Danika didn’t want to talk to him. She only needed to wait for Evan to wake up. “Where are we stopping? We shouldn’t delay treatment for Evan’s injury for too long.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve arranged everything. The boss will be fine,” Howard said.
Way Too Despicable
When Gilbert and Zack finally found Eustace, it had already been a few hours since Danika had left with Evan. They learned about the airport shooting incident from the news and decided to contact Danika. However, they were surprised to find out that she was already on a plane and couldn’t be reached at the moment.
They sought out Eustace to ask him what had happened and who the target was. Eustace was quite annoyed with their questions, but he answered truthfully based on facts, “It was most likely Evan’s enemies.”
“Is Danika okay? Was she hurt?” Eustace had seen Danika leave, so they could only ask him for more information.
Eustace shook his head and guessed they probably didn’t know about Evan’s plot. He said, “Although she wasn’t injured, Howard pointed a gun at her and forced her to board the plane.”
“What?” Both of them were shocked. They didn’t quite understand what was going on. Wasn’t Howard one of Evan’s men?
“Evan wasn’t really injured at all. It was all his plan. Did Danika not tell you guys?” Eustace slowly explained while looking at the message that Vincent sent him on his phone, which informed him about the destination Evan’s plane was headed to. However, Eustace didn’t think Evan would be able to fly for so long, as he would most likely need to stop midway because he was shot and needed medical attention.
He asked Vincent to keep an eye on it and then looked up at the two shocked people in front of him. Patiently, he recounted the whole course of events to them.
Gilbert and Zack, who were already quite dumbfounded, were speechless after hearing Eustace’s words. They were outraged that everything had been Evan’s wicked plan to keep Danika by his side for the rest of his life. He was way too despicable!
“This is outrageous! We have to save Danika! We can’t let Evan succeed!” Zack exclaimed angrily after regaining his composure. Thinking about Danika being in Evan’s hands, he couldn’t wait to rush over and rescue her.
Gilbert nodded and had no objection. “Yes, I’ll be going overseas now.”
Seeing that he was about to leave, Eustace spoke up, “Don’t waste your time. Even if you find Danika, with your current abilities, you can’t rescue her.”
“Eustace!” Gilbert was a little annoyed. How could Eustace make light of his abilities?
“Do you even know Evan’s true identity?” Eustace asked and thought that Gilbert was being ignorant and ridiculous. After all, he was the one who brought Evan back to the country. They wouldn’t be in this precarious situation now if he hadn’t brought the wolf in sheep’s clothing back with him.
However, he didn’t say that. After all, he knew how much Danika valued her two ‘brothers.” She might be able to give up on Evan, but it wouldn’t be the same for Gilbert and Zack, who were like family to her. She would never give up on them.
Considering they would still see each other often in the future, Eustace didn’t hold it against Gilbert and directed all the criticism to him.
He took out a file from the side and handed it to Gilbert. “Take a good look. The Evan you know is not the Evan you thought you knew.”
After Gilbert took the file, Zack walked over and sat beside him. Both of them had serious expressions as they looked at the information.
Gilbert had no idea that Evan was the leader of a group of notorious mercenaries. He’d never even thought about it. In his eyes, Evan was just a person who happened to be capable and intelligent. He didn’t expect someone like him would be the famous mercenary leader.
Closing the file, Gilbert felt a bit discouraged. “You’re right. I don’t hold a candle to him now.”
Even if he could find Evan, he might not be able to defeat him.
I’ll Bring Her Back
“What do you mean? Are we truly powerless?” Zack couldn’t believe it. He hadn’t seen Evan for years, but he’d managed to climb up to such a high position abroad. It was simply too incredible.
Why didn’t he notice Evan’s talent for being a boss of the underworld before? Zack’s impression of him was still stuck at the time when Evan followed them around like a lost puppy.
The atmosphere fell silent, and Gilbert looked at Eustace. Even if he didn’t want to, he had to speak up. “Eustace, you’re the only one who can save Danika now. I beg you…Please bring her back.”
Eustace had been waiting for Gilbert to say that. He replied with a smile, “Even if you didn’t say anything, I would still bring her back.”
“Thank you—“
“However, I hope that after Danika comes back, you will respect her choices. ” Especially when it came to their relationship-he didn’t want Gilbert to voice any objections.
After all, in Danika’s eyes, Gilbert was still very important. She would be stuck between a rock and a hard place if he kept disagreeing.
Gilbert naturally understood the meaning behind his words and smiled bitterly. “Don’t worry. I have never disrespected Danika’s choice.”
Even though he didn’t like Eustace before, he’d only advised Danika against becoming Eustace’s girlfriend and hoped she would consider someone else. However, he never tried to stop her from doing anything.
“That’s good, then? Eustace nodded in satisfaction.
Gilbert and Zack left, and Eustace didn’t stay at home but went to the company. He had to go to another country, but before he left, he had to make sure that Quincey Group was stable. He didn’t want any problems to arise while he was abroad.
Nightfall came quietly, but the lights in the CEO’s office of Quincey Group had yet to turn off.
Far away on an island in a country called Monaerim, the sun had just risen. Danika had taken a nap on the plane. When she woke up, the plane had already landed on the island.
