The Taylor family members were floored.
“Lyse! In that case, is he Damien?” Winston queried urgently.
Alyssa gritted her teeth and remained silent. She wondered why Remy would have appeared at the hospital at a time like this.
There could only be one possibility-he was the one who rammed into her car that night. He was also the one who sent her to the hospital. Yet, the first person she saw when she regained consciousness was Justin.
Jameson, Remy, Justin…
Suddenly, she came to a realization. Terror spread throughout her entire body.
A seemingly unrelated yet extremely horrifying thought popped into her mind. She didn’t believe in coincidences. All coincidences were inextricably linked with one another, albeit in secret.
“Lyse, say something!” Mandy’s eyes had turned red with agitation. “Is he Damien? Damien didn’t die… He survived, didn’t he?”
Alyssa took a deep breath. Then, her eyes lit up. “Mandy, you mentioned seeing him smoking in the hallway earlier? Did he leave after smoking, or did he leave while smoking?”
“Maybe my showing up scared him off. He hurried off after putting his cigarette out.”
“Mandy, get Jonah and Silas to go to that balcony as quickly as possible. Have them look for that cigarette butt of his.”
Alyssa’s heart raced. She felt as if that mysterious fog that shrouded her eyes had dispersed a little. “Then, use that cigarette butt to perform a DNA comparison with Damien. We’ll find out if he’s Damien right after we test it!”
With both hands in his pockets and a gloomy look on his face, Remy walked in the hospital’s underground parking lot alone.
He thought about that woman who claimed to be his mother. His heart throbbed in pain and his thoughts were in a mess. He had no idea what to make of it.
“Remy!”
Remy looked up immediately, only to see Sheryl coming before him with a frosty expression on her face. “What are you still doing here? Didn’t Mr. Justin tell you that you had to leave after sending Alyssa to the hospital?”
The look in Remy’s eyes dimmed.
During the night before last, he sent Alyssa to the hospital. Nonetheless, for some reason, he couldn’t feel at ease.
He was afraid that he had hit her too hard, so much so that she wouldn’t be able to come back out of the emergency room alive. Thus, he hadn’t left. He had been watching over her in secret. Still, there was no way that he would share these with Sheryl.
To him, Sheryl was a viper, a scorpion. She was a cold-blooded creature with a human appearance. In fact, she wasn’t actually human. So, why would he bare his heart with her?
“I was watching over Mr. Justin. After all, the Taylors have all come,” Remy answered perfunctorily. The gaze in his eyes was cold.
In a moment of desperation, Sheryl blurted, “It’s because the Taylors are all here that you shouldn’t show up at this place all the more!”
Remy took a step forward. In a deep voice, he asked, “What do you mean?”
Sheryl had her doubts about Remy, but she let them slip in the end. The panic had made her forget about them. She quickly clarified, “Alyssa is a sharp-witted woman. Moreover, you’ve shown yourself to Axel. Once the Taylors realize that you’re at the hospital, they will soon connect you with Alyssa’s car accident.
“Mr. Justin is still at the hospital. With both of you showing up at the same time, Alyssa might suspect that you are connected to Mr. Justin. If that happens, we would be in deep shit!”
Remy pursed his lips tightly together. He said nothing.
“Hurry up and leave. Take my car,” Sheryl urged.
“No need for that,” Remy turned her down coldly. His shoulder brushed past hers.
“Oh, right. You didn’t leave any traces at the hospital, did you?” As the attentive woman that she was, Sheryl questioned him.
Remy was suddenly reminded of the cigarette butt that he had left on the balcony. However, he didn’t put much thought into it because he had never left any evidence at any crime scenes throughout these years of working for Justin.
As such, the police didn’t have his record in their DNA database. They wouldn’t be able to find anything even if he left a cigarette butt.
“I didn’t.”
Upon saying that, Remy left, looking desolate and arrogant.
The next morning, Jeremy jolted awake from his sleep. For some reason, the shock caused him to break out in cold sweat.
The air felt thin. He made his way out from under the covers and picked up his phone from the bedside table. He squinted as he checked his phone.
To his surprise, he had over 20 missed calls from Newton.
