Cornell’s stoic expression did not change and he replied, “It’s okay.”
Katie gently placed the lunch box on the table, arranging the plates one by one with a determined look on her face.
“I have a mission today. Luciana said you tend to forget to eat when work takes over. So here I am, assigned to make sure you finish all your food.”
Cornell massaged his forehead, a hint of irritation in his voice. “Leave this for now.”
But Katie didn’t back down. “No way! You need to take a break and eat them. When you’ve eaten them all, my mission will be accomplished.”
Throwing her an impatient look, Cornell asked, “Don’t you have anything else to do lately?”
Katie had become a frequent visitor to his company in recent days.
A slight blush graced Katie’s cheeks under Cornell’s gaze. She playfully stuck her tongue out at him and replied, “Come on. How can you be so heartless? I brought you food out of pure kindness, and now you’re scolding me?”
Cornell remained indifferent as he said, “I don’t need to. Can’t you understand what my mother is trying to do?”
Katie blinked and feigned innocence. “What do you mean?”
“She’s trying to pair you with me.”
A heartbeat leapt in Katie’s heart and she dared to ask, “What do you think about that, then?”
“Obviously I disagree.”
It was the answer Katie had expected. Katie sighed and asked in a self-deprecating tone, “Am I that bad in your eyes?”.
Cornell replied just as nonchalantly, “That’s not the point. I already have someone in my heart.”
Katie bit her lip and asked, “You mean your ex-wife, don’t you?”
Cornell preferred not to answer, feeling that it wasn’t the right time to reveal it publicly. Besides, he feared that Alexis would not easily give up her scheming.
Undeterred, Katie continued, “I don’t think she cares for you, Cornell.”
These words acted as a sharp reminder, once again stirring the thorns at the bottom of Cornell’s heart.
Cornell hadn’t expected a stranger like Katie to notice Audrey’s lack of concern for him. Even in the eyes of others, it was obvious.
Seeing that Cornell was silent, Katie said nothing more and took the opportunity to regroup her thoughts before speaking again.
With a reassuring smile, Katie suggested, “Since it’s Luciana’s idea, why don’t we play along.”
Cornell looked at her in confusion upon hearing that.
Katie explained, “Even if I’m not around, Luciana will find someone for you.
Why not use me as an excuse? It doesn’t bother me at all.”
Cornell couldn’t help but frown. He disliked this idea.
Undeterred, Katie persuaded him, “There’s nothing to worry about. I have no feelings for you, and I don’t feel like going on any blind dates set by my family. It could be a mutually beneficial arrangement if we pretend to be a couple. It’s a win-win strategy.”
Cornell neither consented nor objected.
Without waiting for Cornell to express his opinion, Katie continued, “Then it’s settled. We don’t need to broadcast it to the world. Let’s just inform our families that we are in a relationship. It’s as simple as that.”
With that statement, she picked up the lunch box. “I’ll eat this for you.
After that, my mission will be accomplished.”
Once outside the office, Katie’s expression changed, her innocent smile instantly gone.
The happiest time of her life was when Cornell considered her one of his friends. They were very close then.
But as soon as Cornell discovered she was a girl, he immediately distanced himself from her.
Heartbroken, she went abroad. However, when she returned, she could not take her eyes off him.
The need to be with Cornell became more and more intense. She developed an obsession that consumed her.
But Katie did a great job of hiding it.
She wouldn’t take a step unless she was sure of the outcome.
Matteo knocked on the door as Katie left.
Upon entering, Matteo sensed that Cornell’s mood had declined.
Moments earlier, when Cornell had just returned, Matteo had said that Cornell and Audrey were the perfect couple after seeing the gleaming marriage certificate.
Cornell had praised Matteo for a well-crafted presentation and had even instructed him to claim a gratuity from the Accounting Department for his efforts.
As a senior assistant, he received praise for his excellent PowerPoint presentation. Isn’t that absurd?
To put it bluntly, Cornell was in a good mood and decided to share his happiness in this way.
But how did Cornell’s mood change so abruptly?
Sensing the change, Matteo said cautiously, “Mr. Clement, the restaurant called, are you still planning to go there as planned?”
Cornell sat silently with a long face.
He felt such overwhelming anxiety that he cajoled Audrey to remarry him, eager to have Audrey at his side with the marriage certificate.
The whole process seemed rushed to him, and within him boiled the desire to celebrate with Audrey. However, she didn’t seem interested at all, even lacking the desire to talk to him.
As for the celebration… Perhaps he was the only one who considered their new marriage worthy of celebration.
To Audrey, their marriage was a mere contractual agreement.
A bitter smile tugged at Cornell’s lips. “Cancel the date. I don’t need it anymore.”
After turning away, Matteo left to alert the restaurant.
“I’m afraid the special package cannot be canceled, so there will be no refund,” Matteo relayed.
The purpose of the package was to create a romantic setting in which a lover could propose to his or her partner. Fresh roses would be selected from the restaurant’s rose garden and placed around the entire space in the morning.
The scene would feature over one hundred thousand roses, creating a truly spectacular show. It was extravagant, but romantic.
Matteo remembered that Cornell had asked him to book a meal yesterday.
Among several upscale establishments, Cornell chose this restaurant and made a particular request to use the red flowers.
Cornell sighed and said, “Okay, I understand.”
Meanwhile, Audrey, who was a few hundred meters away from the subway station, was suddenly stopped by two men dressed in black suits.
Audrey eyed them suspiciously. One of the men said respectfully, “Miss Warburton, come with us, please. Mr. Brooks would like to speak with you.”
Mr. Brooks? Confused, Audrey turned to see a luxurious black car parked nearby.
Rolling down the window, she fixed her eyes on Henley, who smiled a soft, elegant smile at her.
Despite the seemingly friendly gesture, a shiver ran down Audrey’s spine.
He took a few cautious steps back and declined, “I’m sorry, I’m not available right now.”
After saying this, Audrey turned around and ran towards the subway station when Henley was distracted.
Since the station was crowded, she thought Henley would have a hard time catching up.
Audrey had already boarded the train, but he still couldn’t relax. His heart was still beating abnormally fast.
She hadn’t expected to see the other side of Henley. He was so paranoid that it scared her.
Soon, the train pulled into the station.
Audrey blended into the crowd to exit the station, following the people ahead of her.
This subway station was less than two kilometers from her apartment building. If nothing went wrong, she would be home in no time.
Just as she was nearing her building, the group of people in front of her turned in another direction and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Audrey felt so uneasy that she picked up her pace.
She could hear the rustle of footsteps approaching behind her.
Audrey became cautious. When she felt the footsteps quicken, she silently squeezed the pepper spray she carried in her purse. Then, she turned around and raised the spray.
