“Fine, goddamn it.I know I’m no match for either of you.” Paul rolled his eyes.
Eustace clearly just didn’t want to get on Danika’s bad side.
Still, even as Danika was powerful on the surface, she might not have the same reign and tenacity in the underworld where Paul ruled.
Knowing Paul had his backup plans, Eustace left the office.He soon got a call from Zeke, asking him to come over.
Eustace didn’t refuse, having already guessed what it would be for.He might as well explain himself, seeing they were still working together.
Meanwhile, Blake was under her family’s spotlight back home, their gazes mixed with contempt, amusement, and ridicule.
Blake knew very well what was on their mind; how much of a laughing stock she was after all the effort to climb onto Eustace Quincey had gone to waste just like that.
“He hadn’t even inherited the family title before he broke up with her,” they sneered.
Even Blake found it ridiculous.
“Wasn’t your relationship going smoothly? Why the sudden breakup?”
Blake’s grandfather grumbled.He had held out hope that Blake would succeed with her plans.
That was down the drain now.
“It was because of Danika Zellweger!” Blake complained.
“They were in a relationship back then, and now Eustace wants her back.”
But her grandfather didn’t care why, only how.
“So? Is there no hope left for you and Eustace Quincey?”
“I won’t give up, Grandad.Please let me try ag—“
“That’s enough!”
Blake’s father roared.He had never had a good impression of her daughter, so the news didn’t surprise him one bit.
The man gazed at his father, saying, “Dad, Eustace contacted me before the news was released.He’s assured our cooperation continues even though he’s broken up with Blake.All terms and conditions as before still apply.”
Eustace was choosing to work directly with the Watkins instead of through Blake.
“Can we trust him?”
“We’re all in this for our own gain, Dad.Whether we can trust him is irrelevant.”
While Blake’s grandfather grew silent in thought, she wanted to speak up again when her mother stopped her,gesturing for her to keep her mouth shut.
Blake pouted, fuming in silence.
After a while, the old man nodded.
“Alright.I’m still uncertain if that kid can win the title in his family.It’d be good for us to continue working with him for the time being, but we still have to be careful lest that old fox finds us out.”
“Alright.”
Give Up
Blake was boiling with rage in her room.She had finally realized why Eustace broke up with her—the man had seen just how little importance she held in her family, so not even breaking up with her would stop their working together.
As much as Blake knew it herself, she still couldn’t accept it.She had spent so many years trying to win her family’s approval.
A man like Eustace on his way to becoming head of his family could’ve been her one-way ticket to gaining stronger footing in her family, but that dream had dissipated in just one night.
Blake’s anger rose the more she thought about it, especially how Danika was the cause.She played a part in it too.
If not for her operating on Eustace, he wouldn’t have recovered his memories and broken up with Blake.
“Just let it go, dear.Your father and your brother can handle the business world. You just focus on finding a nice young man to marry, hm?”
Oblivious to Blake’s train of thought, her mother could only try and console her.
Blake snapped, “Why? Why can my brother be a part of the family’s business when I can’t? Am I that unworthy?”
Her brother was nothing but a useless piece of shit in her eyes.
Their family would likely fall from their current pedestal in the Ten Elites if he became the heir.
“your brother…well, he’s a man, and men are meant to focus on this area.”
Blake’s mother didn’t understand where Blake got those strange thoughts from.
“So just because he has a stick between his legs means he can do whatever he wants without consequences, even if that means doing things without even thinking them through with his stupid brain?”
It was fine if the rest of her family thought so, but having her own mother feel the same way pained her too much.
Now her mother was distraught.
“Your brother isn’t stupid.He was just praised for being gifted two days ago.”
Gifted? Blake nearly laughed out loud.
If that shit weren’t born a Watkins, he would’ve starved to death on the streets long ago.
“Why are you so biased, Mom? I’m your flesh and blood, too,” Blake sighed, trying to remind this woman she had more than one child.
Sadly it worked, but not in the way Blake wanted it to.
“I know.That’s exactly why I don’t want you to participate.It’s all hard work and stress, Blake.Why don’t you do whatever else makes you happy and settle down with a young man? Do you have any idea how many people out there are envious of the life you have?”
Even now, Blake’s mother couldn’t understand why she insisted on joining the family business.
What was wrong with being a pampered young lady from a wealthy household? Blake gnawed on her lip.
“No way in hell do I want a life like that!”
Yes, the public might envy her wealth, thinking of her as a high and mighty Watkins who could do as she pleased, but no one knew the truth.
No one knew how powerless she was in the family.
Heck, she might even be used as a pawn for an arranged marriage.
“Blake Watkins!”
Her mother cried, angry now.
“I’m telling you straight right now.Your father was the one who sent me to talk to you, so you should know what he intends you to do.Even if you accomplished something wonderful, you’d never become head of the family, so just give up.You are also not to interfere in the deal between our family and the Quinceys.As for Eustace, if you can convince him to date you, fine.But if you can’t, then stay away from him.”
The more Blake listened to her, the more despair and rage grew in her heart.
“Fuck off!” she screamed, pointing at the door.
“Get the fuck out! Now!”

Eustace, meanwhile, had gone to meet Zeke to talk to him about the breakup with Blake.
“I didn’t feel like we were compatible after some time together.That’s why I chose to do it,” Eustace explained.
Though it was just a way to placate them, and they both knew the real reason why, Zeke still didn’t point it out.
“I see.Might as well save everyone some time, hm.”
“Yes.Thank you for understanding.”
Eustace gave him a bow out of respect.
The two conversed briefly for several more minutes, with Eustace reporting how the company was doing and getting the old man’s approval before he finally left. Zeke immediately dropped his polite mask afterward.
“Why do you think he broke up with Blake Watkins?” he asked his butler, who had appeared behind him.
The butler gave it some thought, then said, “Probably because he doesn’t think he needs the Watkins” help to become family head.”
No one had any idea where he got that confidence from.
“I doubt it.Do you really think the Watkins would call off their deal with Eustace just because they broke up with one of their many children?”
The butler nodded in understanding, saying nothing in return.
After a moment, Zeke said, “For some reason, I’m starting to wonder if I made the right choice.”
His butler was surprised to hear that.
“Do you find Eustace hard to control?”
“Yes.He’s not easily manipulated.”
Had he placed his family at risk by letting Eustace return? “Are you sure you’re not overthinking things, sir? So long as you never let him, Eustace would never be able to succeed as family heir even if he did accomplish great feats.”
