Bitches will always be bitches-even their daughters are the same!” she bellowed.
Without hesitation, Danika gave her a slap across the face. “Watch your language.”
Rowena stared at Danika in shock and thought, “How dare she slap me?” Jolene was faster to respond to Danika. “You bitch! How dare you slap my mom? I’ll kill you!” Then, she charged at Danika, her judgment clouded by anger-she seemed to have forgotten about Danika’s superior combat skills and was instantly subdued by her. Once again, she experienced the horrifying feeling of suffocation, except that Danika was choking her this time instead of Eustace.
She struggled with all her might because she refused to go through another near-death situation. “Mom, save me!” she yelled at Rowena in fear. Rowena snapped out of her anger and rushed over to Danika. “Let go of her! Jo’s your sister! What are you doing to her?”
“What am I doing to her? You never considered me as your sister when you plotted against me.” Instead of letting go, Danika tightened her hold on Jolene’s neck.
Jolene was likely traumatized by her encounter with Eustace the last time, and tears were streaming down her face. “Danika, I was wrong. Please forgive me.”
“Do you know you’re in the wrong now?’ Danika questioned. Jolene nodded furiously. “I admit I was in the wrong. I won’t do that to you anymore.”
We’re Sisters
Finally, Danika let go of Jolene, but it wasn’t because she trusted her words. She had heard the noise of a car from the door and guessed that Graham was home.
When he stepped foot in the living room, he instantly noticed something was wrong. He scanned the three faces, his gaze settling on Danika’s. ‘What happened?”
She shook her head at him with a smile. “Nothing.”
The fight just now was nothing to Danika, but Jolene felt differently about it. She stood up and ran over to Graham as she planned to reveal everything that Danika had done to her. She needed to show Graham Danika’s merciless nature.
However, Rowena held her daughter back and shook her head. “Nothing happened. We were chatting with Danika, and she mentioned that you’d go to Parrington with her tomorrow.”
Graham frowned as he knew something must have happened among the three women. Since Danika assured him everything was fine and Rowena was tightlipped about it, he didn’t press further. Jolene didn’t look like she was picked on anyway.
“Yeah. That’s Danika’s hometown, after all. It’s time I pay a visit.” He nodded. Rowena forced a smile. “Sounds right. I’ll have the maids pack your luggage. You should take a rest.”
“Okay.” He was exhausted after a long day and went up to the study after a brief chat with Danika.
Once he left, Jolene immediately broke down. “Mom, why did you stop me from telling him?” As there was a surveillance camera in the living room, once she told on Danika and showed the footage as evidence, she could prove Danika’s unbecoming behavior from earlier.
Rowena felt sorry for her daughter. “Your dad clearly favors her now. There’s no use telling him the truth. He might even think you’re sowing discord.”
Judging from Graham’s concern for Danika, he might get to the bottom of the planned attack if he launched an investigation. Rowena wouldn’t want to see that.
“But…” Jolene was aggrieved, feeling that life had been difficult ever since
Danika joined the family. A lot of her possessions were taken away, from her father to the title of the Zellweger family’s only daughter. Not only that, she had to live under threat every day. She wondered how long this would last.
“My dear sister, your mom’s right. We’re sisters. You shouldn’t sow discord in front of Dad.” Danika flashed an annoying smile at her. Jolene wanted to beat
Danika up but knew she was no match for her. Hence, she could only grit her teeth resentfully.
Danika couldn’t be bothered about Jolene’s resentment-the hateful glares would not affect her in any way. Seeing that Jolene wasn’t going to try anything, Danika finally retired to her room.
Meanwhile, Eustace woke up refreshed at the psychologist’s clinic. He enjoyed excellent sleep, an incredibly rare occurrence in his life.
When he opened his eyes, he immediately saw an alluring woman standing in front of him. She asked, “How do you feel today?”
“Pretty peachy,” he answered truthfully. The woman was Blake Watkins, the psychologist Danika introduced to him. Eustace had no idea the psychologist was a woman when he first called. He attended the first session without any expectations, but the outcome surprised him.
He felt enveloped by peace, a far cry from his impatient mind from before.Even though he wasn’t fully cured, he acknowledged the psychologist’s expertise, which prompted him to attend a second session.
You Need to Learn to Control Your Emotions
“When can I fully recover?” That was Eustace’s main concern because he wanted to meet with Danika.
Blake probably read his mind and sat across from him with a smile. “The first thing you need to do is to learn self-control. You mentioned that you couldn’t stop yourself from wanting to keep Danika by your side and that you couldn’t stand the sight of men around her. These are symptoms of a mental health disorder. Your mental health issue did not surface over a few days. They are the culmination of poor mental health over the years. A fast recovery is rather impossible.”
Eustace frowned upon hearing her professional opinion. He knew his condition was severe, but he wanted the answer to another pressing question.”
Based on what you said just now, I can’t meet Danika before I fully recover. Is that right?” He would rather give up on the treatment if that were the case. The reason he attended therapy in the first place was so that he could be with Danika. If he was forced to give up on meeting her because of it, it’d be against his goal.
Blake shook her head and explained, “If you want to meet her, you can go ahead. My advice is not to meet with her too frequently. That won’t help with your treatment. Right now, you need to learn to control your emotions. You cannot be a slave to it. If you succeed, I’d consider that a recovery.”
