“It’s your breakfast. Jeremy Walsh requested his loser secretary to buy it for you.” Sean reluctantly placed the two containers on the table.
At the same time, Xavier was sneezing outside the room. He wondered if someone had badmouthed him behind his back.
Alyssa frowned and questioned, “Where’s Jeremy?”
“He’s getting some checkups.”
When Alyssa opened the lid of the food containers, her eyes widened at the array of Belbanks delicacies.
The plating was immaculate, and the food was both aromatic and delicious. To her surprise, those were all her favorite dishes at home. Her stomach rumbled.
“I heard that Jeremy Walsh sent his people to buy the food from Belbanks at 5:00 am. The containers are insulated, so the food is still hot,” Sean explained robotically as he laid out the breakfast.
He was well aware that Jeremy had made a move to pursue Alyssa. Sean had been in love with Alyssa and did not want to interfere in her love life, but he didn’t want her to date Jeremy.
“Is he crazy? Nobody wanted him to do that!” Despite her complaints, she couldn’t help but shove a hashbrown into her mouth and chew away happily.
Sean smiled wryly at her reaction.
Suddenly, they heard a raspy voice that almost sent Alyssa choking on her food.
“Ms. Alyssa, is the food delicious?”
She coughed violently and pressed a hand against her chest.
“Ms. Alyssa, are you okay?” Sean panicked and quickly patted her on the back.
Jeremy was enraged by Sean touching Alyssa on the back. He knew there was nothing between Alyssa and Sean, but he was green with envy nonetheless.
Frowning, he was about to approach Alyssa when she marched up to him. She confronted him furiously,
What happened last night? How did I end up in that bed?”
“I moved you to the bed. It is uncomfortable sleeping on the couch,” he answered. Due to their proximity, she sensed his hot breath tickling her forehead. It felt rather intimate.
“Nobody asked you to do so! You’re just a busybody.” She glared into his eyes, that was filled with a doting look. Then, she clenched her fists.
“I’ll always be a busybody when it concerns you,” he said sincerely. There was no hint of flirting in his tone.
Paired with his enchanting eyes, he could make any woman fall for him.
“Look, you will not touch me no matter what you do for me. Save the trouble,” she retorted.
Suddenly, she caught some details on his outfit from a casual glance.
He was dressed in a custom navy striped suit and wore a tie that was a gift from her. He even sported a lapel pin that she gave him, Her eyes wavered at his choice of attire.
“Are you getting yourself discharged soon?”
“Yes,” he openly admitted.
“That won’t do. You’re not well enough to be discharged.”
“So, will you stay by my side until I’m well enough to leave the hospital?” he wondered with a grin.
“You’re delusional!” She glowered at him. Maybe she had been too easy on him.
“That’s why I do not want to be kept a prisoner in the hospital. And I want to see you,” he said to her. He had a rebellious yet affectionate look in his eyes.
His childlike demeanor caught her off guard, and she momentarily forgot to deliver her comeback.
“Lyse!” Jonah and Liam showed up at the door, looking smart and stunning.
“Jonah! Liam!” Alyssa immediately left Jeremy behind and ran toward her brothers.
Seeing that, Jeremy frowned and puffed his chest with a hint of competitiveness in his eyes.
He decided he wouldn’t lose out to Alyssa’s two brothers.
Jeremy didn’t have a choice. The men surrounding Alyssa were all distinguished in their own right. Now, he had another Taylor sibling to worry about-Liam, the young colonel.
“Lyse, he didn’t do anything to you, did he?” Liam held Alyssa’s shoulders and examined her from head to toe.
“I’m fine! Let’s leave, Liam,” suggested Alyssa. She tried to drag Liam away, worried that war would break out between Liam and Jeremy at any second.
To her dismay, her worst fear came true.
Liam addressed the others coldly, “Jonah, Sean, please leave with Alyssa. I’ll join you shortly.”
“Liam!” Alyssa called out to him, her tone tinged with concern. She knitted her brows.
“Lyse, let’s go.” Jonah wrapped an arm across her shoulder and gave Jeremy a knowing look.
He then whispered in Alyssa’s ear, “You know Liam is the calmest and the gentlest of all, don’t you? Don’t worry. He knows where to draw the line.”
She let out a sigh and left with Jonah. After all, it was unlikely that anything serious would happen between Liam and Jeremy in a hospital setting.
Jeremy’s intense gaze followed Alyssa on her way out and lingered until the door was closed.
Suddenly, he recalled that she hadn’t had breakfast. He was about to pick up the food container from the table when Liam pressed it back down.
Their gazes locked, and tension hung in the air.
“I’ll send her breakfast. She hasn’t had anything,” Jeremy remarked icily.
“You don’t have to. I’m worried she might suffer after eating food from a massive jerk,” Liam retorted with a chuckle.
Liam continued, “Trying to win her back with pity and sweet talk, are you? You’re the one who caused her suffering! Do you take her for a puppy that can be lured with a treat? You think too highly of yourself.”
“I was in the wrong. From now on, I’ll give my best and treat her well,” Jeremy admitted. He glared at Liam and attempted to retrieve the food container, if he remembered correctly, Alyssa always had digestive issues. Even now, he felt a pang of guilt thinking about her curling up in pain on the couch from gastric distress at the charity auction event.
Liam scoffed. “Hmph, I’d never believe in a word you say!” Then, he suddenly lifted a hand and knocked over the container.
Before Jeremy could react, Liam swiftly tossed the second container onto the ground, sending plates crashing and food scattering across the floor.
Liam’s actions greatly wounded Jeremy.
Liam spat, “Stay away from my sister. Consider this my last warning.”
He pointed a finger at Jeremy’s pale face and added, “Or you’ll end up like the mess on the floor!”
Jeremy closed his eyes and took a deep breath. There was a murderous look in his eyes when he reopened his eyes.
He declared, “I will not give up on her. I have decided that she’s the one for me. I love her, and I want to be with her. Even if everyone is against my decision and the Taylor family tries to sabotage me, I will not waver.”
Liam was jumping in anger at Jeremy’s audacity. Soon, he burst into a mocking laughter.
“Did you think the Taylor family could stand in your way? We tried to talk Lyse out of marrying you, but she went ahead anyway.
“Tell you what, even if our family did nothing, she’d never get back with you. You’ve exhausted all her love and patience. There’s no room for you in her heart anymore.
“Do not mistake her action yesterday for love. She’s much like her father, loyal and principled. She would have done the same for someone else. So, please do not flatter yourself.”
Jeremy’s heart was thumping wildly as he curled his fist. No matter what people said to him, his feelings for Alyssa would not change.
After a period of fighting, confrontation, and entanglement, he realized that he had fallen for Alyssa. Even he worried that he might have arrived at the realization too late.
He feared he no longer had a place in her heart, just like what Liam had said.
Liam ignored Jeremy and marched out of the door. Suddenly, he came to a halt and dropped a remark, saying, “I heard from Lyse that you came from a military background. Pfft. You are a disgrace to the military!”
Xavier stood in the corridor outside the patient room and glanced warily at the two lines of guards standing there. Their uniform posture and cold demeanor sent a chill down his spine.
The door to Jeremy’s room flung open, followed by the heavy thud of military boots.
Liam showed up with a stoic expression while adjusting his beret. After years of strict military training, he was able to keep a poker face at any time.
