I looked up at Mara to check on her, since she was so quiet. Her eyes were closed and her mouth hung open slightly. The belt laid slack across her lips. “Marabella”, I called out. I sat up and pulled the belt from her mouth. I cupped her face with my free hand, her blood smearing on her cheek from my hand. “Marabella”, I said again, shaking her. “Baby girl, answer me”, I began to panic.
Luca’s POV
I could feel a slow, steady heartbeat in her chest, but her breathing was ragged. “Fuck!”, I yelled. I could feel the car start to slowly move. Mara stirred at my shouting, bringing my attention back to her. “Baby girl, please wake up and talk to me. Please”, I begged, rubbing my thumb along her chin. “It hurts”, she croaked, keeping her eyes closed.
“God, I know, piccola. But you are so fucking strong. Please open your gorgeous eyes for me”, I said, lightly touching her cheek bone. Her eyes fluttered open, then closed. She tried again, meeting my eyes. I could see how dim the light was, her life draining from her. “Stay with me, bambina. You aren’t allowed to leave me. Do you understand?”, I said gruffly, holding back my tears. Her eyes drifted to my lips, “Please just kiss me”, she muttered.
I leaned in and captured her lips. I moved my lips against hers gently. I dipped my tongue into her mouth, taking my time to explore. I laced my fingers in her hair and tilted her head so that I could kiss her deeper. Her hands gripped my neck and shoulders, weakly.
Her body gave into me, surrendering to the pleasure that I brought her, instead of the pain she felt. “Good girl”, I uttered against her lips, before claiming them again. At least this way, I can keep her mind occupied, while also keeping her conscious and responding.
A moan tried to escape her, but only came out as a guttural whimper. “Relax, piccola. Give into me”, I whispered, brushing my lips over hers. Mara released a breath, as she calmed slightly. “Good girl”, I praised, trying to keep her in a subspace. Because I know what she is, even if she isn’t aware yet. I can put her in a subspace. I have known that since early on. And right now, that is a godsend.
I felt the car stop and seconds later the back door was ripped open. “We are here, boss”, Cal said quickly. I picked Mara up, bridal style. “You have to hold the towel for me, bambina. Keep pressure on it”, I said, putting her hand over the towel. I made quick work of sliding out of the seat. Marabella was too weak to keep the right amount of pressure on her wound, resulting in blood pooling from her hip onto my pants and the ground.
Cal reached out in panic, before stopping himself and looking up at me with pleading eyes. I nodded my head in understanding, allowing him my permission to touch her. Cal’s hand landed firmly on the wound, immediately cutting off blood flow and stopping the bleeding.
Together, we rushed her into the hospital doors. “My wife has been shot. She needs a doctor immediately”, I bellowed, as soon as we crossed the threshold into the building. The nurses started moving at my command, bringing a gurney over to us. I laid Mara down and took over holding the towel. Cal stepped back, giving me room.
“Sir, we need you to step away”, one of the nurses said, trying to stop me from following them back. I pushed my way through, one handed. “I’m not leaving her side”, I growled, refusing to loosen my grip on her leg, as I walked next to the gurney, following them through the doors anyway.
“Luca”, Mara mumbled. “Yes, baby girl”, I asked, looking down at her. “Please don’t leave me”, she croaked. Tears had swelled up in her eyes. “I’m not going anywhere, amore mia. They’ll have to fucking kill me if they want to take you away from me”, I growled, loud enough for all of the nurses to hear me clearly.
Mara’s hand searched the bed for mine, so I grabbed ahold of it. “I’m right here, bambina”, I said softly, pulling her hand to my lips to kiss the back of it. She clutched my hand firmly. We walked into a private room, where a doctor waited to start barking orders. The nurses hooked her up to an IV with blood and medicine to help ease her pain, while the doctor prepared a suture kit.
“I have already removed the bullet”, I announced. The doctor nodded as he threaded the needle. “How did this happen?”, the doctor asked. “That’s none of your concern. You know what is, though? My wife on your operating table”, I uttered dangerously. The doctor swallowed hard and started to stitch Mara up.
Mara’s heart rate accelerated as she began to panic. I cupped her cheeks, “It’s okay, bambina”, I whispered. The doctor instructed that she be given sedatives. I watched as the consciousness slipped from her hazel orbs, dimming before closing. I held her face in my hands and rested my forehead on hers, holding her closely while the doctor took care of her wound.
“Mr. Barello, she only needs rest now. I would like to keep her overnight for observation, though”, the doctor spoke carefully. I only nodded my head, knowing the procedures. I refused to release Mara, even as the nurses worked around me to change her into a gown, or check on her vital signs. I want to be right here when she wakes up.
Luca’s POV
Hours passed, as I refused to move from my position. “Boss?”, Cal approached gently. It did not have the affect on me that he had hoped for. “What?”, I asked, shortly. “We have the shooter in custody”, he responded simply. Meaning, he has the shooter in my underground dungeon, back at the compound. “Make him suffer until I return, then I will handle him”, I growled lowly.