Once he received a green light from Blake to meet with Danika, he beamed and ignored the rest of her advice. Standing up, he was ready to leave. He needed to meet Danika-he couldn’t wait anymore.
Blake was speechless at his behavior. “Haven’t I told you to control yourself?
Why do I feel like you utterly lack self-control?”
“I think you need to focus on getting to the roots of my fear of the dark, not the other issues.” Eustace believed that the root of all his mental health issues was that his mother had passed away before his eyes, contributing to his longtime fear of the dark. He didn’t think that Danika played a role in it at all.
“Yes. Your fear of the dark is the root of all problems. You can only face the dark once we untangle your emotions.” She didn’t deny his claim. As a psychologist, she was well aware of the reason behind his emotional turmoil. However, the situation had grown complex, and she couldn’t solve his mental health issues just by addressing his childhood trauma.
Eustace didn’t plan to discuss more as he walked to the door. “Your treatment is very effective. My assistant will transfer the payment to you.”
With that, he left the clinic. Blake didn’t stop him. She merely stared at him with questions in her head. She wondered about the identity of the woman with whom Eustace was deeply in love. There was another possibility, though- Eustace could have just been a special case.
Eustace wasn’t interested in Blake’s opinions about him. After exiting the clinic, he drove to Zellweger Castle and parked his car there. Then, he called Danika and waited for a while before she picked up. He almost thought she’d ignore his call.
“Danika,” he called out to her once the call was connected.
Danika experienced an odd feeling upon hearing his voice. “It’s late. What’s the matter?”
In the past few days, Eustace had not once visited her at the hospital or called her after learning she was injured in an incident. She was disappointed in him, and her frustration was reflected in her tone.
Don’t You Think It’s Too Late?
Eustace had wanted to say more, but the passion in his heart quickly dissipated upon hearing how cold Danika was to him. Still, he didn’t hang up immediately.
‘How have you been?” he asked.
“Don’t you think it’s too late to ask me that, Eustace?” Danika huffed. Eustace’s behavior confused her. It had been days without hearing from him.
Eustace knew he was at fault. He had planned to meet with Danika that day after their call. He never expected Dr. Watkins to tell him not to see her, for him to learn to control himself. Which was why he never went to her. But that didn’t mean he didn’t care about her. He had still gone to the hospital to check on her, only leaving after seeing that she was okay.
On the other end of the call, Danika was getting even more upset now that he had gone silent. “What? Cat got your tongue? When did you learn how to keepyour mouth shut?”
“I’m sorry,” Eustace said solemnly. “I’ve been preoccupied with some business. That’s why I didn’t come to see you.”
“Oh.” Preoccupied couldn’t cut it. He should’ve at least called her to check up on her, granted he was busy dealing with the Glass family.
“I’m right outside Zellweger Castle. Do you…want to come out for a bit?” Eustace asked gingerly.
As much as Danika wanted to refuse, she couldn’t. She had been worried about him these past few days, especially knowing now that the Glass family had turned their scopes on him.
Just as Eustace was about to lose hope, Danika said, “Alright. I’ll be right down.” The call ended, leaving him to stare incredulously at it. “What did Danika say?
She’d be right down? I didn’t hear her wrong, right?” he thought.
A minute later, Danika appeared by the front gate. She stormed over to Eustace, whowas still blanking out.
Okay, so he did hear her right. “Thank you for coming out to see me, Danika.”
“Don’t try to change my mind. I’m not forgiving you that easily.” Danika was still upset.
“I know. It’s my fault.” Eustace hung his head disparagingly. “I’m sorry.” Now Danika really didn’t know what to say. She swallowed what she would have said had she still been fuming and sighed. “Is that all you called me out here for?”
“Yeah. And to see you. I’m glad to see that you’re okay.’ Idiot, Danika thought. “Aren’t you even gonna take me out for supper?
Eustace froze momentarily before a smile painted his face. “Of course, of course, I will.’ He went to open his car door for Danika. “My treat.”
After the two left, a figure walked out from behind the front gate. It was Jolene.
“What a whore. Mr. Windsor in one palm and her ex-husband in the other,’ she sneered. “I need to let Mr. Windsor know about this immediately.”
Seem to be Really Close
Neither Danika nor Eustace spoke a word during the ride, and the atmosphere around them remain as tense as a tightrope.
“When are you going back to Parrington?” Eustace finally asked, breaking the ice.
“Tomorrow.”
Eustace nodded, saying nothing else.
“What about you? When will you go back?”
Eustace gave it some thought. He was nearly done with his business here in Bardoff City. He could always visit Dr. Watkins to continue their sessions whenever he was free. “Tomorrow, with you,” he replied.
Danika was surprised. Wasn’t Eustace busy dealing with the Glasses right now?”
Are you sure? What about the Glasses…”
Hearing that she was concerned about him made him feel much better. “I can handle them. It’s not like they can do anything to stop me from going back to Parrington.’
In truth, the Glasses weren’t seriously concerned by Eustace’s presence. Even their power plays were done just to scare Eustace into stopping his plans.
They never expected him to face it head-on, though.
“Oh.I’m leaving with Graham Zellweger, so I can’t leave with you.”
Graham had already set a private plane for both of them. Best to let Eustace know right now.
“That’s alright. I’ll be right behind you guys.” Eustace shrugged. He wasn’t worried.
