He had to move quickly to avoid getting hit by the eraser that suddenly flew in his direction.

“Crazy bitch.” He scowled, sliding her a disgusted look.

Stick Girl’s hands went to her hips as she glared at him. “What did you say?”

“You know exactly what I said,” he shot back.

“You called me a crazy bitch.”

“And?” he said, shrugging. “It’s the truth.”

The snarl on her face was enough to make him realize he’d just said the wrong thing.

“You think that was crazy?” she asked, voice steadily rising in volume. “You haven’t seen crazy yet, Phillips.”

Stick Girl took a threatening step toward him, clearly undeterred in facing him down. But apparently, in addition to being stupidly brave, she was an absolute klutz, because her foot caught on the leg of her desk, and what was likely meant to be a targeted attack resulted in her tumbling onto him in a tangle of limbs. Sebastian hadn’t thought to brace himself, and the next thing he knew, his chair was tipping backward. It quickly became obvious that with their combined weight and the sheer momentum of her fall, they were going to come crashing down-hard.

The air completely escaped his lungs when his back hit the ground and a surprisingly heavy Stick Girl landed on top of him. Unfortunately, his back wasn’t the only thing to hit the floor, a fact he realized when his head smacked the tile floor.

“What the hell is your problem?” he panted, trying hard to ignore the pounding in his skull and what felt like a gash on his face.

She gave a groan as she rolled off him. “You are my problem. But I swear, that was an accident.”

“Yeah, right,” he scoffed, wincing as he tried to move. “You’re a danger to society.”

“No, I’m just a danger to you.”

The next thing he knew, she was scrambling up and storming out of the room, leaving him on the cold floor with a hand pressed to his face. Instead of getting up, he laid there and tried to recover from the “accidental” tackle until a colorful pair of sneakers came into view a few minutes later.

“What the hell happened to you?”

An upward glance revealed an amused looking Michael staring down at him, an eyebrow raised in question.

“She tackled me,” Sebastian mumbled as he struggled into sitting. “She said it was an accident, but I don’t believe it for a second.”

Michael laughed, offering a hand to help his friend to his feet. “Yikes, the girl actually made you bleed.”

Once Sebastian was safely on his feet, Michael grabbed his chin so he could inspect his friend’s newest injury a little better.

“Looks like she cut you with that ring of hers again,” he concluded, tilting Sebastian’s head back slightly. “That thing really has it out for you.”

Sebastian groaned as he pulled away and touched the cut, wincing when the pain hit. “Great.” He sighed, wiping the blood off his fingers with the bottom of his shirt. “Just what I wanted.”

“What did you do to provoke her this time?” Michael questioned as he nudged Sebastian toward the door.

“I made a comment about her ex-boyfriend,” he admitted begrudgingly as he allowed himself to be guided into the hallway. “Now that I think about it, it was probably a little insensitive.”

“That’s nothing new,” Michael chuckled, dropping his hand from Sebastian’s shoulder. “Hold up a second. Let me go grab the others.”

With the shroud of pain clouding his vision, Sebastian barely noticed when Michael disappeared around the corner. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been standing there before Michael reappeared again, this time with a horrified Jacob and Marcus in tow.

“What the hell happened?” Marcus asked, reaching up to inspect the cut on Sebastian’s cheek.

“Said something stupid to Stick Girl and got tackled,” he answered, wincing once more.

“Brutal.”

“You should see her in bed.”

Michael laughed as he started toward the front doors of the school. “Now we have to take him to the hospital to get his pretty face stitched back up.”

Sebastian raised a hand to wipe away a bit of blood dripping down his cheek. “I’m an idiot.”

In an attempt to comfort him, Jacob slung an arm over Sebastian’s shoulders. “Nothing we didn’t already know. We like you best that way.”

Sebastian ignored the jab. “Did you know Zak and Stick Girl used to date?” he asked, glancing at Jacob.

“Seriously? When was this?”

He shrugged. “I have no idea. She’s still pretty sensitive about it though.”

“You think he cheated on her?”

“I wouldn’t doubt it. She went psycho on me when I brought that up.” Sighing, he ran a gentle hand over the back of his skull. “Actually, I kind of taunted her about it.”

“Why would you do something like that?” Marcus scolded. “You of all people know how much that hurts.”

“Stop trying to make me feel guilty,” he grumbled.

“Well, is it working?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Good,” Marcus said. “I think that tackle was well deserved, then.”

“Accidental tackle,” he mumbled. “But, yeah…you’re probably right.”
