“It doesn’t matter. I want to protect you. But if it was you in my place, I hope you would protect yourself.” Eustace looked at her and didn’t feel sad because of Danika’s words.
Eustace would rather Danika love and protect herself more. He didn’t want her to do anything or make any sacrifices for him.
Danika’s eyes turned red, and she couldn’t help but curse, “You’re so immature!*
“Don’t cry. I can’t come over and wipe your tears now.” Eustace felt heartbroken. Although the lights in the ward were dim, he could still tell that Danika was crying.
Originally, Danika’s tears were only brewing. But upon hearing Eustace’s selfless words, they burst out uncontrollably.
“You jerk!” Danika cried and cursed at the same time.
Eustace was confused. Wasn’t he comforting her with his words? Why was she crying even louder now?
“Danika, I’m sorry. I…”
“You didn’t do anything wrong, so why are you apologizing?” Danika said angrily, feeling that he was being a fool. She wiped away her tears and didn’t continue crying. “I’m fine, I just think you’re so foolish.”
“You’re wrong, I’m not foolish,” Eustace retorted. He didn’t think he was foolish. On the contrary, he thought he was very smart. Fortunately, he’d protected Danika in time; otherwise, she would have been seriously injured now, and he would have been heartbroken to see that.
Now, he could take her place and suffer in her stead. Eustace didn’t think he was foolish at all.
Danika glanced at him, and their eyes met. They could both see the deep affection in each other’s eyes. It was just that they were unable to get out of bed now; otherwise, they would have held and kissed each other passionately.
Danika felt a little embarrassed, so she shifted her gaze and changed the topic. “The police said this was an accident. What do you think?” “It’s definitely not an accident. It was aimed at us.” As for whether it was aimed at him or Danika specifically, he wasn’t sure.
I’m Serious
Eustace and Danika had the same thought-they both didn’t think it was an accident.
“I guess great minds think alike. I’ve already asked Vincent to investigate this. We should have the results soon,” Danika said.
Eustace nodded with a smile. “Danika, you’re capable in your own right. Even if something really happens to me in the future, I believe you can handle everything well.”
“Eustace!” Danika’s tone suddenly changed after he said that. She looked coldly at Eustace with unprecedented seriousness. “You better not hold on to this idea. If you dare to have an accident again. I’ll…I’ll marry the person you hate the most!” she huffed, not really knowing how to threaten him.
Eustace was amused by her words, but because he laughed too hard, he pulled his wound. Pain shot through him; his back and forehead instantly became drenched with sweat. “Heh…Who do you think is the person I hate the most right now?”
As the lights were dim, Danika didn’t see the cold sweat on Eustace’s forehead. Instead, she pondered his question seriously.
“Alfred?” Danika wasn’t sure, but considering it carefully, he seemed to be the most likely person.
Eustace shook his head. “I used to hate him very much, but now, he’s not the person I hate the most.”
“Then, who do you hate the most?” Danika asked.
“Why? Do you really want to marry him?” Eustace smirked with his eyes trained on Danika.
Danika pursed her lips. “I’m just curious.”
Eustace smiled slightly. “To be honest, I think I hate Evan the most.”
“What? Why?” Danika didn’t expect it to be Evan. She hadn’t thought about him for a long time since the last phone call she made to him after leaving Monaerim. She hoped they would never meet again.
“Because he almost really made me lose you.” Eustace looked at Danika and enunciated word by word.
During the time when Evan appeared, Eustace panicked like never before.
At first, he was afraid that Danika really liked Evan. Later, he was afraid that Danika would take care of Evan for the rest of her life. When Evan took Danika away, he was almost sure that he would never be able to get her back.
Fortunately, none of those things actualized in the end.
They looked at each other, and Danika understood what Eustace meant. She smiled and said, “Since you hate him so much, you better protect yourself. Otherwise, if you dare to get into an accident again, I’ll go find him.”
“Danika,” Eustace called her name exasperatedly.
“Eustace, I’m serious, so you better not have an accident again,” Danika reminded him once more, her tone stern and unyielding.
Eustace believed her and nodded. “Okay, I’ll protect myself. We still have to be together for a lifetime, and I’m not willing to leave you.”
Danika’s cheeks turned red in an instant, and luckily, Eustace couldn’t see it. If not, Danika would have been even more embarrassed.
“Who wants to spend a lifetime with you? Dream on,” Danika snapped back and then lay down. “Go to sleep and rest well.”
“Sure.” Eustace didn’t say anything else, but he’d already made up his mind.
After being discharged from the hospital, he would propose. This incident made him realize how afraid he was of losing Danika. Since that was the case, he should tie her to himself and make her his as soon as possible.
Danika had no way of knowing Eustace’s thoughts. If she knew that Eustace was thinking about proposing at this time, she would probably not know how to react.
The two of them slowly fell asleep, and the hospital room fell into silence, waiting for dawn to arrive.
No Surprise
The next day, Danika woke up feeling much better. She could get out of bed on her own, though it still posed a little bit of a challenge to her. Across from her, Eustace fared worse as he even had trouble sitting up. Seeing this, she slowly got out of bed and went to Eustace’s bedside.
“Let me help you,” she offered.
“No need. Your injury isn’t fully healed yet. Let Vincent do it instead,” Eustace said with a wave of his hand. However, before he could finish, Danika had already helped him up.
“My injury wasn’t that severe, to begin with. I’ve recovered a lot in the past two days. There’s really nothing to worry about,’ Danika said.