Ever since his discharge from the hospital, his head would throb every night. He wasn’t sure if this was a side effect, but he had been having wakeful nights for the past three to four days.
Last night, he felt that he wouldn’t be able to take it if he went on like that. Thus, he took some sleeping pills, which helped him to fall asleep till the day broke.
Jeremy got up while massaging his sore temples. He was just about to ring Newton back when he heard Xavier’s voice from the other side of the door.
“Mr. Walsh, are you awake?”
“What is it?”
“Mr. Walsh Senior is here. He’s asking for you downstairs.”
After washing up, Jeremy changed into a smart-looking black suit and called Julien while he made his way to the living room.
Previously, Julien had given him a dressing down at the hospital, and that interaction ended on a sour note. But, perhaps it was due to his inability to process emotions that he wasn’t bothered by squabbles like these.
All he wanted was for his health to be back at its normal level so he could work as usual. Yet, after three attempts, he wasn’t able to reach Julien. His cell phone was still off.
Jeremy frowned and put his phone back into his pocket.
Both Newton and Javier were in the living room. The air in the room was inexplicably tense.
“Hi, Grandpa. Hi, Dad.” Jeremy first greeted them. Then, he glanced toward Newton coldly. ‘Grandpa, what brings you here?”
Anxiously, Newton answered, “Jeremy, Alyssa was hurt!”
Jeremy’s face was blank and emotionless. “What happened to Ms. Alyssa?”
“She got into a car accident. Come with me to the hospital now to visit Alyssa!” Newton barely slept all night. He had dark circles under his eyes, and he was burning with anxiety.
Xavier’s face paled from the shock.
Alyssa was a skilled driver. He wouldn’t be surprised if she got into a traffic accident because of Jeremy. Who knew if her mental and physical exhaustion caused her to get distracted and end up in an accident?
The moment Jeremy left Alyssa, her life went helter-skelter.
“Was she badly injured?” There was a slight flicker in Jeremy’s deep eyes.
“I called Mr. Winston. Alyssa has come out of the ER and has regained consciousness. But I heard that her entire car flipped to the side. She’s someone with such a tiny frame. How could she take it? Come with me to visit her now!”
“She has quite a few older brothers and her family by her side. It makes no difference even if I went.”
Jeremy lowered his voice and looked down. “Moreover, who I am to her now makes it inappropriate for me to visit her.”
Upon hearing that, Xavier’s face turned even whiter, and his heart went cold.
“Jeremy! What are you babbling about? That’s Alyssa we’re talking about. She’s someone you doted on with your life. She’s Alyssa, the woman you cried over before me again and again, saying that you wanted to beg her to come back to you. How can you be so heartless? I’m really disappointed in you!”
Anger made Newton’s eyes turn red. In fury, he hit his walking stick against the ground hard. “You have a brain condition, but have you lost your human nature as well? Just look at how much Alyssa sacrificed for you. Yet, you aren’t willing to even visit her. Are you even human?”
Jeremy felt something surge within his chest. His gaze was distant and cold. ‘Grandpa, we’ve already broken up. I will only make her suffer even more by hanging around instead of making it a clean break.”
Newton was about to argue when Javier said, “Dad, if Jeremy and Ms. Alyssa have separated, so be it. I don’t feel like this is a bad thing.”
Rage overtook Newton. “Why, you-“
“I couldn’t say anything in the past because they were in love and going through thick and thin together. But Jeremy is no longer in love with Ms. Alyssa. Why do you have to make things difficult for him? Nothing good will come out of it if you force it.”
Javier took a deep breath. He had decided to go all out. With an icy look, he added, “In fact, I feel like Ms. Alyssa didn’t love Jeremy all that much.
“She might have loved him, but I feel like she loves herself more. If she really loves someone, how could she bear to see him risk his life time and time again? How could she bear to have him do such dangerous things?
“When she acted recklessly, had she never considered that Jeremy had a family who cares for him too? What are we to do if anything happened to him? Has she considered this, even once?”
“You-” Newton let out a sharp exhale. A lump rose in his throat, and he choked on his tears.
