“Ugh-” Jeremy grimaced, letting out a muffled groan audible only to her. She couldn’t help but grin wickedly as she continued to press her heel down on his foot.

Alyssa privately expressed a sigh of relief and thought that it had been cathartic.

Jeremy was left trembling in the stabbing pain that almost killed him.

Gritting his teeth, he cast his glance on Alyssa, who was gloating at him. His frown vanished when he noticed the happiness in her eyes.

He wondered if she felt happy bullying him. If so, he wouldn’t mind letting her get her way.

“Grandpa! I’ve been framed!” 1

Betty was anxious that Jeremy and Alyssa might accuse her in front of Newton, so she swiftly involved

Simon to clear her name.

“Mr. Lynch wouldn’t have secured my release if I were guilty! The police aren’t dumb. The real suspect will leave behind evidence. I was framed by this wicked woman, Alyssa Taylor, right from the start!”

“Mr. Walsh Senior, the police follow a standard operating procedure,” Simon defended Betty. “As Ms. Betty’s attorney, the best I could do was to protect her rights. I have no power to absolve her of any crimes.”

Then, he turned to Alyssa with an accusatory look and remarked, “Ms. Alyssa, I do not understand your

Considering Mr. Taylor’s good reputation, I expected more from his daughter.”

She squinted at Simon and snorted. The absurdity of Simon Lynch and his caustic remarks was beyond belief.

Simon seemed to have forgotten Spencer Lynch’s humbled behavior when the latter brought his sons to greet Winston and ask for help.

Simon had essentially accused Alyssa of playing dirty in Betty’s case.

Jeremy suddenly let out a cold, humorless laugh, a sound that sent shivers down Alyssa’s spine.

He began, “We’re too nice to you, making you think too highly of yourself.”

Jeremy then shot a piercing gaze in Simon’s direction and hissed, “Have you forgotten what I said to you before we came in? Is there something wrong in your head? You forgot about it in a blink of an eye.”

Alyssa’s eyes flickered with confusion. Had Jeremy met with Simon before this? What had happened during their conversation?

Sophia and Betty were taken aback, stepping back to distance themselves from Jeremy’s hostility.

Meanwhile, Simon’s carefully crafted smile began to crumble. His face contorted with fear and rage.

“Jeremy, how could you speak to Mr. Lynch in that manner? He’s our guest!” Javier chided his son. He had plans to appoint Simon to a key role and make Simon serve him. Jeremy’s actions were now jeopardizing those plans.

“He’s your guest, not mine,” Jeremy retorted, his icy gaze sweeping past Javier’s flushed face before settling once more on Alyssa’s enchanting eyes.

His look suddenly softened, as though the entire world had disappeared, leaving only her in his gaze.

“I told you that I will not go easy on anyone who caused trouble for Ms. Alyssa,” Jeremy reiterated.

Alyssa inhaled sharply, trembling in her place. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from his.

Simon swallowed hard, his fists clenched.

Jeremy issued a warning, “Mr. Lynch, take my words seriously this time.”

Every time Alyssa showed up, the Walsh family would fall into chaos and leave on a bad note.

Alyssa had no mood nor reason to explain herself to Newton, for the truth was on her side.

Besides, she had learned about Simon’s character from Winston and Mandy. If he had managed to secure

Betty’s release, it indicated that he had tied up any loose ends.

Even though Alyssa was aware that Simon had coerced Bryan Hanssen into becoming the scapegoat, she could not get the police to reopen the case for the time being.

Simon might appear courteous, but he was equally cunning.

Meanwhile, Newton did not want to put Alyssa on the spot because he had faith in her character. He had witnessed her sincerity, and if he were to lose trust in Allison, there would be no one else he could rely on.

Alyssa wheeled Newton back to his bedroom, with Jeremy annoyingly tagging along the entire time.

However, Newton seemed content that night, a satisfied smile gracing his face when he saw Alyssa and

Jeremy at his side. Grinning from ear to ear, he looked energized and rejuvenated.

Love didn’t only make lovers glow; even their supporters radiated happiness.

“Grandpa, I’m sorry for not visiting you. I have been busy lately. You must be angry at me, aren’t you?”

Alyssa looked guilty.

“Silly child, what are you talking about? I’m just grateful you’re even thinking of me,” Newton replied.

He clasped her warm hand and shot Jeremy a knowing look. “You know, you should enjoy your youth and meet some nice young men.

“I’ve heard you’re close to Landon Harper, Jameson Schmidt, and that bunch. Are there any prospects catching your eye? You can always introduce your date to me. I’ll help you vet him!”

Jeremy felt like he was punched in the chest. He quietly grumbled about Newton’s matchmaking efforts for Alyssa, even though the old man was bound to a wheelchair.

He was concerned that Newton/might inadvertently introduce her to a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

His eyes were bulging with anger as he panted anxiously. On the other hand, Alyssa was surprised.

“Grandpa, how did you learn about Landon and Jameson?”

“Ah, I manage to stay well-informed without ever leaving this house,” gloated Newton.

“Mm. Jameson and I are childhood friends.”

“Childhood friends?” Newton’s heart leaped into his throat.

“Haha, I guess we are like siblings. When we were younger, he was a bit of a weakling, and I was the one always protecting him.”

She lifted her chin and placed her hands on her hips, grinning animatedly. She appeared no different from the bright and lively ten-year-old she once was.

As Jeremy stared deep into her eyes, a sudden wave of dizziness and a throbbing headache overcame him.

Worried that Alyssa and Newton might notice, he quickly turned away. Pressing his temples, he was sweating profusely from the pain.

Her smile overlapped with the blurry and childlike face of the girl deep in his memory.

He had a nagging feeling that he had met Alyssa long ago, but he struggled to conjure that memory.

“Is that so? I never knew you were close with Jameson Schmidt,” Newton responded.

Newton had never been one to indulge in relationship gossip, but this piece of information piqued his interest as it concerned the future of Alyssa and Jeremy.

“He lost contact with me after he settled in Kontina with his mom. It wasn’t until recently that we reconnected,” Alyssa confessed openly to Newton, for there was nothing between her and Jameson.

“Oh, I heard he donated a priceless necklace to your charity auction to support your cause,” Newton, prodded further.

She brushed that off with a smile. “He probably helped me out to thank me for standing up for him when we were younger.”

¦§

“Looks like Victor’s son is a considerate young man,” Newton remarked.

Then, he shot a disdainful look at Jeremy, feeling the heat rising in him. “Well, he’s certainly more agreeable than my cold, inflexible grandson!”

Newton’s intention was not to speak up for outsiders. He merely wanted to provoke Jeremy as a way to motivate his grandson.

“Grandpa, don’t complain about him because of our divorce. I told you clearly that we divorced on good terms. I don’t have any grudges against him,” Alyssa assured Newton.

Her unemotional eyes hurt Jeremy. She explained, “Jeremy isn’t quite as you described. He is appreciative, caring, and affectionate.”

Jeremy felt a sharp pang in his chest, His emotions catching in his throat as he quivered.
