Paul felt inexplicably annoyed, sensing her seething anger directed at him.
If Stephanie hadn’t tried to escape again and again, would he have to keep pursuing her? His words made Stephanie’s blood boil.
“What have I done to offend you? Tell me!”
She was very emotional as she shot up from her chair.
“Am I not miserable enough now? I’ve left my hometown, yet you’re still chasing me.Are you trying to drive me to death?”
Paul had never seen Stephanie so out of control, and his heart was twisted with pain.
“I never intended to do that.”
“Oh, really? Then what do you want now?”
The moment Paul appeared, Stephanie felt like she couldn’t control herself. She thought she was sick because just laying her eyes on him was enough to trigger her stress response.
Paul pursed his lips and stayed silent for a while before speaking up again, “I just came to say hello and ask you how you’ve been.”
His tone was much gentler now.He wasn’t as overbearing as before, but Stephanie didn’t relax just because of that.
“I was doing well.Everything was going great before I saw you,” she replied.
Although she sometimes missed him at night, more often than not, she enjoyed the days without him.
“Do you just hate me so much?”
Paul didn’t understand. She’d said she loved him before, so how could things change so quickly? Stephanie found his words ridiculous. She slowly sat back in her seat and tried to control her emotions.
“Shouldn’t I hate you? If it weren’t for you, my parents and I wouldn’t have had to leave the place we’ve lived in since I was a child.Don’t you feel even a hint of guilt?”
Before Paul could reply, Stephanie laughed at herself and went on, “I’m so stupid. How could someone like you feel guilty? In your mind, you probably think I don’t know what’s good for me.”
You’ll Never Get Away From Me
Paul didn’t say anything. He had really thought that way before showing up.He felt he’d treated Stephanie well enough. He could give her anything she wanted as long as she didn’t leave.
But she was never satisfied and always thought about leaving.
Of course, he didn’t like that.
However, now that he saw Stephanie getting upset and losing control of her emotions because of him, Paul realized that he might have affected her adversely.
Paul asked tentatively, “What if…I mean, if I’m willing to marry you, would you—“
“No!”
Stephanie interrupted him before he could finish speaking.
Paul’s expression became as dark as thunderclouds, and he exuded a terrifying aura.
“What you cared about previously was that I wouldn’t marry you and give you a legitimate status, right? Now that I’m willing to, why are you refusing me?”
“Who do you think you are? Do you think everyone will wait for you right where they are and beg for you to return as long as you make a slight change? “Stephanie laughed, but her words were cold and sharp.Stephanie wouldn’t have been so angry if Paul had been willing to work toward this from the beginning, even if they couldn’t make their relationship public. However, he did none of that in the beginning. He only said that he wouldn’t make their relationship public and wouldn’t marry her because he thought she wasn’t good enough for him.
Now that Stephanie had gotten away from him, his possessiveness began to take over, and he wanted her back.
Who was he kidding? Stephanie wasn’t someone who would be at his beck and call.
As her words were too harsh, Paul got so angry that he forgot his initial intention of working out a compromise with her.
“You think too highly of yourself.Do you think you can escape from me just because you’re under Danika’s protection?”
If Paul wanted someone, no one could stop him—not even the Ten Elites would make him back down.
As soon as he said that, Stephanie knew he was going to make a move on her again. Her expression became gloomy instantly.
“Paul, why do you have to be like this? Can’t we just part ways nicely?”
“No! It’s up to me whether we part ways or not.”
He stared at Stephanie brazenly.
“You just have to make things difficult, huh?”
Stephanie didn’t want to back down from him anymore. She had seen through this vile man.
Even if she relented today, he wouldn’t let her go.
In that case, there was no need to compromise. She stood up, her eyes cold as she looked at Paul.
There wasn’t a hint of love left in them as she glared daggers at him.
“In that case, T’ll play with you till the end.”
With that, Stephanie left, and Paul didn’t go after her.He sat in his seat, sipping tea leisurely, looking at ease.
But he soon burst into a rage and flipped over the plates and cutlery on the table.
He stared in the direction Stephanie had left, his gaze dark and sinister.
“You’ll never get away from me, not in this life.”
On Sunday, James and Jolene’s engagement banquet was held.
Both the Zellwegers and the Windsors were among the Ten Elites of Bardoff City, so a marriage between these two prominent families naturally attracted countless people.
It was a grand and lavish scene that hadn’t been seen in Bardoff City for many years.
At the entrance of the Bardoff International Hotel, the Zellwegers and the Windsors each stood on either side to welcome the guests.
Though people kept coming over to Graham to congratulate him, deep inside, he felt an array of emotions that he couldn’t quite put into words.
He looked at James, who was standing across from him.
From the beginning of the banquet until then, he remained distant and unfriendly, his attitude toward Graham a far cry from before.
Although they didn’t intend to cancel their collaboration, Graham knew in his heart that after it ended, their relationship might become just as strained as the relationship between the Zellwegers and Glasses.
Graham had no one to blame but himself because it was his own selfishness that led to this.
You’ve Gotten Gutsy
Looking at the Zellweger family side, Graham noticed that Jolene was probably the happiest. She was in a red dress and stood amicably at the door, greeting guests with a much better attitude than usual.
Graham thought that he’d done everything he could for this daughter.
Danika came with Stephanie, but she didn’t stand with the Zellwegers to greet guests like Graham and the others.
Instead, she attended the banquet like a guest.
“James.” Danika walked over to greet James. She could see that he was upset.
Upon hearing her voice, James’ finally snapped out of his dazed condition and focused his eyes on her.
“Danika, you’re here.” Danika nodded.
Seeing James in such a state, she was significantly affected. She wanted to comfort him but knew it wouldn’t help at this time and would only upset him kore.
“Go in and have a seat,” James said, leading Danika into the banquet hall.
Jolene was unhappy upon seeing that. She quickly walked over and said, “Danika, why did you arrive so late?”
Danika looked at her coldly and unsmilingly.
“James, I’ll take my sister inside.”
Jolene reached to grab Danika’s hand to steer her away from James.
James looked at her and sneered apathetically.
“As you wish.”
Perhaps Jolene thought that marrying him was a good thing right now.
After the engagement, James silently swore that he would make her wish she was dead.
Danika walked into the banquet hall, trailing behind Jolene.
“James and I are getting engaged today. If you dare to cause any trouble, I won’t let you off the hook, and neither will Dad,” Jolene warned her as they made their way to their seats.
Danika gave her a sideways glance.
“What’re you afraid of? Could it be that you came to realize you can’t hold on to things that are stolen? Are you worried that James will leave you anytime?”
“I’m not afraid of anything!”
Jolene retorted in a headstrong manner.