Right then, Eustace was leaning against the headboard, looking helpless as he said, ‘I know you want to take care of me personally, but there’s no need to be so anxious. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future.”
Danika rolled her eyes at him and thought Eustace was quite the jokester. He had just recovered a bit, and he was already spouting nonsense. When Vincent knocked on the door and came in, Danika and Eustace were already lying on the same bed. For a moment, he scolded himself internally for barging in at the wrong time.
“Vincent,” Danika quickly called out to him as he turned to leave. “Were there any leads on the driver?”
She and Eustace were just chatting on the bed and hadn’t done anything inappropriate. If Vincent left right away, she thought he might get the wrong impression.
Vincent loosened his hand from the door handle and turned back to face the two of them.
“Yes, Miss Zellweger. I just found out that the driver is actually Anthony’s underling.”
As soon as he said that, Danika and Eustace exchanged a look, instantly understanding what had happened. She thought she had made herself clear before. If Anthony was smart, he wouldn’t cause trouble, but she didn’t expect him to be so bold and uncouth.
They didn’t say anything, so Vincent continued, “We couldn’t find anything before because the driver wasn’t considered a member of the Wardleys. He was brought in by Anthony himself from the outside and didn’t have much of a presence, so he wasn’t noticed at first.”
After Danika reminded him to investigate again, he did a thorough search and discovered the connection between the driver and Anthony, confirming that he was indeed acting under Anthony’s orders.
“I knew it. It wasn’t an accident.” Danika gritted her teeth; the result was just as she had expected.
Eustace’s expression was equally gloomy. He looked at Vincent and ordered,” The Wardleys have several projects on hand, right? Spread the word that whoever dares to work with them will be against me and the Quinceys.”
“And also the Zellwegers,’ Danika added.
Vincent nodded, understanding Eustace’s orders. This time, the Wardleys were likely to be expunged from Bardoff City.
Soon, Vincent turned around and left the ward, and Danika was once again pulled into Eustace’s embrace.
“Sorry, I put you in danger this time,’ he apologized, feeling guilty. Danika wouldn’t have been in danger if it weren’t for him. Eustace blamed himself immensely.
“What are you talking about? Anthony may not have targeted you solely,’ she reasoned. Although she had no dealings with Anthony, she felt that someone like him wouldn’t just let her go after their previous unpleasant conversation.
Eustace held her tightly. “Fortunately, you’re okay.’
“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. But as for you, don’t be so foolish in the future.” Danika pressed her lips together into a taut line. Although she was fine, if something happened to Eustace because of her, she felt that she would never be able to let it go. She didn’t want to see him in trouble either.
Eustace’s lips curled up into a smile as his mood lightened. ‘I’m not foolish. Protecting you is something I’ll always be willing to do, not to mention…I won your heart because of this. Now that I think about it, I’m the ultimate benefactor.”
He felt that Danika was obviously more concerned about him after the accident.
Boycotting the Wardleys
The boycott against the Wardleys by the Quinceys and Zellwegers began quickly. However, it wasn’t just these two families who were going up against the Wardleys. Soon, the Windsors and Watkins informed everyone, one after the other, that they had made the same decision as the Quinceys and Zellwegers. And so, the Wardleys were targeted by four of the Ten Elites at the same time.
At one point, those who had been working with the Wardleys canceled their contracts and agreements one after another because they did not dare to offend the other families. Besides, they believed the Wardleys were doomed this time. Working with a family that was about to be destroyed was a suicidal move that no one dared to make.
Anthony hadn’t expected Eustace to retaliate in such a way. To be precise, he hadn’t considered an alternative situation where Eustace would survive. He wasn’t afraid of Danika’s threats before, as he thought that as long as he killed Eustace, who would dare to oppose him by then? At that time, Eustace and Danika were in the same car. If the two of them died together, he would dominate the city!
But now, both of them were still alive, and it had been discovered that he was the mastermind. Anthony knew he’d screwed up royally this time. He tried to contact other families for help, but those families were not fools. How could they help the Wardleys at a time like this?
The Wardleys became the target of public criticism, and it seemed they were going bankrupt. At this time, other members of the Wardley family no longer expected Anthony to make the right decision. They’d started to sell their shares one after another, trying to cash out while they still could. They didn’t want the shares in their hands to become worthless later.
When Faye arrived at Wardley Inc, she found that everything was in chaos, and almost no one was working as they should. The entire office building was ridden with anxiety, and the news that the Wardleys were going bankrupt had spread like wildfire.
She took a deep breath and pushed open Anthony’s office door. “Anthony, what’s going on? Why did Eustace and Danika suddenly attack us?”
At that moment, Anthony was still dealing with official business, seemingly unaffected by external events. When he saw her, his eyes lit up, and he quickly pulled her over to sit beside him. “Faye, now that it’s life or death for the Wardleys, you must help me, okay?’
“Didn’t you say that we shouldn’t attack Eustace before? Why did you change your mind?” Faye was not a fool. If Anthony hadn’t suddenly acted, Eustace and Danika wouldn’t have come after them like this.
Regarding this, Anthony didn’t hide anything from her. “What’s so great about Eustace? It’s just that he was lucky this time! If he died, there would be nothing going on now.” He was just annoyed that his subordinates had failed to kill Eustace.
“Anthony, you promised-“
“Faye, don’t be silly. Do you think you would still have a chance with him if I didn’t make a move against him? You’ve seen how he treats Danika. Give up. You don’t stand any chance with him,” Anthony interrupted her and tried to make his sister come to her senses.
Faye’s expression froze, and she didn’t speak.
