The urge to press the call button at her bedside was strong, but her body didn’t listen to her one bit.
“Then…then w-why are you here?”
Complications
“No innocent should be punished, and no one deserving should escape it,” Ethan said coldly, eyes boring into Yvonne’s.
She was truly afraid now.
A fearful thought in the back of her mind warned her that the man might actually put her in mortal danger if she didn’t tread carefully.
Tears began falling from her eyes.
“Please forgive me.I was wrong for saying what I said.I swear I didn’t mean it.”
“Really?”
“Yes, yes, I swear! I didn’t mean to put her in danger. Why would I even want to do that? I don’t have anything against her!”
Yvonne tried her best to sound convincing.
Sadly, Evan wasn’t in the mood to be kind.
Plus, Yvonne wasn’t even being honest right now, so there really was no need.
“Oh? What did I hear about you two feuding in Parrington, then? Are you really sure you didn’t purposely put her in danger?”
Yvonne instantly understood the extent of Evan’s knowledge now.
If he really was there to avenge Danika on her behalf, there was no way she’d leave without suffering through something.
Her voice grew cold and to the point.
“What do you want then?”
“Not your death, I assure you.” Evan clicked his tongue.
Several bodyguards instantly flooded the room, one with a blade in hand.
“I just think we could all do with a little less talking from your end.” Yvonne started quivering again as the guards went up to her.
“What -what are you doin—urgh!”
The men forced her jaw open, making her stay still on the hospital bed.
“Careful, don’t kill her,” Evan ordered before leaving the ward.
He wasn’t in the mood for blood and gore at the moment.
At the door, he tossed out, “Leave her in the countryside once you’re done. I don’t care where. Just make sure she doesn’t show up in the city again.”
Better to keep people like her out of Danika’s way.
There soon came a blood-curdling scream from the hospital ward.
Evan hummed a tune to himself, thinking there’d be one less chattering tongue in Bardoff City from now on.
After leaving the hospital, he called Danika.
“Hey, Danika. You’re on leave today, right?”
He wanted to make sure Danika wasn’t aware he’d come here today.
“I heard you moved into a new place. Why haven’t I been invited yet~?” Evan teased, though his eyes focused elsewhere, deep in thought.
“Alright. I’ll be right there.”
He hung up the call, then hopped onto his car, driving to Danika’s neighborhood.
Danika sighed after the call ended. She didn’t refuse to invite Evan over even if she’d rejected him because it wouldn’t make sense to cut him off to that extent. She then got up to clean her living room.
Then came another phone call, this time from Gilbert.
“I’ve emailed you everything I found on Janet Hale.Take a look and tell me what you think.”
The moment Danika heard how solemn Gilbert’s tone was, she instantly knew just how serious things were.
“Alright.” She instantly opened up her email to read the information sent to her.
The more she read through them, the more she realized just how complicated that woman was.
Janet’s Past
Danika calmed herself down before calling Gilbert once again.
“We can’t let Zack’s relationship with her continue.”
“I feel the same way,” Gilbert agreed.
He’d already decided so before getting Danika’s response. He had to take care of his brother, after all.
“But we shouldn’t be too in his face lest he gets defensive,” Danika advised.
People in love, especially those new to it, usually put love above all else.
That was why she was concerned Zack might not take it well if Gilbert was direct.
“Why don’t I show him the information first, let him see what kind of person Janet is. We’ll see what he decides to do next.”
Maybe Zack would break up with Janet on his own accord after reading the info.
“Good idea.”
The siblings exchanged further conversation before ending the call.
Danika sighed as she glanced at the information in her email log. She’d had a good first impression of Janet — quiet, respectful, demure.
But after reading the information, she realized the woman might have been faking it all.
Janet had a poor childhood. Her parents favored their son more than their daughter, so she was constantly mistreated.
It carried on even until she became an adult, as the money she earned was almost always funneled back to her family.
While Danika disapproved of this, it’s not like she had the right to say anything.
What upset her the most was what Janet chose to do next.It wasn’t her fault she grew up in such a family, nor the fact that she put everything into working hard to earn money and marry well so she would never have to worry about her family again. It was the method she chose that was unacceptable.
According to Gilbert’s information, Janet had never stopped dating since she got into college.
Every boyfriend she had was richer than the next, even until after she graduated and started working.
It was as if she’d do anything to marry rich.If Janet was entirely uninvolved with Zack, Danika would definitely not interfere with her choices in life.
However, her target was now Zack.
How was Danika going to just sit by and let Janet do as she pleased? Worse still, Janet was already in a relationship when she met Zack, dating a man at least a decade older than she was.She then broke up with him and soon became Zack’s girlfriend.
Her end goal was obvious, so she’d do anything to continuously find a man richer than her current prospect, uncaring of any love she had in the relationship.
There was a great chance that that was how Janet treated Zack. She just hadn’t found a target richer than Danika’s brother for the time being.
Or she did but knew she wouldn’t stand a chance yet.
Danika shook her head.
How did Zack land himself in such a situation on his first try at romance? If he knew about Janet’s past and was still okay with it, then Danika wouldn’t know what to do anymore.
Just then, her doorbell rang.Danika took a deep breath to gather her emotions, then went to open the door.
I Don’t Like Being the Only One There
“Evan,” Danika greeted, turning to let Evan come in.
The man went into the living room with several grocery bags in hand.
“I didn’t know what housewarming gift would be best for you, so I thought I’d make dinner instead.”
“I’ve never tried your cooking before.” Danika smiled, surprised by the gesture.
Did everyone she knew know how to cook, save for her?
“You’re in for a treat then.”
Evan then brought the bags to the kitchen.
Danika followed along. She’d thought to invite Evan out for dinner after a quick chat, so she didn’t refuse his gesture to cook now.
Evan started taking out the ingredients and washing them in the sink.
