Marshall kept a stern face and told the butler to take Lena upstairs.
“Thank you, Mr. Marshall,” Lena said calmly, neither humble nor arrogant, then led her team up the stairs without another word.
Marshall stared blankly at their retreating figures, lost in thought.
“Dad…” Adrian started to speak, but Marshall raised his hand to stop him. “Don’t say anything. I’ve thought it through.”
Daniella stood frozen, her face flushing white and red. Her once-smiling lips pressed into a hard line, and her clenched fists dug her nails deep into her palms. Bitterness and frustration surged in her chest.
“Dani, don’t be upset. We don’t need Velora Atelier anyway. I’ll buy you even more expensive clothes,” Adrian said gently, trying to comfort her.
“Okay.” Daniella forced a smile, but her eyes still burned with resentment. Velora Atelier wasn’t just expensive – it was a symbol of status.
The butler led Lena to the second floor and stopped in front of Abigail’s door. He reached out to push it open, but Lena quickly stepped forward and stopped him.
Standing respectfully at the door, Lena raised her hand and knocked three times. “Ms. Gibson, I’m Lena Gray from Velora Atelier. May I come in?”
The butler scoffed at her polite tone. She is just a useless girl brought back from the countryside, does she really deserve that much respect?
“Come in,” came Abigail’s cold voice from inside.
“Yes.” As Lena opened the door, she glanced at one of her assistants.
After Lena stepped inside with the clothes, a soft noise came from behind, just enough to distract the butler. By the time he realized what happened, the door had already closed, locking him out.
Without looking around, Lena walked straight in and stopped three steps from Abigail. She lowered her head slightly and held the clothes out with both hands. “Ms. Gibson, here are your clothes, prepared according to your latest measurements.”
Abigail glanced at them and pointed casually to the side. “Just leave them there.”
Clothes the elite of Stonebridge could only dream of were treated like nothing here.
“I called you here because I have a question,” Abigail said as she looked back at Lena. “I heard the Gibson family found me a good match. Do you know anything about that?”
Lena hesitated for a second. “Ms. Gibson, the Gibson family wants you to marry the son of the Hawthorne family – Lucas Hawthorne.”
“Lucas Hawthorne?” Abigail’s brows immediately furrowed. If it was the Lucas she’d heard about, then…
Lucas Hawthorne, 25 years old, one of the most outstanding young men in Stonebridge, a dream for countless women. Even when Abigail had just arrived in town, she had already heard his name.
He graduated from a top business school overseas and took over the Hawthorne Group right after returning. At the time, the previous head had just passed away, and the company was on the brink of collapse, struggling with both internal chaos and external threats.
Lucas, with his sharp mind and decisive leadership, quickly stabilized the situation. He then launched a bold and sweeping reform, single-handedly saving the dying company. In just two years, he brought the Hawthorne Group back to the top of Stonebridge’s business world.
Every powerful family in Stonebridge was fighting to marry their daughter to someone like Lucas. The Gibson family, a second-tier family, was hardly in the running. As for Abigail, they wouldn’t have even dared to consider her.
“So, what happened to him?” Abigail thought. Otherwise, they would’ve let Daniella marry him long ago.
“Three years ago, Lucas fell seriously ill,” Lena said, her gaze lowered. “Rumor has it he’s been in a vegetative state ever since. Lately people have been saying he doesn’t have much time left.”
She hesitated for a moment before continuing.
“His grandmother even went to Silverveil Abbey to see some mystic named Lucian. He told her that if Lucas got married soon… it might be enough to bring him back.”
Abigail raised a brow. “Seriously? What is this, the Middle Ages?” she said, “so they’re throwing a wedding at him to change his luck? Sounds like she got scammed.”
Contempt flickered in her eyes…
No wonder the Gibson family rushed to bring Abigail back. They wanted the benefits of a marriage alliance with the Hawthorne family, but couldn’t bear to let their precious daughter Daniella marry a dying vegetable. Naturally, they thought of Abigail – their unwanted biological daughter.
“Ms. Gibson, is there anything you need me to do?” Lena had already prepared for both outcomes the moment she learned what the Gibson family was scheming.
Abigail propped her chin up with one hand, thought for a moment, then said, “You don’t need to worry about this.”
“Yes, Ms. Gibson.” Lena didn’t ask questions and responded respectfully.
She placed another box in front of Abigail. “Ms. Gibson, this is your phone and some other devices we prepared for you.”
Abigail accepted them without hesitation. “Just what I needed.”
Before she came to Stonebridge, she had lived in the rural area with her master. After reuniting with the Gibson family, she was tricked into an asylum and cut off from the world for five years. She knew nothing about the changes that had taken place in Stonebridge.
Whatever she planned next would take careful thought.
But the Gibson family would never provide her with what she needed. In their eyes and hearts, there was only their adopted daughter – Daniella.
Once the people from Velora Atelier delivered the clothes, they left. No matter how the butler tried to pry, Lena’s answers were flawless.
“I think Abigail’s gotten thin. She must’ve gone hungry and cold in that asylum all these years.” Daniella called over her servant. “Go take good care of Abigail.”
Abigail had embarrassed her earlier – there was no way she would let that slide.
“Yes, Ms. Daniella.” Elena Quinn, the butler’s daughter, had served Daniella since she was seven. She was now her most trusted aide.
Abigail looked at the food Elena brought. The bowl of soup was still steaming with a rich aroma.
“Ms. Gibson, this is a kind gesture from Ms. Daniella. She specially had this prepared to help you recover.” Though Elena called her Ms. Gibson, her tone carried not a trace of respect.
Abigail glanced at her coolly. She knew at once this food wasn’t as simple as it looked. “Put it down,” she said calmly.
But Elena didn’t budge. “Ms. Daniella told me to stay until you finish it.”
Abigail stared at her for a long moment. A cold glint flashed in her eyes. “Fine.”
Without hesitation, she picked up the bowl and drank the soup in one gulp, then handed the empty bowl back to Elena.
A hint of triumph crossed Elena’s face as she reached for it.
Abigail casually flicked her fingernail and said, “Tell Daniella thank you for her kindness. My return gift is on the way.”
Elena didn’t take it seriously. Of course, the soup had something added, but it also contained genuine, expensive herbs. Someone like Abigail probably had nothing worth giving back.
She carried the bowl out and hurried to report to Daniella.
Daniella was about to leave when she heard that Abigail had finished the soup. She covered her mouth and laughed gleefully. “What a shame. I have to go to a party now and won’t get to see the show myself.”
With that, she strutted off in her heels, pleased with herself.