“Let’s get off the plane. We’ve reached our destination.” Danika didn’t know where she was, but she didn’t ask and followed Howard off the plane.
She didn’t see Evan and was a little worried. “Where’s Evan?”
She no longer said his name with a sense of kinship. In her heart, he was no longer the brother figure and dear friend he once was.
“Boss has been sent to the hospital. As for you…” Howard glanced at her and thought that since Danika already knew everything, she probably wouldn’t have a good attitude toward Evan in the future. He decided that before Evan woke up, he would teach her a lesson and make sure she knew what she should and shouldn’t do.
“Bring her to the castle and lock her up. Don’t let her run away before Boss wakes up,” Howard ordered.
If Danika had known what was good for her and behaved appropriately, she wouldn’t have become a prisoner. Unfortunately, she’d been uncooperative and far too indomitable.
Howard kept Danika locked in a dark dungeon and didn’t give her any food. Time passed by from seconds to minutes and then to days. Danika was so starved that she’d lost all sense of time. She had no idea how long she’d spent in that wretched dungeon.
Was it one day? Or was it ten days?
Danika didn’t know, but she knew that she was about to die.
Suddenly, with a clanging sound, the iron door opened. Danika thought Howard had come since he often visited and asked her the same few questions every single time. She’d grown tired of hearing those repetitive questions.
“Will you stay willingly now?”
“Do you agree to be Evan’s woman?”
“Do you submit?”
“What a lunatic,” Danika thought disdainfully.
But as she struggled to lift her head, she saw that the person who had come was not Howard but an extremely beautiful woman. Danika didn’t know her, but the woman was clearly full of hostility toward her.
The next second, the woman suddenly stepped forcefully on Danika’s wrist. The sharp pain instantly made her snap out of her dazed state.
“Who are you?” Danika asked in a hoarse voice.
She was surprised to hear her own voice after so long. It sounded so unfamiliar.
Give Her a Little Lesson
“Are you Danika?” the woman asked with a predatory gaze.
Danika looked at her helplessly, feeling the pain coming from her wrist vividly. She couldn’t muster up the strength to talk to her assailant at all.
The woman wasn’t angry and continued to exert force. She finally removed her foot when she saw Danika’s increasingly strained expression.
She squatted down, lifted Danika’s chin, and mocked, “That’s more like it. Here I was, wondering how pretty the woman Evan loved could be.”
It wasn’t hard to tell that the woman felt she was much better looking than Danika.
“But maybe you just happen to be Evan’s cup of tea.” The woman then took out a small dagger from her bag and waved it close to Danika’s face menacingly. “If I make a few cuts on your face, Evan probably won’t like you anymore.”
No one liked ugly things. The woman thought that Evan was no exception. She came to the conclusion that Evan would no longer like Danika if she became ugly. Therefore, she was ready to take action as she spoke.
Danika wanted to resist, but she simply didn’t have the strength to do so. She could only stare at the person in front of her and made sure to remember her face.
Just then, the dungeon door was opened again, and Howard walked in. He immediately saw what the woman was about to do. Feeling alarmed, he quickly stepped forward to stop her. “What do you think you’re doing, Olivia?!”
He arrived just in time-if he was any later, Danika would have been disfigured.
“What do you think? I’m just giving her a little lesson.’ Olivia Myers stood up, looking at Danika as if she was looking at something filthy. “Evan has suffered so much because of her. Are you still going to help her?” she asked.
Howard glared at her and warned impatiently, ‘She’s the person Boss wants. He won’t let you off the hook if you dare to touch her.”
Olivia was a little intimidated when she heard that, but she still countered boldly, “Evan was shot because of her. Does he still like her after what she’d made him go through?’
Howard rolled his eyes and gave Olivia a dismissive wave. ‘Do you think you really know Boss so well? Step aside. He wants to see her.”
“Evan is awake?” Olivia was delighted, and without waiting for Howard to say anything else, she’d already left the dungeon to see Evan.
Howard looked at the severely weakened Danika and cautioned coldly, “I’ve already told you everything you need to know. If you’re a smart person, you should know what to do. You’re on our turf now. If you want to survive, you better not make Boss unhappy.”
He kept repeating himself, not because he was concerned about Danika, but because he was worried about Evan.
Evan had just woken up, and his body hadn’t fully recovered. If Danika were to act up and go against his wishes now, he would definitely be angered, which wouldn’t be good for his recovery.
Danika didn’t speak, and Howard didn’t know if she’d really taken in his words.
After that, Howard called for someone to carry Danika out and have her eat, bathe, change into new clothes, and dress up before bringing her into Evan’s room.
When they entered, Olivia was sitting by Evan’s bed, cutting apples for him with a smile on her face. However, her expression turned sour upon seeing Howard bring Danika in. But because Evan was present, she didn’t dare say anything.
“Boss, Danika is here.” Since this was their turf, Howard didn’t bother addressing Danika as Miss Zellweger. She was a prisoner and had no way of retaliating.
Upon hearing Danika’s name, Evan snapped out of his daze and couldn’t hide his joy upon seeing her there.
“Danika,” he called out and beckoned to her, but Danika stood still. Seeing Evan again made Danika feel as if she’d gone back in time somehow.
