The sound of the resounding slap echoed through the air.
The slap left Mindy stunned. She covered her red, swollen face, unable to believe what just happened. “How dare you hit me?”
There was no way Venessa would allow Mindy to spew lies and fabricate evidence as she had done four years ago. “If I want to hit you, do I really need to pick a specific day?”
With that, Venessa slapped her again.
Caught completely off guard, Mindy was struck so hard that her head turned to the side, leaving a ringing in her ears.
Venessa’s gaze was sharp as she said through gritted teeth, “The first slap was for falsely accusing me of being a thief four years ago, setting me up and causing me to be wrongfully imprisoned. This second slap is for your absurd accusation that I pushed Madison down the stairs!”
After speaking, she glared at Madison, growling in displeasure, “I don’t care if it was your best friend acting on her own to set me up, or if you were the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. I’m warning you, since I managed to escape death once, I won’t let you bully and frame me anymore! Let’s make sure what happened today doesn’t repeat in the future, or the slap meant for your best friend will land on your face!”
The warning left Madison speechless.
She clutched the hem of her skirt, her face drained of color. Whether it was fear or guilt, she didn’t even have the courage to meet Venessa’s gaze.
Mindy, who was dazed from the blow, recovered her senses and shouted, “You hit me! I’m calling the police. I’m going to call the police!”
The commotion attracted quite a crowd.
From amidst the crowd, a towering figure pushed through, radiating an aura of authority and power.
It was Gabe.
“Venessa, you even hit someone?” His voice was icy cold.
Upon seeing her savior arrive, Madison, who had been in a daze, suddenly burst into tears, the very picture of distress and injustice.
“Madison, don’t worry, I’m here to rescue you!”
Gabe immediately pulled Madison into his embrace, gently soothing her by patting her back.
With his piercing black eyes, he glared at Venessa as if he could bore a hole in her face with his intense gaze.
Mindy, covering her swollen face, played the victim first. “Gabe, you saw the video I sent you just now, didn’t you? Venessa had been persistently blaming Wavy in the private room. She held a grudge against Wavy, which led her to push Wavy down the stairs! This wicked woman nearly killed Wavy, and that wasn’t all, she even had the audacity to hit me! Just look at what she’s done to my face!”
Madison was sobbing so hard that she couldn’t catch her breath, tears streaming down her face.
“I don’t blame Venessa for pushing me, but…” she stammered. “But she shouldn’t have hit anyone! Mindy is my best friend, and hitting her felt like hitting me. It’s so heartbreaking!”
Her pitiful crying, coupled with her words, painted Venessa as the guilty party.
Venessa looked at the group with a cool gaze.
In stark contrast to the frantic accusations from Mindy and Madison, she maintained an unsettling calmness.
Gabe’s expression turned somber as he questioned, “Is that true? Venessa, did you try to harm Wavy? I demand the truth from you!”
“Do you believe me if I say no? I know you won’t, so speaking a hundred truths holds no meaning,” Venessa responded. Her tone, a blend of nonchalance and cool composure, sent a chill down Gabe’s spine.
On the very first day of her release from prison, Venessa found herself reliving the nightmare from four years ago. Once again, she was wrongfully accused and set up by those around her.
Gabe’s inner rage turned into a deep bitterness. The words of reproach he intended to speak simply couldn’t make their way out.
Venessa’s injuries seemed far more severe than Madison and Mindy’s.
Her cheeks were bruised on both sides, and a fresh cut on her forehead indicated a recent injury.
In the past, her delicate nature would have caused her to fall into his arms, unable to hold back her tears.
He would definitely have had to comfort her for a long time before soothing her tears away.
But now, she remained silent, refusing to complain. She exuded an unyielding stubbornness, ready to die rather than submit.
Noticing that Gabe remained silent, Venessa turned to Madison. Her voice was tinged with anger as she said, “You’re still the same as you were four years ago, deliberately setting traps for me. Why? Isn’t my life miserable enough? Is it because I lived the good life in your stead for eighteen years that you target me relentlessly?”
Madison’s sobbing abruptly halted, and she stared blankly at her. “No, Venessa, I didn’t set you up…”
“Whether you did or not, I don’t care anymore. I won’t let you frame me as you did four years ago!” Venessa let out a sarcastic chuckle. She then turned her gaze to Gabe, her eyes gleaming with a hint of contempt for him. “Believe it or not, I’m only going to clarify this once. Your dear sister fell down the stairs, and it was me, quick on my feet, who acted as a human cushion to save her! If you don’t believe me, Mr. Pierce, the wound on my head serves as proof, and so does the surveillance above your head! Four years ago, you forced me into submission, but four years later, I won’t give you another chance to falsely accuse or hurt me!”
After she finished speaking, she turned around and left.
Her resolute figure was like a gust of wind, leaving without a trace of attachment.
Gabe watched as she limped away and disappeared around the corner of the staircase. It took him quite a while to regain his composure.
His heart felt as if it was being gradually torn apart by a sharp blade, filled with pain and fear.
He could distinctly feel that he was gradually losing the sister with whom he had shared his life for eighteen years.
I didn’t say I didn’t believe her, did I?
An inexplicable restlessness stirred within him.
Watching Madison sobbing pitifully only deepened his frustration. But he didn’t show it.
He asked with concern, “Are you okay? Did you get hurt from the fall? I’ll take you to the hospital.”
After the doctor’s examination, the only injury Madison had sustained was a cut on her finger from a shard of a broken wine bottle.
Despite this, falling down the stairs had left her quite shaken. Gabe insisted on having her stay in the hospital for observation.
Afterward, he went to the bar to retrieve the surveillance footage.
Coincidentally, the manager mentioned that the stairway surveillance was broken.
Of all the times it could have broken, why now?
Gabe couldn’t believe it. After a series of threats and temptations, the bar manager finally gave in.
Mindy had given him money, instructing him to erase the surveillance footage.
Gabe took the surveillance footage that the manager didn’t get to delete to Mindy and confronted her. “Why did you falsely accuse Venessa of pushing Madison down the stairs?”
Mindy nervously retorted, “I… I didn’t falsely accuse her. I just misjudged the situation. The lighting was dim at that time, and Venessa and Wavy were having a heated argument inside the private room. You saw the video too, didn’t you? It’s only natural that I misunderstood.”
Gabe, showing no mercy, exposed her lies. “If it was just a misunderstanding, why did you erase the surveillance footage? You’re clearly trying to frame Venessa! There’s video evidence that you twisted the facts to suit your narrative. You knew very well that Venessa was working there, yet you specifically requested her to serve in your private room. What were your intentions? Venessa is innocent in the entire matter. She even saved Madison. What were your intentions when you targeted her? Was this your own idea, or did Madison ask you to do it?”
