After he was done venting his dissatisfaction, they would still be husband and wife.
“Okay, I’ll take care of this matter for you.”
Rowena agreed, thinking it would be best for them to get married as soon as possible, given the current situation.
On the one hand, things might change if they were delayed; on the other hand, she believed James would change his mind after officially marrying Jolene and not torture her as he did now.
After mother and daughter agreed on what to do, Jolene left Zellweger Castle. She told herself that no matter the challenges, she had to endure them.
A Decision
After Jolene and James got engaged, Graham and James no longer needed to keep their interactions secret or discreet.
There were often rumors of a collaboration between the two families, but nothing concrete had materialized from it yet, much to the curiosity of the people in Bardoff City.
They were sure the two families were working together but didn’t know what they were up to.
Danika didn’t bother herself with these matters as she couldn’t intervene with them dealing with the Glasses.
She continued to work as a junior employee in the sales department every day.
Perhaps because Jolene and James were engaged, everyone assumed that Danika would be the obvious choice to inherit the Zellweger family business.
Hence, people in the company were more polite to her, and hardly anyone dared to oppose her.
Even when she went out to negotiate with clients, her success rate was almost ninety percent, making her the top performer in the entire department in no time.
Danika felt somewhat helpless about this, knowing it would be unfair to the other employees if she continued to stay in the department.
The commission they could receive would decrease as she took up all the sales.
After much hesitation, she finally made a decision. She went to Graham’s office.
He’d just finished talking with James.
Seeing her arrive, he smiled and beckoned for her to come over.
“Danika, come and sit here.”
Danika walked over and looked at James.
“Are you discussing your plans?”
“We’re done,” James replied.
Danika nodded, curious about the progress.
“How’s it going with the Glasses?”
The plan had been in progress for some time now, and with the contract that the Glasses had signed with her before, it should have already taken effect, but she hadn’t heard any news yet.
“The Glasses have lost several projects recently in succession, and I guess they will soon realize it’s me targeting them,” Graham said with confidence, a slight smile on his lips.
Danika raised an eyebrow.
“Then you should be careful.Who knows what the Glasses might do when they go crazy.”
“Don’t worry. If they dare to make a move, they’ll be digging their own grave.”
Graham wasn’t worried about it at all.
If the Glasses really took action, they would be doing themselves in and giving Graham more hold over them.
Upon hearing him, Danika didn’t ask further.
Graham knew much more about business matters than her.
Since he said it wasn’t a problem, she didn’t need to worry about it.
James noticed that she seemed to have something to say to Graham, so he announced, “I still have some work back at the company, so I’ll take my leave first.”
“Be careful with the Glasses. If they can trace it back to me, they can find you, too,” Graham cautioned.
James nodded, but his eyes were filled with disdain, clearly not taking it to heart.
As he got up and walked past Danika, he couldn’t help but ask, “How about having lunch together at noon?”
Danika was taken aback, as they hadn’t had a meal together since the incident with Jolene.
It was unexpected for James to invite her for a meal now, so she was slightly surprised.
“No matter what, you’re still my friend. We shouldn’t let others affect our relationship.”
James smiled with the same expression he’d always had in his eyes when he looked at her.
Danika smiled back and nodded.
“Okay, James.Wait for me downstairs.I’ll come to find you after I finish talking with my father.”
She had been worried that James would distance himself from her because of Jolene.
But now she knew her worries were unnecessary and was naturally in a better mood.
James agreed and quickly left the office.Danika withdrew her gaze and looked at Graham, only to realize his gaze was somewhat cold.
I Trust Your Judgment
“What’s wrong?” Danika asked, puzzled.
Graham retracted his gaze and looked at her.
“James is a good person, but he is engaged to Jolene.I don’t want you having anything to do with him.” He thought favorably of James, and he still did.
But this didn’t mean that he could tolerate him being close to both of his daughters, especially Danika.
Danika was stunned. She instantly understood what Graham meant and was speechless.
“You’re overthinking things. He’s my senior. He’s just like family to me.Can’t I have a meal with family?”
“I know you don’t mean it that way, Danika, but does James feel the same way? Can you guarantee that people will keep their mouths shut?”
Graham was grim.He was truly trying to act in Danika’s best interests.
Danika was exasperated.
She looked at her father, saying, “I don’t care what people think of me as long as I have a clear conscience.”Seeing that he was unable to convince Danika, Graham shook his head.
“Just don’t grow too close with him.Forget the outsiders. What would Jolene think?”
“Why should I be concerned about what she thinks?” Danika scoffed.
Jolene would come to bother her regardless and blame every single inconvenience on her.
Thus, whether Danika had lunch with James wouldn’t make a difference.
Graham had no idea how to respond. He was silent for a while before sighing, then saying, “Forget it.We’ll drop it.What did you come here for?”
Normally, Danika wouldn’t come to see him in the company unless she had a reason.
Graham knew this very well.
“I came here to talk about my resignation,” Danika said, not beating around the bush.
Graham wasn’t surprised.
“That’s alright. There’s no point in you staying on in the sales He had assigned her to the sales department in order to train her, but it seemed pointless now. Danika was much more capable than he had thought, so the training was unnecessary.
“I will assign you as my assistant so that you will be introduced to the heart of the system. This way, you’ll inherit the company sooner,” Graham suggested.
But Danika frowned, upset.
“Didn’t we agree on letting trustworthy and capable people take over the company?”
“That’s true, but you can’t be completely clueless about how things work.” Graham was amused.
Danika didn’t seem to want to understand how the company worked at all, but that wouldn’t cut it.
There was no guarantee that the people they got to take over the company would be dependable forever.
What if someone betrayed them? What if Danika was manipulated without her knowing? Danika waved her hand nonchalantly.
“I trust your judgment.” Graham was speechless.
He didn’t trust his judgment, but here Danika was, saying that she did.He was at a loss for what to say.
“Well, since you don’t want to inherit the company, I won’t force you to.However, I hope you’d find a good husband to whom I can entrust the company.”
Graham brought up his request. He thought that this was the best solution. If Danika could pick a husband from the pool of suitors he had compiled, everything would be perfect. He placed the documents of the eligible bachelors on the table.
