“Really.” Danika nodded. There were no lies spoken. Although she had hired him with the intention of using him, that was a long time ago. She had already completely trusted him. She would not have entrusted the company to him otherwise.
Alfred smiled when he saw her nod. He felt better at once. ‘Well, it seems that my efforts have not been wasted.”
“Of course not. You have already earned my respect.” Danika no longer talked about this. She thought of Mortimer and said, “Is your father…still in the hospital?’
“Yeah.” Alfred’s face was expressionless.
“I thought that you would be on good terms with him.” After all, Mortimer had abandoned Eustace and his mother for Alfred and his mother. Alfred had experienced the love that Eustace had not. They should be on good terms.
Now, it seemed that wasn’t the case.
Alfred ate his food, saying nonchalantly, “I know what you’re thinking, but the truth is that he never really loved my mother all those years they were together. They fought a lot, and after each fight, he would play the victim and say he had given up a lot for us.
He never really loved me. At most, I saw him every day, but I really preferred not to. At least. I’d be free to think of a father in whatever manner I liked.”
He and Eustace felt differently about Mortimer. Alfred did not hate him. He was merely indifferent.
That was the first time Danika heard him say so much about Mortimer. She was feeling a mixture of emotions. She suddenly felt that whatever Mortimer was experiencing right now was karma. He had wronged too many people. Perhaps this was what he deserved.
They did not talk about it anymore. At this moment, Jade came to the cafeteria to eat as well.
She and Alfred were not alike. She didn’t come there often, preferring to cook at home.
“Danika? Why didn’t you tell me that you were coming?” Jade came over with her plate of food, complaining.
Why Don’t You Give Him a Go?
Danika was happy to see Jade. They hadn’t seen each other in a while. “I thought you weren’t in.’
Jade was busy with La Vie Jeen Rose. Danika knew this, which was why she hadn’t gone to see her. However, Jade appeared to be in a good mood. Things were probably going well. “I take it that things are going well?”
“Of course. What could go wrong with me in charge?” Jade smiled. She was capable, and Danika was backing her up. Everyone knew that Danika was the future heir of the Zellwegers. Based on that fact alone, no one dared to trouble Jade.
Danika gave her a thumbs up. “We know you’re good.”
Alfred saw that they were beginning to chat, and he finished his food quickly. “You girls can talk. I’m going back to the office to handle some stuff.”
“Don’t tire yourself out,” Danika said. If Alfred were to break down, she would be unable to replace him.
Although he knew why Danika was so concerned, Alfred still felt happy.” Don’t worry. I won’t let you down.”
After that, he got up to leave. Only Jade and Danika were left.
“I used to be wary of Alfred because I thought he had bad intentions. But after getting to know him, I think he’s alright.” Jade watched him leave, smiling.
Danika nodded. She thought so, too. Suddenly, Jade looked at her. “You’re single, too. Why don’t you give him a go? I think you might be interested in him.”
Mortimer wasn’t much of a character, but he had good looks. Both of his sons were very handsome. Alfred could not compare to Eustace, but he was still fine. At least, to Jade, he was incredibly handsome.
Danika was speechless. She wasn’t expecting Jade to say that. “Why don’t you worry about yourself instead? I hear Max has moved his entire company to Bardoff City for you.”
“What do you mean for me? They’re expanding their company for their own benefit.” Jade didn’t want to be responsible for something so huge.
Danika smiled, placing one hand under her chin. “Oh, really? Are you sure that it has nothing to do with you?”
It had been a long time since she last saw Max, but that didn’t mean she didn’t know of the Pearsons moving to Bardoff City.
However, Max was no longer as carefree as he was in Parrington. Bardoff was a competitive place. It wasn’t easy to survive.
“Oh, let’s not talk about him. I’m getting irritated just thinking of him.” Jade pursed her lips. She didn’t even have an appetite anymore.
Danika grew amused. She batted her eyes at Jade. “Why? Did you fight?”
“What do you mean fight? We aren’t even together.” Jade glared at Danika. Now it was Danika’s turn to be surprised. ‘You mean he hasn’t even successfully pursued you after all this time?”
She thought that they would at least be together.
“I’m not in the mood to think about all this. I just want to make the brand successful.” Jade ate unhappily.
Although she didn’t say it out loud, Danika understood her thoughts. “You wish to surpass your ex- husband, don’t you? You want to prove that you’re capable before considering a relationship.”
After a moment, Jade nodded, admitting it.
“You don’t have to do that, Jade. He’s your ex-husband. He has nothing to do with you. Why are you stopping yourself from being happy because of him?” Danika couldn’t help giving Jade advice.
Being Unfair to Him
Jade sighed. She put down her utensils and said, “I know what you mean, but I just can’t let it go. I wouldn’t be in the mood to be in a relationship unless I surpassed him.”
