More surprisingly, he seemed willing to share with her.
The anticipation in her grew.
Perhaps, the reason behind his reappearance was the same as Mortimer’s.
Maybe he left her out of consideration for her safety.
From her understanding of his character, it was something he’d do.
“The answer’s underground,” he said coolly.
Underground? It was a surprising answer. He handed her a handful of sand from his pocket.
She took it from him and instantly understood the issue.
‘Ah, so this is it.”
She chuckled, confirming her suspicion of the Glasses’ unusual kindness.
The land appeared fine on paper, but its soil composition was unsuitable for constructing high buildings.
The Glasses probably noticed the problem and decided to pull the Zellwegers into the project as they feigned ignorance.
After the agreement was signed, the two families would have to shoulder any losses when problems surfaced.
How wicked! She gathered herself and looked at Eustace.
“Why would you be interested in the land?”
She wondered if the Glasses also went to the Quinceys for help—that’d be a very bold move.
“Any partnership between the Glasses and the Zellwegers will affect the Quinceys.”
Not wishing to see the two families working together, he had to destroy the partnership.
Thankfully, the partnership itself was a ruse on its own that didn’t require any action on his part.
After hearing his explanation, more doubts surfaced.
Could Eustace be lying to her? He seemed genuinely unwilling to see the two families working together, though.
“It’s up to you to trust me or not.”
Sensing her suspicion, he shot her a glance and prepared to leave. She chuckled dryly and followed after him.
“No, I trust your words.I simply had some reasonable doubts.Anyway, I’ll buy you a meal to thank you for the help.”* She stopped him, hoping to have a deeper conversation with him.
However, he refused to be involved with her.
Every time they ran into each other, he felt uneasy because he would lose control of himself.
None of Your Business
“There’s no need.”Eustace refused and was about to walk past Danika to get in his car.
Danika didn’t give up.
She looked at Eustace and continued, “Are you afraid of me?”
“Afraid of you?”Eustace sneered, “Why would I be afraid of you?”
“If you’re not afraid, why can’t you dinel with me? Although we’re divorced, that doesn’t mean we have to avoid each other like the plague, right?”
Danika looked at Eustace, trying to catch any unusual change of emotion from his stoic face.
Unfortunately, he remained very calm and aloof.
“I’m not afraid of you; I’m just not bothered. You need to understand the difference between the two.”
Eustace stared back at her, feeling a little annoyed for no reason.
Danika pouted and continued, “Then that’s all the more reason you shouldn’t avoid me.
You want to become the heir of the Quinceys, don’t you? Besides working with the Watkins, shouldn’t you also consider collaborating with the Zellwegers?” Eustace frowned.
“Can you represent the Zellwegers?”
Nodding in response to his question, Danika answered, “Of course.Everyone in Bardoff City knows that I’m the Zellwegers heir.”
Eustace pondered what she’d said for a moment, seemingly really considering that possibility.
Seeing him being so calculative, Danika felt a little saddened. She didn’t expect there would come a day when she would need to propose an exchange of benefits just to have a meal with Eustace.
After some time, he finally nodded.
“Okay, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
He didn’t want to owe Danika too much and felt it was better to keep her at arm’s length.
On the other hand, Danika didn’t care who would pay for the meal.
She just wanted an opportunity to have a private conversation with Eustace.
So, she got into Eustace’s car, and they headed to the nearest restaurant.
On the way to their destination, Danika thought of the day she saw Eustace and Blake walking side by side.
Feeling a little jealous, she asked, “What is your relationship with the lady from the Watkins family?”
“It’s none of your business,” Eustace replied coldly.
Danika was speechless.
She couldn’t help but lament, “You’re the same as when we first met.”
Eustace didn’t say anything. He learned Danika was his ex-wife by reading about their information. He’d read up on how they’d been married for two years but never met, and after their divorce, he began to pester her.
As for what exactly happened back then, he had no recollection.
He didn’t want anyone to discover that he’d lost his memory, so he chose to remain silent.
“I remember you once said you fell in love with me at first sight.”
Danika chuckled lightly, unsure if she was mocking herself or Eustace. Eustace frowned.
He didn’t think he was the kind of person who would say something like that.
Seeing how unaffected he was, Danika couldn’t help but feel disappointed.
“Eustace, if you’re doing this to protect me, it’s unnecessary,” Danika said as their car reached the restaurant.
Eustace was confused by her words.
“What do you mean?” Danika looked out the car window and then got out of the vehicle.
“Let’s talk inside.”
If Eustace was really trying to protect her, he would be cautious and wouldn’t speak the truth where it wasn’t safe.
Eustace followed Danika into the restaurant, but he still didn’t understand what she meant.
Danika chose a private room, ordered food, and asked the waiter to leave them alone.
They were the only ones there.
Danika spoke up, “You can speak freely here. There’s no one else besides us.You don’t have to worry about being recorded as well.”
Eustace furrowed his brows, evidently not understanding why she would say that.
“I remember the time when your father came back—you deliberately picked a fight with me to ensure my safety, and that led to our breakup,” Danika explained, feeling that she’d made everything clear enough for Eustace to comprehend.
It was crystal clear, and Eustace understood the meaning behind her words.Because of that, he couldn’t help but laugh.
No Feelings
“So, you think I purposely said I didn’t like you to protect you?”
Eustace didn’t understand Danika’s train of thought. He couldn’t comprehend how she could come up with such an idea.
It was Danika’s turn to frown. She could sense the sarcasm in Eustace’s words, proving her assumption was way off the mark. She took a deep breath and tried to keep her emotions under control.
“It’s not like you haven’t done this before.”
“That was in the past.”
Eustace’s expression became solemn. He felt ashamed he’d done such a thing before. He couldn’t imagine putting in so much effort just to protect a woman.
Then again, he had unresolved mental issues and wasn’t in a normal state of mind at that time.
