The person who passed her looked at her as if she were crazy.

She was just a passerby. She was paranoid.

Audrey was a little relieved. She put the pepper spray back in her purse.

She started walking again. But after taking a few steps, she heard someone call out to her from behind. “Audrey…”

Audrey’s heart skipped a beat and she shivered unconsciously. She had the impulse to run away, but was hugged tightly from behind.

Henley’s voice sounded soft and elegant. “Audrey, I don’t want to hurt you.

Get in the car, okay?”

As soft as his voice was, Audrey was still startled. His eyes caught sight of a nearby security office. She screamed at the top of her lungs, “He….”

His voice stopped suddenly because he felt a needle press against his waist.

Then Henley said softly, “If you run away, I’m afraid you won’t be able to keep your son.”

Her child? Did Henley know she was pregnant? Audrey asked in a trembling voice, “What do you want from me?”

“Nothing. I just want to talk to you,” Henley replied.

“No, I don’t want to,” Audrey refused in horror.

The corners of Henley’s lips twitched slightly. “Why? Audrey, I won’t hurt you.”

Audrey had no choice. She was forced to get into Henley’s car. She dared not confront him directly, fearing he would hurt her son.

Henley was in the driver’s seat. Suddenly, he leaned over. Audrey was so startled that he covered his chest and asked vigilantly, “What do you want to do?”

“Buckle up,” Henley explained gently. He reached out to buckle her belt tenderly.

After buckling it, he sat up straight, started the car, stepped on the accelerator and drove forward.

Audrey looked out the window at the dark night and asked nervously, “Where are you taking me?”

“Wait and see for yourself. We’ll be there soon. If you’re tired, you can rest first,” Henley replied mysteriously.

But Audrey dared not sleep, much less close her eyes. She forced herself to stay awake, watching the outside as the car sped through the night.

She noticed that they were slowly leaving the populated area and the surroundings were becoming increasingly desolate. They seemed to be entering the suburbs.

Both sides of the road were completely dark and there were no signs of living creatures in the vicinity.

Audrey noticed that the road was becoming increasingly bumpy. She felt so uncomfortable that she felt like throwing up.

Her face paled. When she could contain herself no longer, she pleaded, “Henley, can you stop the car? I feel sick.

But Henley didn’t seem to hear Audrey. He didn’t even look at her. He just kept driving with his eyes fixed on the road.

After a while, the car finally stopped. They were in a dark and dilapidated area.

Audrey didn’t give it another thought. He rushed out of the car, ran some more and threw up.

Henley approached Audrey and handed her a bottle of water. But she didn’t take it. She dared not drink anything he gave her.

In an instant, Henley’s face became sullen and his eyes turned cold.

He pulled Audrey to the side of the house and asked, “Audrey, do you remember this place?”

Audrey shook his head. He really didn’t remember the place.

A trace of sadness shone in Henley’s eyes. He reminded her, “You once gave candy to a kid here. You even talked to him-don’t you remember?”

Audrey looked at him with confusion on her face.

She explained, “Actually, I don’t remember everything about my childhood.

When I was twelve, I had an accident and hit my head. Because of that, she had forgotten a lot of things, especially her childhood memories.

“Did you lose your memory?” asked Henley. The usual sly smile disappeared from his face.

Henley suffered mistreatment and abuse from his crazy mother since birth. She blamed him for her failure to become the man’s legitimate wife.

She cursed him for being too late. To her, he was destined to be a shameful, illegitimate son forever.

When she could no longer bear the repression of that family, she fled to the countryside with him. She began to destroy herself, abusing drugs and alcohol. Then she would always take her anger out on him, beating him with a stick and starving him for days.

Finally, the day came when he acquired the ability to defend himself against her.

He even watched her die without a single emotion in his heart.

He thought he would live in darkness for the rest of his life.

But one day, Henley met Audrey.

She was the girl who gave him candy in the darkest moment of his life.

It was her most unforgettable memory. But she couldn’t remember it.

Audrey looked at Henley’s ever-changing expression. He asked tentatively, “That boy was you? Y… And you thought that girl was me?”

From the beginning, she always felt that Henley didn’t really love her. His particular obsession with her had to have some special reasons.

Henley corrected her, “No, I don’t just think it’s you. I’m sure it’s you.”

He was becoming more and more certain of Audrey’s identity. Aside from the pendant Audrey wore, her scent and eyes resembled those of the girl in his memories.

Audrey didn’t dare refute Henley. Instead, she said, “If we’ve been friends since we were little girls, then you shouldn’t hurt me, should you?”

The pale moonlight spilled over Henley’s handsome face, making him look kind and calm. He stared at her, and his brows furrowed slightly. “Audrey, why do you think I’ll hurt you? Didn’t I promise you I wouldn’t hurt you?”

“Then… Can you send me home?” Audrey asked tentatively.

“Of course, I’ll take you home,” Henley agreed softly.

Audrey was so nervous that she didn’t have time to make out the meaning of his words.

He obediently returned to the car and buckled his seat belt.

A smile appeared on Henley’s face as he watched her.

He leaned toward her, adopting an intimate posture. He fixed his eyes on her beautiful rosy lips and said affectionately, “Audrey, I like it when you’re good.”

Henley was giving Audrey goose bumps.

She hadn’t expected him to lean too close to her. His breathing became ragged and his thin lips almost brushed hers.

Audrey became even more alert. He instinctively stepped back. Not wanting to provoke Henley, she pretended to be coy and said, “Let’s go…. Start the car first.”

Henley looked at her flushed face, feeling warm in his heart. He really liked it when she blushed. He smiled contentedly and started the car.

When the car got back on the road, Audrey couldn’t help a sigh of relief.

But the sense of relief didn’t last long. Immediately, he noticed that the direction in which they were headed was again becoming increasingly desolate. Audrey had the feeling that they were moving away from Ardlens.

“Henley, this isn’t the way back, are you having trouble remembering the right way?” commented Audrey.

“No,” Henley replied, looking ahead with a smile. “This road is a shortcut that goes to your house.”

Audrey was speechless.

Finally, he realized he was talking about taking her home, not sending her home.

“So where are we going?”

Audrey did his best to remain calm. But her trembling voice betrayed her “Melver,” Henley replied with a smile.

Audrey’s face paled instantly upon hearing this.

In utter disbelief, Audrey gasped “Henley, have you lost your damn mind?”.

With a serene smile, Henley replied, “Audrey, I want you by my side all the time. I’m not looking for anything else here, just you.”

“No!” cried Audrey, his voice tinged with urgency. “Henley, I’m married!”

These words subtly altered Henley’s normally serene expression.

A slight twitch crossed his handsome face as he replied, “Audrey, your previous marriage is of no concern to me.”
