“Carter!”
Isabella appeared, holding Jenarth’s hand, right before them.
Carter’s dark mood lifted at the sight of Isabella. His tone softened immediately. “Isabella, what brings you here? Weren’t you taking Jenarth for a hospital check-up?”
“Jenarth was worried about you. As soon as the appointment ended, he insisted we come find you.”
Isabella guided Jenarth toward Carter. Her gaze fell upon the divorce papers in Victoria’s hand, and she bit her lip, adopting a helpless expression. “Ms. Lewis, you’re far too impulsive. Carter is such a wonderful man – how could you simply divorce him like this?”
“If he’s so wonderful and you admire him so much, why don’t you marry him yourself?” Victoria cast a cold glance toward Carter. “The City Hall is still open. If you’re in a hurry, you’d better get moving!”
“I… Ms. Lewis, Carter and I are completely innocent. I’ve always respected him as an older brother. How could you suggest such a thing?” Isabella looked awkwardly toward Carter. “Carter, I truly…”
“Victoria, whatever issues exist between us, keep others out of it. You chose divorce, so don’t come crawling back to beg. I warned you – once you leave, you’re no longer part of my family. Don’t even think about leveraging our name or resources ever again.” Carter’s voice turned sharp. “The only remaining connection between us is Robert. I’ll respect his choice. If he wishes to return to the Myers family, you cannot stop him. If you fail in his upbringing or compromise his education, my lawyers will be in touch.”
Carter was furious. He had been restraining himself, but now his anger boiled over.
Victoria merely shrugged. “Carter, are you hard of hearing, or just forgetful? Didn’t I already make myself clear? I, Victoria, will never beg you for anything in this lifetime. You’re already part of my past. Thanks for the reminder – there’s truly nothing left between us. You’re the powerful CEO now, so don’t you ever come begging me! I’d consider it terribly unlucky!”
Carter stood frozen, barely containing his rage.
Sure, their emotional connection had never been deep – perhaps almost nonexistent – but they had lived together for six years. And they had… well, they shared a child. Six years as a couple – even without love, shouldn’t there at least be some semblance of mutual regard?
Victoria had spoken those cutting words with such chilling indifference. When had she become so callous?
Hah! Even after the divorce, she’s still playing hard to get? He refused to fall for such transparent tactics.
He would make certain she regretted this – regretted throwing everything away.
Carter clenched the divorce papers tightly and shouted after Victoria, “Fine! Thanks for the reminder. There’s nothing left between us. I can’t believe I was actually concerned about you – worried you’d have nowhere to go after the divorce, no job, no skills to survive. That you’d be terrified of facing life alone, unable to even care for a child properly. Seems I overestimated the situation.”
The more he dwelled on it, the angrier he grew. Glancing down at the documents in his hand, in a burst of fury, he tore them in half right before Victoria’s eyes.
Isabella gasped. “Carter, don’t! If you ever reconsider, you’ll need the original papers!
Once they’re destroyed, there’s no going back!”
But Carter wasn’t finished. He proceeded to shred the documents into countless tiny pieces.
He glared at Victoria, his voice icy. “Reconsider? I, Carter, would never remarry a selfish woman like you. It’s over. There’s nothing left between us now.”
“Carter, why are you being so hard on yourself?” Isabella reached out and gently took his arm, attempting to soothe him. Yet once her hand rested on his, she made no move to withdraw.
Carter didn’t pull away either. He continued staring at Victoria, his eyes filled with even deeper contempt.
Victoria acted as though she hadn’t noticed their contact. She showed no reaction to Carter destroying the divorce papers – her expression remained detached, as if she were merely an uninvolved spectator watching a performance, completely unmoved.
Frustrated by her lack of response, Carter grew even more agitated. He remembered how Victoria used to gaze at him with pure adoration, but now – there wasn’t even a flicker of recognition in her eyes.
This wasn’t right…
Just as Carter was about to erupt, Victoria turned gracefully and made a call. As she spun, her hair lightly brushed against his face, carrying a faint trace of her scent. For a moment, Carter was spellbound.
When he regained his composure, he heard Victoria’s voice.
“Sweetheart, I’m finished here. You can come pick me up now.” She was actually smiling as she spoke.
“Awesome! That was so fast! I never thought you’d get divorced this quickly. Congrats on escaping that hellhole and ditching that jerk! We’re celebrating with a fancy dinner tonight!” Robert’s excited voice came clearly through the phone.
Even without the speaker on, Carter caught every word.
Jerk!
Hellhole!
Celebrating with a fancy dinner!
They had just lost the support of his family, and instead of feeling any remorse, they were off to celebrate? What did he mean by “hellhole” – was his family a hellhole to them?
That little brat Robert had become completely unruly. He hadn’t disciplined him properly in too long, and now the boy was running wild with no manners whatsoever. If this continued, he’d grow up entirely out of control.
As soon as Victoria ended the call, Carter shook off Isabella’s hand and strode forward, attempting to grab Victoria’s arm.
“Victoria, you – “
Before he could finish, a flashy red sports car screeched to a dramatic halt at the entrance, sliding perfectly into place just steps away from Victoria.
Who drove like that in front of the
Courthouse? Such a show-off!
Carter instinctively stepped back. The car had stopped precisely where Victoria stood.
Isabella, startled, moved closer to Carter.
“Carter… what’s happening?”
Carter stared at the eye-catching sports car. It was a mid-range model, worth less than a million, but what puzzled him was its origin. The vehicle was brand new, not even registered yet.
The door swung open and a sharply dressed man stepped out, holding a folder of documents. He circled the car and stopped before Victoria.
“Ms. Lewis! Congratulations!” The man nodded with a smile and handed her the car keys.
“I’ll leave the rest to you.” Victoria waved the divorce papers lightly, accepted the keys, and walked directly to the driver’s side.
“Victoria…”
Carter called out once more.
Victoria paused and glanced back at him.
“When did you learn to drive?” Carter was stunned to see her preparing to take the wheel.
In his mind, Victoria was still that girl the Lewis family had brought back from some remote countryside – the one Charles had arranged for him to marry. After joining his household, she had settled into the role of a housewife, rarely venturing out, with no social circle to speak of, let alone the ability to handle a sports car.
A sly smile curled at Victoria’s lips as she arched an eyebrow. “There are many things you don’t know about me.”
With that enigmatic remark, she completely ignored Carter – who stood frozen in place – slid into the driver’s seat, started the engine with a roar, and sped away, leaving him engulfed in a cloud of dust.
“Cough, cough…” Carter stood dumbfounded, watching her retreating taillights as he choked on the exhaust fumes.
She handled that sports car with effortless precision. Those skills weren’t learned overnight.
What other secrets was she hiding? What did she mean by “many things”?
What had he been missing all along?
