“Because you had been using Ava’s legs as a pillow for so long, her legs were starting to fall asleep,” Alexander explained. “So when we stopped for dinner, I kindly offered to take her place. We made the switch very quickly so we wouldn’t wake you up.”
“Well, how come Richard switched with Aiden?” I asked.
Alexander scoffed. “As if I would trust that boy to drive me anywhere.” A smile played on the corners of my lips.
Then, I glanced down at Alexander’s lap-the place where I had been lying just a moment ago-and my legs trembled when I saw the noticeable bulge in Alexander’s pants. My mouth dried as I continued to look. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from his hard length.
He was huge.
Finally, I managed to look up and meet Alexander’s eyes. He was smirking, as if he knew exactly what I had been staring at. He wasn’t at all embarrassed. Honestly, he had no reason to be. His hard length was impressive.
But this whole situation made me blush and look away from him.
When I felt his warm hand on mine, I bit my lip.
“I’m sure you’re wondering why we kidnapped you?” he said with humor in his tone.
I shot him a glare. “Yes. Yes, I am.”
Alexander kept his hand on mine, and his thumb traced soothing patterns on my palm. It made me just a little less annoyed with him. But only a little.
Then, Alexander’s fuce grew serious, and he held my hand in his warm grasp. “Did we scare you when you woke up? That wasn’t my intention. I was really just trying to help out.”
“No,” I said, even though I had been scared. The soft expression in his eyes disarmed me in a way I didn’t understand. “I wasn’t scared. Did your legs fall asleep under the pressure of my big head like Ava’s?” I joked.
“No, it was…nice,” he admitted in a low voice. “Being your personal pillow, that is.”
He stared into my eyes, and my heart accelerated when he squeezed my hand.
After that, we were quiet for the rest of the car ride. I gazed out the window as we drove through the dark city. The twinkling lights were mesmerizing, but they didn’t hold a candle to the feeling of Alexander’s warm hand in mine.
I could feel his gaze on me, but I was too afraid of what would happen if I met his eyes. This night and Alexander’s presence felt too much like a dream. With a small smile on my face, I leaned over and pinched his upper arm.
“Ow,” Alexander muttered and rubbed his arm. “What was that for?”
I giggled. “Just making sure I’m not dreaming.”
“Here, let me help you out then.” He reached over and pinched me lightly. The spot stung, but I couldn’t help but laugh.
We were stopped at a light, and Richard looked back at us. “Hey, you two, hands where I can see them back there!” he teased.
“Olivia is the one who can’t keep her hands off of me,” Alexander protested and chuckled under his breath. “I should figure out a payment system for what you owe me for how handsy you’ve gotten.”
His voice still held humor, but there was an undercurrent behind his words. They reminded me of how I had misinterpreted him asking me for money last night after we made out. That made me spiral in shame, and I let go of Alexander’s hand and inched away from him. Exhaustion flowed through my body, and I leaned my forehead against the cool window and allowed my eyes to flutter close.
Once we got to my apartment building, Alexander instructed Richard to drop us off at the front and then park the car in the parking garage across the street. Had he done this to get me alone?
When we were in the elevator, Alexander put his hand lightly on the small of my back, making my stomach flip. “Since you didn’t have dinner, would you like to eat at my apartment?” he asked. “Mike is preparing a delicious dinner of pot roast, seafood congee, and your favorite abalone.”
My stomach growled, and I was about to accept his invitation, but something crossed my mind as soon as I opened my mouth. Alexander inviting me for dinner was how we ended up making out in a public park last night. Was it wise to accept his invitation?
“No, thank you,” I finally answered when the elevator dinged and opened. “I’m exhausted, and I have laundry to do before tomorrow.
A look of disappointment crossed Alexander’s face, but I told him goodnight, grabbed my bag, and exited the elevator. A large part of me was screaming at me to go back to his side, but I forced myself to keep walking.
When I entered my apartment, a lonely feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. Guilt for turning down Alexander joined the feeling until my stomach was bubbling with shame. My apartment felt cold and dark even when I flipped all the lights on. When I set my bag down on the floor, I realized that I hadn’t thanked Alexander for all the help he gave Ava and me in Luceland. Without him, we would probably still be in jail right now, and Chloe and her mother wouldn’t be where they belonged-behind bars.
