“Here, drink up.” She was taken aback, followed by embarrassment.
“Look at me, making the patient pour me water.”
“It’s not a big deal.I’m almost recovered.”
Zack felt completely fine.
If the doctor hadn’t forced him to stay for a few more days, he would have left the hospital right away.
She sipped on the water, messy thoughts crowding her mind.He was nervous because he had no idea what was in her mind.His hand was sweating as he held a diamond ring tightly, the one he had requested someone to quietly deliver yesterday.
“Janet, have you ever thought about your life in the future?’ he asked, attempting to divert her attention.She fell into silence.It took her a while to answer, “I guess I’ll be like the average woman, living my ordinary but remarkable life with a husband who loves me and two cute kids.”
That was her dream.
Zack was touched by her description, for it was the life he looked forward to as well.
“Janet, if…if I’d like to build that life with you, will you…” he stammered nervously and found himself at a loss for words.
However, he had one knee on the ground as he showed her the ring.
“You…”
She was stunned.
“Will you marry me?”
He finally found his voice after a while.
She was jolted back to reality—this was a marriage proposal.It wasn’t anything grand, and they didn’t even have a third party to be a witness, but she believed he wasn’t joking.
Staring at the man with one knee on the ground, she sensed the sincerity in his eyes that came with a mix of nervousness.She wanted to say yes, but she was reminded of Gilbert’s doubt and her parents’ announcement of coming to Bardoff City for Zack.She hesitated.
If she agreed to marry him, her parents would think that they were in the right to meet Zack.
They might even pester her for her entire life.
“Janet, will you marry me?”
His heart almost leaped out of his mouth as he waited for an overdue answer.He was confident that she’d say yes because they got along well when they were dating, and they were ready for marriage.
However, her silence crushed his confidence.
She Was Not to Be Trifled With
“I’m sorry, Zack, that was too sudden.I haven’t…”
Words stumbled out of her mouth, and thoughts jumbled up in her head.She was telling him that she wasn’t ready, that it was too sudden, and that she needed to think about it.But her words were stuck in her throat in the next second because he had pulled her into a hug.She was quiet.
Feeling the warmth from his body, she badly wanted to say yes without any care in the world, but…she didn’t have the courage to do so.
Perhaps, just like Gilbert had said, life for Zack would be easier without her.
Zack wouldn’t have had to face the hazards of getting involved with her parents.
“It’s alright, Janet.I can wait.”
Zack accepted her explanation of the proposal being too sudden.
After all, he had indeed acted impulsively.He had been thinking about marriage, but the early proposal was outside his original plan.He understood her panic and her refusal to say yes.
Instead of feeling angry, he was upset at himself for rushing the proposal.It wasn’t the right time.
Janet gave him a nod in a daze.He didn’t press further, much to her relief.
Anyway, she didn’t have to worry about giving him an answer at the moment.
Meanwhile, Danika and her team had left Bardoff City and crossed the borders into a small town in a district near the city.
Although the town was unaffiliated with Bardoff City, people there were rich because they were close to the city.
Therefore, it shocked Danika that Janet’s parents would even think of giving up their daughter for a loan.
Danika found her way to Janet’s family home, where laughter could be heard from within.
None of Janet’s family seemed to care about her well-being in Bardoff City.
Danika went through her plan with Melissa in the car.
After hearing the plan, Melissa gave her a thumbs up.
“Roger that.Don’t worry.I won’t disappoint you.I’m a professional when it comes to acting.”
Danika wasn’t planning to meet with Janet’s parents because she was afraid of giving herself away.
No one knew if Janet’s parents had looked into Zack’s background.
If they did, they’d recognize her as well.
That would foil her plan, which was why she needed to call for Melissa’s help.
Later, Melissa and a few of her bulky men knocked on the door of Janet’s parents’ home.
The family was faring quite well for owning a three-story house in the town.
At least, they must be far from starving.
Soon, someone answered the door.
Melissa recognized her as Janet’s mom from the files that Danika shared.”Who are you?”
Janet’s mom frowned at the sight of a female stranger.
Melissa, donning a pair of sunglasses with a few huge guys with her, looked like she was not to be trifled with.
“Are you Janet Hale’s mother?”
Melissa demanded to know as she forced her way into the house.
Her bodyguards followed suit and stood behind her when she sat on a chair, looking pompous and threatening.
Not only was Janet’s mom shocked, but even her dad and her brother, seated in the living room, appeared confused.
The trio huddled together and exchanged glances.
They had no idea about Melissa and the reason she came knocking on their door.
One thing was for sure—she was not to be trifled with.
“Miss…”
“Who are you calling ‘Miss’? Do you have no manners?”
Melissa glared at the unlucky one who spoke up as one of her bodyguards grabbed Janet’s brother by the collar and threw him on the floor.
“Ah! That hurts! Dad, Mom, save me!”
Janet’s brother winced in pain and wailed while the bodyguard stepped on his arm.
We Have Not Done You Any Wrong
“What are you doing? Let go of my son!”
Janet’s mom was jumping in panic when she saw her son assaulted.But Melissa had no intention of stopping.She had heard from Danika about the wrongdoings of this family.
They had pawned their daughter to get money for dowry to be used in their son’s marriage.
“How wicked does one have to be to do that?” she wondered.She decided to give them a lesson and scare the hell out of them to prevent them from giving Janet more trouble.
“The life of your son is in my hands.I’d advise you to behave.
“With a smirk, Melissa waved at the bodyguard, who stepped harder on the arm of Janet’s brother.The sound of bones snapping echoed in the house.Now, even Janet’s dad was panicking, but he didn’t do anything rash, knowing they could not afford to get on the wrong side of these thugs.
“This lady, who…who exactly are you? We have not done you any wrong.Why would you hurt my son?”
He tried to calm down and sounded as polite as possible.
Given his amicable attitude, Melissa finally declared, “We’re here today because your daughter doesn’t know better.She has been sold to my boss, but she keeps thinking of running away.This must be the fault of her parents for not raising her well.Don’t you think I should teach you a lesson?”
The moment they heard that the trouble had something to do with Janet, the old couple hurriedly waved their hands.
“We have nothing to do with Janet Hale now.We’ve given her up to you, so she belongs to you now.If she tries to run away again, just give her a good beating.Over time, she won’t think of escaping anymore,” Janet’s mom proposed the idea, much to Melissa’s disbelief.
How could a mother say that? However, Melissa noticed the woman’s eyes on her son, looking as if she was feeling the pain as well.She came to realize that Janet’s mom was merely playing favorites.
“Who knows if you’re telling the truth? You could be working with her, waiting for her to escape so that you can sell her to someone else! Is that how you make money?”
Melissa chuckled icily.She didn’t trust their words at all.
