Not intending to waste more time with her, Danika asked, “Is there anything else? If not, you can leave. There are still many patients waiting.”
“Danika, aren’t you worried about my return?” Faye couldn’t contain herself.
Danika glanced at her and sneered. “Where did you get the idea that I’d be worried?”
“Why wouldn’t you? In the past, my family was inferior to yours, so I couldn’t compete with you. But now, it’s different. I am Miss Wardley, and my status is not inferior to yours,” Faye felt that she could contend with Danika.
Speechless, she shrugged her shoulders and said indifferently, “Since you’re so confident, go ahead and give it a try.”
If Eustace chose Faye, Danika would just consider it a mistake on her part.
“Don’t worry. I will try. I hope you won’t end up crying miserably,” Faye snorted coldly and then stood up to leave.
Danika watched her leave and decided to forget about her. She believed Eustace could handle it, so she didn’t plan to waste her energy on it. She still had to keep an eye on Eric. She didn’t think he would give up so easily. He might already be planning his next move.
Danika wasn’t wrong. Eric was indeed planning his next move, but this time, he didn’t need many people. To be precise, he only needed himself.
Inside the room, Eric had not fully recovered yet, and Pete was standing by his bedside. “Father, are you alright?”
“Don’t worry, I can’t die,” Eric said, leaning against the headboard with some effort, looking at Pete. After a moment, he regained his composure and finally spoke, ‘Do you know why I called you here?”
Have You Decided?
Pete shook his head. He really didn’t know, but he felt uneasy inside, sensing it might not be good.
But the reality turned out to be different from what he had expected. Eric sighed and continued, “I will visit the Zellwegers again, but this time, there’s a good chance I won’t return. So, before I go, I need to explain a few things to you.”
Pete was stunned.
Eric ignored his reaction and continued, ‘Although I still have some doubts about your abilities, the Dafoe family will eventually be handed over to you. So, I plan to explain some family matters to you in these two days. I know you have been dissatisfied with me all these years, and I don’t expect you to understand me. But if I really cant come back, you must hold up the Dafoe family for me.”
Even if he died, Eric didn’t want the Dafoe family to end just like that.
Meanwhile, Pete was still confused, finding it hard to believe what he was hearing.
“To be honest with you, I have a few other children outside. But don’t worry, they won’t affect your position. If I don’t make it back, give them some money and let them live out their lives. Don’t be too ruthless. After all, they are still your siblings,” Eric continued.
That afternoon, he revealed many things-his secrets, the Dafoe family’s secrets. When Pete came out of Eric’s room, he still couldn’t fully comprehend what had happened.
Did he just entrust all the secrets to him? What was the meaning of this? Could he have known about his alliance with Danika and deliberately told him these things?
However, it didn’t seem like he was lying. Pete was at a loss and didn’t know if he should continue cooperating with Danika. He was well aware that if Eric visited the Zellwegers again, he would not be able to make it back. Perhaps the next time he saw him would be at the police station.
He hesitated.
But in the end, he made up his mind. After all these years, it was the first time he was deciding for himself. Since he had started, there was no reason to stop now. So, he called Danika and informed her that Eric hadn’t given up. He also mentioned the matter of Eric entrusting the Dafoe family to him.
After listening, Danika somewhat understood Pete’s hesitation. “Hey, you can still back out. After all, he doesn’t know about the things you’ve done. As long as you don’t say anything, you’re still a dutiful son in his eyes.”
Although it would be more difficult to secure a conviction without Pete’s testimony, it wasn’t entirely impossible. Eric had killed many people, so finding evidence wouldn’t be difficult.
“Since we’ve already started, there’s no reason for me to regret it,” Pete said.
Danika smiled. “Have you decided?”
“Yeah, let’s proceed according to plan.”
After hanging up the phone, Pete looked at Eric’s room and couldn’t help but feel a wave of emotions.
If Eric hadn’t called him to Bardoff City, he wouldn’t have been able to know his plan, which would give Eric a chance for success. However, he specifically called him from Bayside City to come here and revealed his plan to him. If it were leaked to Danika, Eric’s plan would fail.
Pete looked up at the sky.
“Mom, I’m finally going to avenge you. Eric will soon come to accompany you, and you will be happy then.”
It’s me who doesn’t want to meet you
The upcoming week was not peaceful for Danika at all. On the one hand, she was preparing for Eric’s visit to Zellweger Castle. On the other hand, Faye kept visiting her at the hospital every few days.
Danika was annoyed. Wasn’t Faye supposed to win Eustace over? Why was she coming to her instead? Could it be that she was hoping Danika would give up voluntarily? How naive of her.
Of course, that wasn’t what Faye had in mind. She came to find Danika not because she wasn’t going to find Eustace, but because Eustace refused to see her. She couldn’t even catch a glimpse of him, so how could she try to win him over?
Therefore, she could only choose the next best thing, which was to appear by Danika’s side. She knew that Eustace came to pick up Danika from work every day, and she could take the opportunity to see him.
“Dr. Zellweger,” Faye called as she entered the room. She was surprised to find Eustace in the consultation room and broke into a smile.
“Eustace, there you are.” Faye greeted him with a smile.
