Danika smiled, too.She knew he was very stubborn about Eustace ending up with her, so she understood him.

“Grandpa, you knew of my identity and wanted me to end up with Eustace so that I could help the Quinceys. But what about now? Eustace is the head of the Quincey family. He doesn’t seem to need me anymore,” Danika said curiously.

Old Mr.Quincey had his schemes, but now it seemed they had vanished into thin air.

At these words, Old Mr.Quincey seemed embarrassed. He used to care too much about the Quinceys’ development.

Once he knew that Danika was a Zellweger, he made Eustace marry her, and even after their divorce, he wanted them to be together.

But then…He smiled.

“I’m old, but I was young, once.I could tell that Eustace truly liked you, and you had some sort of feeling for him too.I had no reason not to support you.”

“You’re so good to Eustace,” Danika said from the bottom of her heart.

She could tell that as long as Eustace liked something, Old Mr.Quincey wouldn’t deny it.It was just that Eustace had not fallen for anyone else throughout all these years.

Old Mr.Quincey sighed. He looked at the kitchen.

“He was brought up by me.Since young, I nurtured him to be the successor of the Quinceys. He didn’t have a happy childhood.

Now that he’s older and much stronger, I want him to be happy and to spend the remainder of his life with someone he loves.”At the mention of Eustace’s past, Danika grew solemn.

“It’s already in the past.Things will look up in the future.”

“Yes, they will.”

Old Mr.Quincey believed that.He just wasn’t sure how much of it he’d be able to witness.

“Has Mortimer seen you?” he suddenly asked.

Danika shook her head.

“Alfred brought him over during New Year’s, but other than that, we haven’t seen him.”

Eustace didn’t care if Mortimer died, and Danika wouldn’t care either. She didn’t check on him.

However, she guessed that he was most probably with Alfred now.

Old Mr.Quincey sighed, then said, “If you see him in the future, get him to return to Parrington. He shouldn’t stay by that kid’s side and affect his future.”

Although he refused to accept Alfred as part of his family, some things couldn’t be changed.

In Just A Few Months

As his father, Old Mr.Quincey knew what Mortimer was like very well.

If he stayed by Alfred’s side forever, he would ruin the young man’s life.

On top of that, Mortimer was his son.

No matter how unpleasant their shared history was, at this age, Old Mr.Quincey had let go of many things and no longer wished to care about all that.

“Do you want him to come back?”

Danika was surprised. She thought that Old Mr.Quincey still held a grudge against Mortimer.

He sighed, “He’s my son, after all. There’s nothing wrong in letting him take care of me.And with him under my watch, he won’t cause trouble for you.”

“Alright. We’ll tell him what you said once we’re back in Bardoff City.I won’t guarantee whether he’ll want to come back.”

Mortimer might actually refuse to return.

Old Mr.Quincey didn’t mind.

“Don’t worry.He’ll come.”

After all that they had been through, Mortimer was still the same.Old Mr.Quincey didn’t want to care about him anymore.

They talked in the living room while Eustace cut up the vegetables in the kitchen.

“You can rest, Mr.Eustace.Let the cooks handle it.”

Warren stood next to him, unsure of what to do.

The cooks had begun their preparations early for Eustace and Danika’s arrival.

The food was almost ready, but Eustace insisted on making one himself.

“It’s fine.I’ll just make one really quickly.”

Eustace wanted to let his grandfather have a taste of his cooking.

While he chopped, he asked Warren, “How is Grandpa holding up lately?”

“The doctor says it’s not looking good.”

At the mention of his health, Warren grew solemn.

“He exhausted himself when he was younger. No matter how much he rests now, he can’t recuperate.”

Eustace paused his movements. His eyes dimmed.

“How long does he have left?”

“That’s hard to tell. The doctor says that in the worst-case scenario, he has a few months left. And at most, he has three to five years left,” Warren replied honestly.

“If you’re free, you should come back often to see him.He says he doesn’t care, but he really wants you to come back.”

“Alright.” Eustace nodded.

Sadness surged in his heart.

“It must be hard taking care of him.”

“Don’t say that, Mr.Eustace.In my eyes, Mr.Quincey is my family.I’m happy to help.”

Warren had been in the household for a few decades now.He was already used to it.

Eustace said nothing else and began cooking.Soon, he took the dishes out of the kitchen.

The maids helped out as well.

“Grandpa, Danika, it’s time to eat,” Eustace said.

At the sound of his voice, they stopped talking.

Danika held Old Mr.Quincey as he got up from the couch and walked toward the dining table.

It was then that Danika realized how frail he truly was.

He couldn’t walk without teetering slightly, and if no one helped him, it would be hard for him to walk.

For some reason, she thought back to when she first met him.

Old Mr.Quincey had been full of life then, and there had been nothing wrong with his feet.

How long had it been since? Why was he so weak now? What she didn’t know was that Old Mr.Quincey had forced himself to push through.

It wasn’t that he was tired.

Eustace had only just inherited the Quinceys then.

How could Old Mr.Quincey back him up if he was weak? Later on, when he saw how strong Eustace had become and had Danika by his side, he felt at ease.

The moment he relaxed, his strength left him, and he grew weak.

Other Intentions

They ate around the dining table. It was a harmonious sight.

When Old Mr.Quincey heard they wanted to go to Orchid Village the next day, he suggested following them along.

Eustace didn’t really agree with that.

“You’d better not go, Grandpa. It’s too far.”

They had to drive for several hours, and Eustace was worried about his health.

Old Mr.Quincey knew what Eustace meant, but he was insistent.

“If I don’t go now, I might not be able to again.I need to pay my respects to my friend.”

Danika’s grandfather was his friend for many years. It was he who told him of Danika’s identity, and that was when they arranged for Eustace and Danika’s marriage.

When he died, Old Mr.Quincey had no means to attend the funeral when he died.

Now that he was at his end, he had to at least pay his respects.
