“Do you love or hate him right now? Can you be certain that your feelings for him are only resentment, with no trace of affection?”
Her heart twinged with pain, her breath catching.
Her thoughts went back to that eventful night when a severely injured Jeremy carried her on his back for a long distance. She remembered how he had given her most of his clothes to keep her warm in that damp cave.
Alyssa’s chest felt heavy, and she instinctively curled her numb fingers in response to the unsettling sensation.
She couldn’t help but wonder why Jeremy had never treated Allison Burton as kindly as he had treated her,
Alyssa Taylor.
“Jonah, I know my likes and dislikes. Maybe you’re right-a relationship is never black and white, but that doesn’t apply to me because I know what I want,” she declared in a teary voice and gazed out the window.
“My relationship with Jeremy is complicated, but I no longer have any affection for him. I’ll never repeat my mistake-wasting my youth on a man is a silly decision with no reward,” Alyssa asserted.
Silence enveloped Sean and Tatiana as they journeyed back to her campus, each lost in their thoughts.
The Porsche came to a halt at the school’s quiet entrance in the middle of the night.
Seated in the car, they both seemed to share an unspoken agreement not to get out. The crescent moon cast a soft light over the land, adding a romantic touch to the silence in the car.
“Sean, thanks for driving me back,” Tatiana broke the silence shyly.
Feeling a twinge of regret, Sean responded professionally, considering their status differences, “Ms.
Tatiana, there’s no need for such formality with me. I may have seen you and Ms. Alyssa grow up, but I’m still an employee of the Taylor Group. You should treat me as such.”
Tatiana, who was extremely sensitive, immediately sensed that Sean wanted to put a distance between them.
Tearing up, she muttered in heartache, “I … I won’t give you trouble anymore. Don’t hate me, okay?”
Sean explained with a sigh as he slowly unfastened her seatbelt, “You’ve misunderstood my words.
You’ve never been a bother to me. It’s me who didn’t want to trouble you.”
Their breaths intermingled, and the atmosphere in the car grew tense. Sean consciously avoided her gaze and quickly moved back in his seat. He said to her, “It’s late. I’ll walk you to your dorm.”
With that, he got out of the car.
Repeating his words in her mind, she felt lonely and disappointed. She knew she didn’t have a chance with Sean and that the kiss was merely an accident.
She convinced herself that she was too ordinary to deserve a man like Sean and that she was just being delusional.
After collecting himself, Sean courteously held the door open for Tatiana. She stepped out, her lips paling as she said, I’ll manage on my own. You don’t have to- Oh!”
She exclaimed in panic, squeezing her eyes shut and covering her ears when the sound of a revving engine reached her.
A near-car crash in her childhood had left her with a deep-seated fear of the roaring engines of sports cars.
Seeing that, Sean frowned and swiftly pulled her into a protective embrace. Just then, a silver Laferrari roared down the street at breakneck speed, ruffling Sean’s jacket.
“It’s alright. Don’t be scared. I’m here,” he murmured gently, comforting the trembling Tatiana and patting her. He felt both sympathy for her and anger toward the reckless driver.
The Laferrari stopped at the school entrance. A pair of long and sexy legs emerged from the front.
passenger seat.
Next, a woman with impeccable makeup and a head of brunette curls lazily strutted out of the sportscar in a minidress.
The moment Tatiana saw that woman, her pupils wavered as she trembled more violently in Sean’s embrace.
The woman was Brie Caldwell, a fellow student at the same school with the same major as Tatiana. Brie had caused trouble on numerous occasions, subjecting Tatiana to bullying and humiliation.
Sean suddenly remembered that Alyssa had mentioned Tatiana’s fear of crossing roads and speeding cars.
When Lyla married Winston, their children were still quite young. Some jealous adversaries of Winston attempted to harm his children when they couldn’t bring him down.
At that time, their opponent assumed that Lyla was Winston’s least favorite wife and that her child was also the least favored.
This adversary went to the extreme of hiring assassins to target Tatiana, who was just seven years old, as revenge against Winston for winning business deals against them.
Although Tatiana survived the incident with minor injuries and Winston completely decimated said opponent, she was traumatized and scarred from then on.
Frustrated and furious, Sean inquired, “Ms. Tatiana, are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” she calmly replied with a forced smile, but her pale face and sweaty forehead betrayed the fear that had gripped her.
The attractive woman, Brie, shot a glance in their direction and immediately grew envious and irritated by the sight of Tatiana with a handsome man.
She looked around and put on a mocking expression when she noticed that Sean drove a Porsche that was worth only a million dollars or so. She snickered, “Cheap ass bitch.” a
Though she spoke in a hushed tone, Sean and Tatiana overheard the insult. Filled with anger, Sean told
Tatiana, “Wait for me. I’ll be back soon.”
*Sean!” Tatiana panicked, but it was too late. Sean walked up to Brie and asked, “Who are you referring to?
“Did I say anything? You must have imagined it,” Brie replied with a slightly less hostile tone but equally impudent.
Sean clenched his jaw and balled his fists, knowing that Brie was mocking Tatiana.
However, he felt powerless if Brie wouldn’t admit it, and he couldn’t resort to violence against a woman.
His anger simmered.
“Mr. Schmidt, thank you for the ride. I’m looking forward to our next outing!” Brie spoke in a saccharine tone and blew a kiss toward the car window.
Wait.
Was that Josh Schmidt, the president of the Schmidt Group?
Sean’s brows furrowed. Josh remained silent in the car, even revving the engine provocatively.
Fuming on Tatiana’s behalf, Sean rapped on the car window and said, “Your car nearly hit that young lady back there. Are you really planning to drive off like nothing happened?”
Tatiana pressed her lips together with concern. She didn’t want Sean to stand up for her, and she certainly didn’t want a conflict with Brie.
Yet, the Laferrari driver continued to ignore them.
“Hey, be careful with your words. We were just driving down the road as usual. Did Mr. Schmidt come anywhere near you?” Brie crossed her arms and smirked. “Or are you trying to extort money? I thought you were a gentleman. Why act like this?”
Sean furrowed his brows, about to respond when the car window rolled down.
The driver threw a wad of cash at Sean like it was toilet paper,
“You-” Sean shot a fierce glare at the man behind the wheel. The Laferrari roared to life and swiftly disappeared into the night.
Meanwhile, Tatiana trembled, her expression contorted into a deep frown as she witnessed Sean’s humiliation.
“Gentleman, that’s Mr. Schmidt’s reward for you. Take it,” Brie said. Once Josh was gone, she no longer put up a front.
She leaned toward Sean, puffing her voluminous chest, and touched him on his sleeve.
Brie began, “You look incredibly hot and refined. Why would you want to date a bitch? It’s a blemish on your image. Why don’t you-ugh!”
Sean abruptly stepped back, his face stern. Brie, who had leaned into him, lost her balance and knelt on the floor.
Tatiana couldn’t help but chuckle, her hand covering her mouth.
“That hurts! Shit!” Brie cussed, feeling that her kneecaps had shattered from the fall. She couldn’t stand up in pain and cast a teary glance at Sean as she pleaded, “Help me up, will you? I’m in so much pain and can’t do it myself.”
“You can’t even stand up? I thought you were down on your knees, offering an apology to Tatiana,” Sean taunted. “Regardless, we’ll consider this your apology.”
Silently seething, Brie had an urge to punch the floor to release her anger.
She couldn’t believe that Sean had such audacity to speak down to her. She was Josh Schmidt’s date, after all. Sean was in for a rude awakening!
