“He brought me a marriage proposal,” I said, trying to be calm.
“I am going to kill that bastard!!! I will surely kill him!!!” Jake screamed. He was still holding me from my shoulders, and his whole body was shaking.
I tried to lift my hand and touch his face…
But he shook his head and pulled himself away from me… He then started to punch the metal frame of the car door aggressively.
“Jake… Please stop… You are going to hurt yourself…” I tried to stop him, but he was out of control… There is no doubt his knuckles are already bleeding.
“Jake… Calm down… We can’t do anything getting angry like this…” Luke said, trying to stop Jake…
“How can I be calm right now, Luke? How can I? I took everything he has done to me so far. I didn’t do anything when he accused us of his girlfriend’s death. I didn’t do anything when he publicly disgraced my family. I endured it when he didn’t even let us see my aunt in her last few minutes. I stood every single evil thing he did to me and my family. I didn’t know what to say. So, I just took his hand from both of my hands and pressed it to my chest… With the faint light, I saw how his knuckles got all reddish and bleeding. That must be really painful, but there is no doubt that the pain in his heart is much greater.
“Everything you said is right. But Jake, we can’t solve problems like this. We have to handle this issue very carefully because it involves Sarah and her family as well..” Luke said.
“He knows very well that when he drags Sarah’s family to the matter things get extremely serious, and I have a huge disadvantage because I can’t go and talk to her parents like he did. So he gave an amazing offer to her brother to impress her parents and get what he wants.” Jake said. He was talking like he talks just to himself.
“Did he tell it to your parents in front of you?” Luke asked.
“No… He discussed that privately with my parents. I and Shane got to know about it only after he left our house.”
“Your parents would love the offer, right? He is handsome, rich, from a high-class family, got a good job, and also he offered to help Shane.” Jake asked. His voice was filled with frustration.
“Actually, they are trying to connect this with something else and make me accept this offer,” I said.
“Connect with something else… What is that?”
I explained to them everything both dad and Shane told me about my childhood. None of them uttered even a word until I finish. Jake just put his arm around my shoulder and made me cuddled to him. He was caressing my head gently for the whole time I was speaking.
“Dad indirectly said that I am in debt to them for what they have done for me, so I have to accept this offer,” I said, finishing my explanation.
“That is ridiculous,” Luke yelled.
“What you think about it, princess… Do you think you have to accept this offer because you are in debt to your family?” Jake asked calmly.
“Honestly, I don’t know, Jake. I feel so sorry for my parents. They went through a hell lot just because of me and I think they deserve a relaxed, peaceful life at least now…”
“So are you going to accept this?” Jake asked interrupting me. His voice was shaking.
“Let me finish…” I said.
“Even though I am truly grateful to my parents, I don’t want to marry that bastard for any reason,” I added.
Jake released a sigh…
“Princess… I am grateful to your parent too… If they didn’t sacrifice so much for you, I won’t be able to hold you like this in my arms today. But they can’t use that as a reason to force you to marry someone you don’t like. That is truly unfair.” Jake said. “That is exactly what Shane also said,” I said.
“Did he tell something like that?” Luke asked.
Luke is one of the most understanding and open thinking person I ever know. I don’t know why he always thinks about my brother in the wrong way.
“He did tell like that, Luke. That’s why I said you have the wrong image of my brother.” I said.
“So what are we gonna do now?” Jake asked.
“I am going to tell my parents that I will never marry that bastard. Shane will be there backing me.” I said.
Jake placed a kiss on my forehead.
“You know I love more and more this new confident Sarah… And I am truly happy for her strong relationship with her twin…” he then said with a smile.
“But do you think, Sarah’s parents would just accept it,” Luke asked.
“Definitely no… I can’t even imagine what kind of drama my mom would create.” I replied.
“As you said your parents deserve a break now, princess… They deserve a relaxed, comfortable life and I am capable of giving them that. I don’t need my family’s support for that. I can do it on my own. I just need some more time, that’s all…” Jake said. “I know that, Jake… ” I replied.
“I can come to your house, princess, and tell your parents how much I love you. I can beg them not to force you to marry anyone else. I can guarantee them a happy life they deserve. I can come tomorrow and talk with your parents.” Jake said. “Are you crazy? That will ruin everything.” Luke yelled.
“I can’t let them force you for anything, my princess… I can’t let them hurt you.” Jake said, holing my face between his hands and kissing my cheeks.
“I know, babe… I know you would do anything for me. But as Luke said, that will ruin everything we did. My mom can never keep a secret. She will go everywhere telling people Victor McMiller’s son is going to marry me. The election is around the corner. We have to wait just a little bit longer. Don’t worry, I can manage it until that. They have hurt me since I can remember, Jake… So that is not a new thing for me…” I said, smiling.
“But anytime you feel you can’t hold this any longer just tell me. I will come and talk to your parents. You are important to me more than anything else.” Jake said, and then he captured my lips for a quick but sensational kiss…
The next day, I prepared my parent’s favorite dinner just to make them a bit less violent when we tell our decisions to them.
As you all may assume a dinner was not enough to calm them down.
I first tell them that I am not going to marry Mr. Patterson. Mom got all fired up as soon as she heard that.
“What are you insane? Do you think you will ever get a better proposal than this? This is like winning a lottery. You are just nobody, but him… He has everything, yet he wants to marry you. Why the hell you deny such an opportunity.” she asked angrily. “Mom… It is her decision. No matter even if he is Prince William, if she doesn’t like him, she should not marry him. ” before I reply to mom, Shane came to my rescue. “Why you are taking her side all of sudden? If she doesn’t agree to what he said then you won’t get that internship, sponsorship, or anything.” mom said.
“I told you two clearly, mom. I don’t want anything from that man. Why can’t you understand, getting anything from him is like making a deal with the devil.” Shane said.
“Shane! Why can’t you understand the importance of his offer to your carrier? With your GPA and all do you even think you will be able to find a good job? Your future totally depends on football, and I am not capable of spending on it in the future. I am too old now, I have no energy to work now.” dad told to Shane.
The way he told that actually made me feel sad about him. What he said was true. He is old and weak now. My dad was handsome when he was young. He looked just like Shane. But now he has become so thin and his face always looks like he is exhausted.
“I know that, dad. I am not going to let you work like this. I am capable of finding good sponsorship on my own. Also, no matter what my GPA is based on my football carrier I am capable of finding a good job too. I just need some more time, we are graduating in a couple of months. I will make everything up to you after that, I promise.” Shane said.
“This bi**h has brainwashed my son, Charles. Otherwise, my Shane won’t refuse this” mom started to crying and cursing me.
Dad was staring at me for a few seconds.
“Even after I told you about everything we had to go through because of you, you still don’t think we deserve a break?” he then asked. His words and the tone of his words felt like stabbing me.
