“Of course! Alfred always gets it right.”
Melissa nodded, pleased, as though she was the one being complimented, not Alfred.Danika glanced at her but said nothing. She thought, “Ah, another woman in love.”
“Boss, you can always call me to handle these tasks.I promise you’ll be satisfied,” Melissa suggested.
Danika nodded and joked, “Why? Are you feeling sorry for Alfred?”
“He’s very busy.Just delegate the minor tasks to me,”
Melissa chuckled dryly.
Indeed, she felt sorry for Alfred.Speechless, Danika agreed, “Sure, I’ll hit you up instead.”
Melissa chuckled sheepishly after hearing that.
After the apartment tour, Danika looked satisfied and signed the purchase agreement on the spot. She reminded Melissa to sort out the apartment situation as soon as possible because she would move in within a few days.
Melissa agreed to it.
Later, they left the apartment, and Danika went to visit the mother and daughter under Melissa’s lead.
Danika stared out the window of Melissa’s car as they drove further away from the city center. She could tell that the mother and daughter were not doing well.
“Boss, I immediately looked into the mother and daughter after you asked me to.The woman is Helga Stromberg, and her daughter is called Amy Hansel. They left the hospital yesterday and went home, but her husband kicked her out. They even signed the divorce papers and would go through the official procedure ina few days.”
Danika nodded with worry.
“Where are they staying now?”
“Helga brought Amy to stay with her younger sister. It’s quite far, though—half an hour away by car,”” Melissa answered.
Residences in the center of Bardoff City were expensive.
Most people could barely afford to rent them, let alone own one.
Danika sank into silence and decided to only discuss it further when she met with Helga and Amy.
Half an hour later, Melissa parked the car in front of a low-rise apartment.
When she walked into the place with Danika, they realized it was a rental apartment with many tenants.
Soon, Melissa led Danika to the door of the unit and knocked on it.
The door opened, and they saw the face of a woman.
They had not introduced themselves, but Danika immediately recognized the woman because of her resemblance to Helga.
The woman asked, “Who are you here for?”
“Hello! Is Helga Stromberg at home?”
Melissa asked with a smile and tried her best to look friendly.
The woman remained alert, wondering who’d even look for Helga, given her current circumstances. She even suspected that the women were sent by Hugo Hansel to stir trouble.
Sensing her wariness, Danika quickly explained, “I’m her attending physician.Just tell her that I’m Danika Zellweger. She’ll know.”
The woman shot Danika a glance, seemingly less wary than before.
“Okay.Wait a minute.I’ll check with her.”
Still, she locked the door and had them wait outside.
Worried That I’d Trouble You
Melissa dealt with some complicated feelings as she asked Danika, “Do I look fierce?”
Why was Helga’s sister willing to talk to Danika but not her? She wondered if she wasn’t friendly enough when she introduced herself.
“You’re alright.” Danika struggled to answer.
Melissa always had a no-nonsense air around her, perhaps from her regular martial arts practice, which could make her appear unfriendly.
Danika was a martial arts practitioner too, but she was different from Melissa in that she wasn’t only focused on the practice.
That could explain why she looked gentler than Melissa.
Melissa looked upset but didn’t say a word.
The door opened again, and the woman from just now poked her head out and said, “Come in.”
Danika and Melissa followed her into the place, where they could see items scattered all around.
They went into the only bedroom, where they found Helga lying on the bed, looking worse than before.
“Dr.Zellweger, why are you here?”
She was surprised to see Danika.
When her sister told her that a Danika Zellweger was at the door, she thought the visitor was someone with the same name.It turned out to be Danika, indeed.
Danika went up to her, feeling complicated.
“Where’s Amy?”
“Oh, she went to play with the other kids downstairs,” Helga answered.
Danika took a seat by the bed and explained, “I’m here to tell you that we figured out a way to pay for your surgery. You can undergo surgery without worries.”
“Dr.Zellweger, I know you’re a kind soul, but I can’t trouble you.”
Before this, Danika had wanted to pay for her surgery. She rejected Danika because she thought that Danika had come to her sister’s to bring up the suggestion again.
Danika hurriedly shook her head.
“No, I’m not the one paying— there’s a charity helping out financially struggling patients by paying for the surgeries.Helga was either too shocked or confused because she fell into silence for a moment.
Her sister smiled instead.
“Is that true? That sounds too good to be true.”
The last thing she wanted was to watch helplessly as Helga inched closer to death, but she had no choice as she could not pay the hefty surgery fees.
“Of course! I wanted to tell Helga about it this morning, but she left the hospital yesterday.”
Danika pretended to look angry, making Helga feel bad about the unannounced departure.
Helga lowered her head and whispered, “I’m just worried I’d trouble you.”
It didn’t matter what time she left the hospital.
She even saved a day’s worth of hospitalization fees by leaving early. Not only did Danika not blame Helga, but she also felt bad for her.
“Everything’s fine now.You don’t have to worry about the fees, so come to the hospital with me and continue your chemo. You’ll be scheduled for surgery in two weeks.”
“Dr.Zellweger, this is not a lie, right?”
Helga still seemed worried at the coincidence.
“Why would I lie to you? Isn’t this good news?”
Puzzled, Danika wondered why Helga was dragging her feet.
Melissa could stand it no more, but her approach was much more blunt. She argued, “I bet your husband is probably busy getting himself a new wife.He wouldn’t have time for your daughter. Are you sure you and your daughter would have a better life under him? She looked into Helga’s husband when she carried out the investigation on Helga under Danika’s orders.
Upon checking, she was aghast to discover the jerk that was Helga’s husband.
I Trust You
Even when Helga was at death’s door, the jerk didn’t bother to care for her.
Not only that, he kicked her out of the house along with their daughter to not affect his chances of remarriage.
More damningly, he was not officially divorced—the couple was in the cooling-off period mandated by the law—but he was already looking to get a new wife.
One didn’t have to guess the fate of Amy living with a father like him.
Initially, Helga was doubtful about the existence of the charity that Danika mentioned.
However, she came to a realization after hearing Melissa’s words.
Regardless of whether the charity existed, she needed to undergo surgery and survive, as that was the only way to take care of her daughter and watch her grow up happily and healthily.
Half an hour later, she followed Danika and Melissa into their car.
This time, she left Amy under the care of her sister instead of bringing the kid along.
If her surgery was a success, she’d return to pick Amy up.