Whenever she thought of his betrayal, a surge of anger would wash over Jade. She had to succeed. That was the only way she would let things go.
Seeing how determined she was, Danika couldn’t say much else. “But this would be unfair to Max.”
“I know. That’s why I’ve never led him on. In fact, I want him to give up.” Jade knew that she shouldn’t be comparing herself to her ex-husband.
Anyone would think that she couldn’t let him go. However, she didn’t care about that as much as proving herself.
Danika sighed. “Love is so complicated.”
“Oh, how old are you? Are you old enough to be saying stuff like that? Aren’t you afraid of being laughed at?” Jade teased.
Danika shook her head. “Don’t think I’m inexperienced just because I’m young, Jade. I’m a divorcee, too.”
Although she and Eustace hadn’t betrayed each other, Danika felt her situation was much more complicated.
“What do you mean, divorce? You’re still a virgin.” Jade thought it was good of Eustace for not taking advantage of Danika in their two years of marriage.
They talked and laughed. Once they walked out of the cafeteria, Jade reminded Danika to get herself a boyfriend. That way, she wouldn’t be so bored. However, Danika didn’t feel the same. Most importantly, she didn’t think she was bored at all.
She had too many things to handle. She had no time for love.
On the way back to Zellweger Castle, Danika walked instead of hailing a cab.
She would soon return to the busy life of working in a hospital. She wouldn’t have slow moments like that anymore.
However, Bardoff Hospital was much more orderly than Parrington Hospital. She wouldn’t be the only surgeon in the hospital, either. There were many surgeons in
Bardoff Hospital, and they were all incredible. She wouldn’t be as busy as she had been in Parrington.
She walked home with her thoughts accompanying her.
Quickly, she realized that something was off. There was a car behind her. She didn’t look back. Instead, she took her phone out and turned the camera to selfie mode, pretending to scroll through her phone. She took a picture of the car’s license plate.
The car stopped following her. Danika began to wonder if she was being too cautious.
However, just in case, she sent out the license plate number for someone to investigate.
In the car, Yvonne Dickman stared at Danika’s figure until she disappeared. Then, she turned toward the woman sitting in the passenger seat. “There. I’ve already located her for you. You know what to do.”
Alicia Flynn stared after Danika. The hatred in her eyes was unmistakable. “I will avenge my brother without you needing to remind me.”
She had been in the hospital all this while. Now that she was out, the first thing to do would be to take revenge on Danika. However, her powers were limited. She had to rely on Yvonne to find Danika’s whereabouts.
Even though Yvonne was willing to help her, Alicia was no fool. She knew that Yvonne wanted to use her to go against Danika. However, Alicia didn’t mind it. She wanted to avenge her brother, after all. It didn’t matter to her whether Yvonne used her.
“You are no match for her. Go and get your brother’s mentor. Let him avenge your brother.” Yvonne was afraid of Alicia running out to confront Danika. That would be equivalent to sending her to her death
I Think He Was Deceived
“I don’t need you to remind me. I know.” Although Yvonne was helping her, Alicia felt indifferent toward her. If Yvonne hadn’t employed her brother to be her bodyguard, he wouldn’t have ended that way.
Yvonne didn’t care about her bad attitude. In her eyes, she didn’t have to care as long as they could go against Danika.
Danika had long forgotten Jonathan Flynn. She’d also forgotten about his sister, much less anticipate her coming to look for her.
At night, Danika received a call from her senior, who was a psychologist.
“How is the psychologist I recommended before?” He had called to ask specifically about that. If the treatment wasn’t going well, he planned to recommend another one to Danika.
Danika suddenly remembered the matter and asked, “I never got to know her name. Who is she?”
Eustace said that her treatment was effective, but Danika felt that there was something off about him. She wanted to find out for herself.
“Her name is Blake Watkins. She’s a real beauty.” Her senior chuckled on the other end. However, Danika was stunned.
Blake Watkins? Wasn’t she the daughter of the Watkins family? So, Eustace’s psychologist had stayed by his side, and now they were together.
Things grew fishier the more she thought about it. Danika’s heart was troubled even more now that she learned that Blake was Eustace’s psychologist.
After hanging up, Danika prepared to call Eustace. However, she hesitated just as she was about to press the dial button.
In the end, she called Vincent.
“Miss Danika?” Vincent had already come to Bardoff City and was working in Quincey Group as usual. Though to be precise, it was Wagner Group now.
Eustace hadn’t brought him to the Quincey family with him. Perhaps he hadn’t deemed it necessary. Maybe it wasn’t the time yet.
“Vincent, I’d like you to find something out for me.” Then, Danika asked him to tell her all about what happened after Eustace returned, especially the oddities about him.
