As soon as his back was to me, I rolled my eyes just to get it out of my system.
He made himself right at home by opening the fridge and placing the bowl of fruit in there. “Mike told me that grapes will taste even better if they’re chilled.”
I bit my tongue so I wouldn’t say what I was thinking. That nothing could make those grapes taste better.
For a moment, we just stared at each other, my kitchen island separating us. An image of the last time that we were alone popped into my head. My skin heated, and my legs trembled as I pictured Alexander’s mouth on mine and his warm hands sliding down my body, making me moan and beg for more.
I swallowed thickly as my eyes scanned his body. I couldn’t help but picture Alexander with that white towel wrapped around his waist. Who knew that a man’s arms could be so sexy?
I shook my head and scolded myself for the direction my thoughts had taken. What was it about Alexander that made me forget why it was a bad idea for us to be together?
“Would you, um, like a glass of water?” I asked him just to fill the loaded silence.
“Only if you have some mint to add in there.”
I laughed because I thought that he couldn’t be serious. But when his face remained expressionless, I realized that he wasn’t joking.
Before I could mutter something about rich people and the weird way that they took their water, I reminded myself that I was trying to turn over a new leaf with him.
“I’ll see what I can do,” I said.
Five minutes later, I set two ice-cold glasses of water on the counter. A slice of lemon was floating on the top of our drinks. “I didn’t have any mint. I hope lemon will suffice.” I tried to keep the sarcasm out of my voice.
I wasn’t sure how successful I was because Alexander was smiling as he picked up the wedge of lemon and squeezed it into his water. He probably only asked me for a mint just to mess with me.
After he stirred his drink around, he just set it back down on the counter. Since he didn’t drink it, I eyed him and crossed my arms. “Would you prefer a cup of tea instead?”
“No, this is great.” He gestured for me to sit down.
I was a little annoyed at being asked to sit down in my own house, but I reminded myself that I was trying to keep the newfound peace between us.
We went to the living room, and my stomach stiffened when I realized that the only piece of furniture I had in the living room was my small couch. Once we were seated, my hands started to shake at the fact that our thighs were pressed together. But there was nowhere else for us to sit. I cleared my throat and sipped my water just for something to do.
“So, why did Mike start growing sour grapes?” I asked, trying to break the tension that had fallen over the room.
Alexander shrugged and sipped his water. “I think just to help with facial paralysis, but you’d have to ask him.”
Then, I changed the topic to how the weather in Luceland compared to the weather in New York. Alexander allowed me to chatter on, only occasionally adding to my running commentary.
Thankfully, on the outside, I seemed pretty calm and relaxed, but inside my mind was going a million miles a second, wondering when Alexander would leave.
In the middle of my monologue about how I was going to fold my laundry, Alexander put his hand on my leg. My words caught in my throat as he leaned toward me. His warm hand gently squeezed my bare skin. He looked right into my eyes and whispered one word under his breath.
“Oli…”
My nickname on his lips made my whole body tremble.
*Olivia*
“Oli,” he repeated in an even softer voice this time.
The nickname and his nearness made a shiver run down my spine. Even though he was only touching my thigh, it felt like he had run a hand slowly down my back. Why did the one man that I couldn’t have make me feel like this? It wasn’t fair.
His gaze fell down to my lap, and he eyed the empty water glass in my hands.
“If you’re still thirsty, you can have some of my water,” he murmured and handed me his glass that was half full.
I stopped breathing. The only sound in the room was the ice cubes in the glass gently clinking against the side of the cup. When our fingers grazed as I accepted the cool drink, my stomach swooped.
With my eyes still on his, I lifted the glass to my lips and took a slow sip from his cup. The intimacy of sharing a drink wasn’t lost on me. His mouth had just been on the same spot as mine. That thought made my hand tremble, and the ice clinked against the glass even more.
I drained the rest of the water in the glass in one swallow. After I lowered the cup, Alexander tilted his head slightly, and he leaned toward me.
My heart jolted as his face got closer to mine. Even though my body was begging for me to kiss him, my rational mind was louder.
I jumped up from the couch. “I’m going to get more water,” I said and grabbed both of the empty glasses, and ran into the kitchen.
When I opened the fridge, I didn’t immediately grab the water pitcher. I just used the cool air flowing out so that I could clear my head.
But just when my heart slowed down and I allowed my eyes to flutter close, I felt a warm presence behind me that was sucking all the cold air out of the room.
Alexander.
His body pressed against me, and I had to grab onto the shelf of the fridge so I wouldn’t do something embarrassing like faint because of the heat coming off of his body. Slowly, he tucked my hair behind my ear. I couldn’t help the small gasp that escaped my lips. I froze when I felt his mouth right against my ear.
“Do you need any help, Oli?”
I bit my lip. There was that nickname again. Why did it make me putty in his hands? His woodsy scent enveloped me like a warm embrace. I couldn’t think straight. Half of me wanted to lean against his muscular body, and the other half wanted to make an excuse and step out of his warmth.
I wasn’t sure which part of myself to listen to.
Because the fridge had been open too long, it started to beep to remind me to close it. But Alexander and I stood still, waiting to see what the other would do. The longer that his body was pressed against mine, the deeper I blushed, and the more my heart raced.
Alexander gently stroked the tip of his finger down my checks. Making me gasp loudly. The contrast of the cool air blasting on my hot face and his warm body pressed against mine was too much for me to handle.
“Are you alright?” he whispered into my ear. I could tell that he was trying his best not to laugh.
His question made my resolve break. I whipped my head around, hooked my arm around his neck, pulled him flush against my body, and sank my teeth into his neck. I even managed to close the fridge door.
My bite wasn’t meant to be playful or sexy.
It was a warning.
After I was done, I didn’t even run my tongue over the spot to lessen the sting of my bite.
When I pulled away from him, I put my finger in his face. “Restrain yourself,” I warned and narrowed my eyes at him.
Then, I grabbed his hand and pulled him out of my kitchen.
There was a bemused grin on his face, and he rubbed his neck as he let me pull him along.
“Jokes on you,” he murmured. “Because I liked that bite.’
“1
My stomach jolted, but I ignored the part of my body that was begging me to wrap my arms around him again.
“…I need to go to the bathroom,” I said and dropped his hand
Then. I rushed out of the room before he could say anything more
When I got back into the bathroom, my eyes widened when I realized that I hadn’t shut off the shower all the way. The room was full of hot steam, and the mirror was completely fogged up. Quickly. I shut it off and cracked open the door to get all the steam out of the room I took my time and washed my face. My time with Alexander had left my skin raw. It was like all of my nerve endings were exposed.