Eustace glanced at her indifferently and asked, “Did you pester her every day just to see me, as Danika said?”
Faye felt embarrassed. Although that was indeed the case, Danika shouldn’t have put it so bluntly.
Her silence displeased Danika. “Since you’re so eager to see Eustace, I invited him here today. If you have anything to say, say it quickly, as you might not have another opportunity.” She was truly tired of Faye coming to find her every day. Strangers might even think they had a good relationship.
Shocked, Faye’s jaw dropped, and it took her a while to close her mouth. She didn’t expect Danika to be so straightforward.
“Dr. Zellweger, you misunderstood me. I just wanted to be friends with you…” Faye said sadly, trying to garner Eustace’s sympathy. Unfortunately, it had no effect at all.
Eustace glanced at her and said, “Danika doesn’t want to be friends with you. Since you’re not looking for me, don’t appear in the hospital again.’
“Eustace, Danika is my doctor.” Faye was unhappy.
Meanwhile, Eustace was on the verge of losing his temper.
Danika held his hand and shook her head at Faye. Then she looked at Faye and said, “I’m fine with being your doctor, but being friends is out of the question. I don’t think we can be friends. Faye, you and I both know what your intentions are. Instead of denying it here, you should take the opportunity to say what you want to say to Eustace. You don’t know when you’ll have the chance to see him again.”
Danika genuinely meant it. She specifically invited Eustace to come over so that the two of them could resolve the matter, and she wouldn’t have to be bothered by Faye every day.
Faye’s face finally fell as she failed to keep the act. Gritting her teeth, she reluctantly nodded and admitted, “Yes, I came to find you because I wanted to see Eustace. It’s all your fault that Eustace doesn’t even want to see me. Can you say that it has nothing to do with you?”
Danika was speechless. What did it have to do with her? She never said that Eustace and Faye couldn’t meet.
Before she could speak, Eustace said, “It has nothing to do with her. It’s me who doesn’t want to meet you.”
“Why?” Faye asked immediately, unable to accept it.
“Why?” Eustace laughed. “Why should I see you? Are we close?”
“Eustace-” “I’ve told you not to call me that. We’re not close with each other,” Eustace cut her off, annoyed.
Taking Him for Granted
Time seemed to have stopped at that moment, but fortunately, Faye’s heart was strong enough to take the blow, so she wasn’t too affected by it. She tried to calm herself down and forced a smile while saying, “Eustace, I know you only treat me as your little sister, but it doesn’t matter. In my heart, you’ve always been my brother. Although we had some unpleasantness before, and I hurt Dr. Zellweger because of my immaturity, I have changed now and won’t do those things again.” She was sincere, her eyes slightly reddened.
She thought that Eustace would respond to her sincere words. However, when she looked at him, she realized that Eustace’s gaze was never on her. But on Danika the whole time. She wasn’t even sure if Eustace had heard her words.
This time, Faye really felt like crying, but Eustace didn’t give her the chance to do so.
“Are you done talking?” Eustace asked her.
Faye was stunned but nodded her head.
“In that case, let me tell you clearly that I used to treat you as my little sister, but now I’m not interested in you, nor do I want to treat you as my sister. I think it’s better for us to be strangers,” Eustace said, his tone frosty; he didn’t care about Faye’s feelings at all.
Faye was very hurt, and tears streamed down her face.
“Also, don’t come looking for Danika again in the future. If I find out you’re at it again, I won’t let you or the Wardleys off the hook,’ Eustace warned.
He didn’t want Danika to misunderstand him in the first place, but Faye kept challenging his boundaries. Did she take him for a pushover? Did she think he wouldn’t rebuke her?
Now, Faye didn’t even dare to cry.
Danika paid no mind to what they were talking about and was busy minding her own business. was still a little happy in her heart. It felt pretty good to be favored by someone.
Faye left—she could do nothing else but leave in this situation.
After she left, Eustace finally hugged Danika. “I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”
“There’s nothing we can do about this. I chose a man with a lot of admirers. ” Danika sighed, feeling helpless about the situation.
Eustace was outstanding both in appearance and ability. He was no doubt one of the best. Naturally, many women were attracted to him. Even so, Danika didn’t feel worried at all. She didn’t feel inferior; besides, if other women easily tempted Eustace, he wouldn’t be worth her affection.
Reaching out to lightly flick on Danika’s forehead, Eustace grumbled, “You talk as if you didn’t have any admirers. I wonder who was taken away by someone else before and almost couldn’t return.”
Danika pursed her lips, thinking it would be better not to speak.
Eustace looked at his watch and asked, “It’s time to get off work. What do you want to eat tonight?”
“You decide. I’m fine with anything.” Danika thought it was a headache to think about what to eat every day.
“How about we go for some Clusian cuisine?” Eustace didn’t cook every day, partly because he was too lazy, and partly because even if he cooked delicious food, he would tire of eating his own cooking very quickly should he do it every day.
Danika thought about it and nodded. “Sure.”
Standing up as she spoke, Danika took off her white coat. She changed into her own clothes and walked out of the hospital with Eustace.
They thought Faye had already left, but they didn’t expect her to still be at the entrance of the hospital.