But after everything we’d been through this weekend-all the passionate kisses we shared and the sharp words we exchanged-how was I ever going to face him again?
*Olivia*
It was true that I needed to do laundry-I hadn’t been lying to Alexander about that-but I just didn’t have the energy to do it. For five minutes, I stared at my fridge, going back and forth with myself, wondering whether I had made the right decision to decline Alexander’s invitation.
My spiraling was interrupted when my phone vibrated with a text, making it move slightly on my marbled kitchen counter. When I picked up the phone, my stomach jolted, thinking that the message was from Alexander.
But my heart lowered when I saw that it was from Mike. It was a picture of the dining room table loaded with my favorite foods. He sent a message along with it saying that he had made so much food and he would be delighted if I joined them.
His message didn’t help with my indecision. How rude would it seem if I declined both Alexander and Mike’s invitation for dinner? They might never invite me again. Before I could think of a response, Mike sent me a voice note. I pressed play, wondering if this was going to be another plea for me to come to dinner.
“Hey, Olivia,” Mike’s voice floated through the speakers in my phone. “I know that you’re probably exhausted after your trip. So, I was thinking, why don’t I just pack up some food and bring it to you so you could eat it in the comfort of your own home.”
This made tears form in my eyes. How thoughtful of him. I might be overly emotional because of the crazy weekend I had and the long car ride, but I knew in my heart that the right thing to do was go up there and eat the meal that Mike had probably spent all day cooking. I was going to have to face Alexander at work anyway.
I sent a quick message to Mike to tell him that I was headed up. First, I picked out a nice bottle of red wine from my collection and tied a big white bow around it. That way, I wouldn’t show up empty-handed. Then, I left my apartment. In the elevator, I reminded myself to take this opportunity to thank Alexander in person for all the help he gave Ava and me this weekend. And I could try to smooth things over after the awkwardness in the park last night. If I were the one to bring up the conversation, then I could have more control over how it went.
At the door to Alexander’s apartment, Mike let me in and told me that Alexander was in the shower.
My pulse quickened as I sat at the dining room table, thinking about Alexander in the warm steamy shower. I set the wine in front of me, my stomach grumbling from the mouth-watering scents enveloping me.
When I looked up, the bathroom door opened, and in a cloud of steam, Alexander walked out, naked from the waist up, a fluffy white towel wrapped around his waist. My mouth became dry as I studied the water droplets running down his hard, muscular stomach. A weird urge to kiss my way down his body went through me, and I gripped the bottle of wine in front of me so I wouldn’t do anything rash.
“H-hi,” I said, my cheeks blushing because I stuttered. “I changed my mind about dinner.” I gestured to the bottle of wine. “I wanted to bring this as a small token of my appreciation for all of your help this weekend. Ava and I couldn’t have succeeded without it
To my shock, Alexander frowned, eyed the wine like it had insulted him, and then walked to his bedroom without a word.
Confusion swirled through me like a tornado, destroying everything in its path. I looked to Mike for help interpreting Alexander’s mood swings.
He merely shrugged.
A few moments later, Alexander came out of his bedroom with wet hair, dressed in gray sweatpants and a black shirt. His dark eyes locked on to mine, and his somber expression made my stomach stiffen. What the hell had I done that has pissed him off so much?
“Let’s eat before it gets cold,” Mike said, gesturing for Alexander to sit down.
I picked up my silverware, but Alexander didn’t even sit down. He was still standing and staring at me. He looked like an angry statue of a Greek god.
What was up with him? What had I done wrong? I thought that he would appreciate my show of gratitude with a small gift. Was a bottle of wine not enough thanks? Had he expected something more?
After a few minutes of awkwardness where Mike and I tried to exchange small talk-but it was hard to hold a conversation when Alexander was just standing there, staring at us-Alexander finally sat down. But he didn’t participate in the conversation, even when Mike and I tried our best to include him. I barely even tasted my meal because I was too busy wondering why Alexander was so upset. He was the one who had invited me to this dinner.
We finished the meal, and I helped Mike clear the table.
“Olivia?” Alexander said when Mike started to load the dishes into the washer.
I spun around, thinking that I was hearing things because Alexander hadn’t spoken all throughout dinner. But he was staring at me with expectation.
“Yes?” I asked and swallowed past the lump in my throat.
