had to call his name multiple times before he even noticed.

“Boone, what’s going on with you?” Helen frowned. “I’ve been calling you over and over.”

Boone snapped out of it with a delay. “Sorry. I didn’t sleep well last night.”

Helen’s eyes filled with worry. “You shouldn’t stay up so late reading scripts. You need rest.”

“Yeah, I know.” Boone mumbled, clearly not paying attention.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Glancing at the message on WhatsApp, Boone shot up from his seat. “Mom, Dad – I need to step out for a bit.”

“At least finish breakfast – ” Helen hadn’t even finished speaking before he was gone.

Abigail watched him leave, the corner of her lips curling into a knowing smirk.

Boone rushed to the meeting point where his manager was already waiting. The moment he arrived, his pent-up frustration exploded.

“You told me everything was taken care of! What the hell was that leak last night?”

The manager looked just as anxious. He rushed to reassure him. “Boone, I swear everything’s under control. The fall guy already took the blame and got sentenced. He insists he was the one behind the wheel. There were no witnesses – besides, the other driver died on the spot. I’m telling you, that leak has nothing to do with you.”

Boone frowned, pacing in agitation, anxiety gnawing at his gut.

Seeing his concern, the manager doubled down on his pitch. “People are only dragging your name into it because your surname starts with an R. That’s it. I already hired a PR team to drown it out. They confirmed you were out of the country at the time. You’re in the clear.”

Boone stared at him, voice low. “You’re absolutely sure there’s no loose ends?”

The manager patted his chest confidently. “Positive. Trust me, it’ll blow over. There are plenty of other R-named celebrities. The public’s just guessing in the dark.”

Boone finally let out a long breath, the tension in his chest easing. “Let’s hope it really blows over. Keep an eye on everything for me – any hint of trouble, I want to know immediately.”

The manager nodded like a bobblehead. “Absolutely. You can rest easy. I won’t miss a thing.”

But what Boone didn’t know was that this was only the beginning.

Back in her room, Abigail picked up her phone and dialed a number. “Stick to the plan. Keep leaking it – slowly.”

Nothing hurts like death by a thousand cuts.
