“Then everything will go on as usual. You arrange the night’s business and we’ll leave early tomorrow,” Callum calmly ordered, taking a sip of soup.
“Yes, Your Highness.” Alen bent down in a standard royal manner and winked at me in secret as she looked up.
I had the shame of being exposed by a friend. I feel my earlobes must be very red.
The next day, Bud and a few of the soldiers left, leaving Alen with the carriage, and Callum and I in it.
“Your Highness, why don’t we go with them?” I finally couldn’t stand the heavy air and decided to bring up a topic to avoid being suffocated by boredom.
“You want to know?” He pulled out a parchment book in the carriage, looking at it carelessly and asking me without looking up.
“If that’s all right.” I looked at his face.
“Before my father died, he ordered three capable ministers in the palace to form the council of elders, who were responsible for both my upbringing and the administration of the palace when I was a child. According to royal tradition, after I am married, I shall officially become a king and hold the throne of the palace.”
He paused, and his long eyelashes covered his eyes. “Now, they’ve been in charge of the throne for a long time. You know, the decision to cede power is very painful for them.”
I tried to understand his words. According to royal tradition, if the king and Queen died and the prince they left behind was too young, the palace would entrust several trusted elders with the task of raising him. When the Prince is old enough to carry the weight of the pack, the elder will return power to the prince, and the Prince will become the new king.
The transfer of power always leads to trouble. The royal family was no exception, I thought. But what makes the royal family so special is that they want the prince to get married first. I suddenly understood why he needed Luna, and perhaps that was the reason.
As I was thinking, he suddenly handed me a booklet, palm-sized, with a thick cover and gilt lettering, heavy in his hand.
“These are the royal etiquette and rules, as well as the current affairs and personnel of the palace. Before we arrive at the palace, you’d better remember them. I’ll check.”
“Yes, your highness,” I replied weakly.
He looked up, his narrow eyes giving me a silent pressure, and I realized I had said the wrong thing, so I quickly changed my words: “Yes, master.”
Since Bud took some of the men back to the palace to deliver the news, our return to the palace had been less urgent. Alen drove slowly in front of the carriage, while I and my master, Callum, read in the carriage. But the difference is that he is always enjoying the book, and I am the opposite. In order to understand that little book, I have been flipping through the dictionary to understand some unfamiliar words.
My father’s Pack is not known for being powerful, so not all werewolves are good at reading and writing in our pack. When I was a child, my mother gave me an elementary education, so I know some spelling and basic vocabulary. After my mother died, I lived under Nicole’s torment. My father did not find me a governess, and I gradually lost the opportunity to continue my education.
But the situation has changed now. I am dealing with the Royal Lycans, a group of well-educated people.
I sighed a few times, and a pair of long and strong hands took away my book.
“Tell me, as Alpha’s daughter, why are you so clumsy with such rudimentary literacy?” Callum arched an eyebrow and stared at me with disgruntled eyes.
I couldn’t raise my head under his stare and pursed my lips uneasily. How am I gonna tell him about my terrible childhood? I was a child abandoned by my father. When Alpha’s daughter is mentioned in the Red Moon Pack, it’s only Nicole that comes to everyone’s mind, not me.
“Sit over here, I’ll show you.” A deep word came into my ear.
I looked up in amazement and saw nothing but the calm eyes of Callum.
Strange, I thought. His Highness had always been a proud man, but now he was willing to teach me.
“You are the future Queen. I don’t want you to lose face in the palace. Those people are not easy to deal with.”
Callum took the book in my hand. The sunlight from the glass window shone on his handsome face, and his golden eyes sparkled with noble air.
I sat there in silence, thinking that my expression had been seen through by him again. He always seemed to be able to read my mind at a glance, but I couldn’t read his mind, which was a bad feeling.
“One of the royal rules: it is forbidden for members of the royal family to attack each other…”
A deep, sexy voice rang in my ears, like a cello playing in the moonlight. I looked at the book in his hand, and even though he was sitting on the soft cushion, he was serious and alert, as if he were ready for any unexpected challenge. I sat next to him, the faint scent of a special smell enveloping me in my breath. The smell reminded me of the first time I saw him. When he carried me away under the gaze of so many eyes at the party, the most impressive thing for me was his scent.
“Pa!” The book was closed.
“What are you thinking about?” Callum suddenly bent over me, his long eyelashes almost touching mine.
I shivered, my chin lifted by two fingers, and the embarrassment of being caught while I was distracted made my hair stand on end.
I blinked awkwardly. My ears began to redden. I smiled guiltily. “I think you have a lovely voice, master.”
It was the first time I had ever called him master so willingly and consciously, and my eyes began to wander from him, and he squinted at me like a wolf in the grass trying to figure out how to apprehend its prey perfectly.
I had known that His Highness had a strange attraction to me, and I should have stayed away from him, I thought to myself.
“Hyah! Hyah!” The carriage suddenly sped up.
“You better be…”
Callum began to speak, but before he could finish his words, the carriage swerved and stopped. I was out of control of my inertia and threw myself into his arms. Then I felt his face magnify before me.
A soft, moist feeling came from my lips, and our breath interlaced with a slight heat. I watched his pale golden eyes darken, his hands propped up in front of me, forming a single, cramped space in the wide carriage, and I seemed to be the only slave in that space.
We had an unexpected kiss.
My face flushed, blood rushed to my cheeks, and Callum’s slightly opened lips and teeth seemed to be stuck in mine. The veins in the back of his hand, which was propped up beside me, bulged as if he were holding back something.
My head was wrapped in the soft fur of the carriage, and Callum’s eyes were fixed on my burning face and ears. A flame flickered in his pupils. My head was already full of tension and embarrassment, and sweat was oozing out of my clenched palms.
“Your Highness? Are you all right? “
Alen’s voice came from outside, interrupting the awkward air between us. Callum backed away, fresh air rushed in, and our distance widened. My confused brain finally became a bit clear. I pushed Callum away, holding my hand, and sat back down in a panic.
The door of the carriage was opened, and Callum looked at me and turned to get out of the carriage. I heard their voices.
“What’s going on? ” Callum’s voice suggests exasperation.
“Your Highness, I don’t know why there’s a trap in front. According to the map, we’d been following the path to a deserted place. It’s strange. I suspect someone is waiting for us. And there are some strange smells in the air.
“Vampires,” Callum said calmly, using the words Alen had not spoken.
“There are not many of them,” Alen said, quickly thinking about the chances of winning the conflict.
“We can’t let them take advantage of us,” Callum turns and shouts at his soldiers, “Cast a shield around the carriage!”
After shouting orders, Callum turned to me.” Keep quiet. Whatever happens, do not come out!”
He slammed the door shut without waiting for my answer. A thunderous high-pitched giggle shook the ground. I clapped my hands to her ears.
Vampires? We werewolves haven’t heard of vampires in a long time.
I’ve known since I was a little girl that we werewolves used to fight vampires for space a long time ago. Unlike our other enemies, like humans, our war with vampires is much more bitter. The vampire royal family has created an army of powerful dragon riders and church officials who use silver and holy water to target us. Over centuries, after countless bloody sacrifices in the struggle, werewolves occupied the forest, the vampires built a city-state. Werewolves and vampires secretly made a non-aggression pact.
Thud, thud.
With every giggle, the carriage shook.
I huddled in a corner of the carriage, biting my finger to make no noise. Why would a vampire attack a royal family? What do they want? Before I knew it, the sound of fighting outside made me tremble again.
“Stop them!”
