“How could your son go back on his word?Which sane young woman could bear news as crushing as that? Do you want my daughter to die?”
Javier’s face was just as stormy, though he remained silent.
“We … We’re not as powerful or influentialas the Taylor family, but we’re still decent people. This matters to us, Javier. You can’t allow your son to push our daughter around like this!”
Rosaline had slowly risen to her feet with Betty’s help. She glared at Javier, shrieking,”We won’t let this go that easy, Walsh! If your son calls off this marriage, we will … We will drag you all down with us!”
She knew her daughter’s rash decision was to force Jeremy to hurry up and marry her. The two had known one another since they were young.
If Jeremy had even an ounce of affection for her, he wouldn’t just sit by and leave her to desolation.
Even if the marriage didn’t happen, Rosaline still aimed to benefit from the Walsh family. That way, she could at least ensure her family’s wealth and influence.
Javier sighed, looking away.
Sophia’s news was already in the papers.
News of Liana’s attempted suicide would only worsen their already troubled situation.
Javier dreaded the day when shareholders would withdraw as stocks hit rock bottom.
He couldn’t sit by and wait for Jeremy to decide anymore.”Don’t you worry. When Liana wakes up, I’ll let her know the marriage is confirmed. No matter what, there will be no more changes to her engagement with Jeremy!”
Only then did Andrew and Rosaline’s expression take on one of ease.
But Rosaline still had some concerns. Jeremy was no longer that powerless, meek bastard of years before. He might not submit to Javier’s decisions.
Just then, heavy footsteps rang out from the other end of the hallway. It was Jeremy, his face stark and pale in the light.
“How is Lia?”
Before Javier could answer, Rosaline descended on him like a seagull swooping down on a fry. Her hand curled around his collar.
“Look at what you’ve done, JeremyWalsh! When has my daughter ever hurt you? Why did you have to push her to her wits’ end? Is this all so that you can fool around with that ex-wife of yours?”
“Calm down, Mrs. Gardner!”Xavierhurriedly pulled Rosaline away. They had to stay quiet les t the crowd outside decided to start taking pictures or videos.
“Calm down? Calm down?I don’t evenknow if my daughter will survive the night! She has shed tears and blood for you, Jeremy. She might not even live to see another day! Don’t tell me to calm down!”Rosaline screamed.
She continued, “If you didn’t love my Lia, then why did you lie to her? Why did you pro mise you would marry her? My Lia is too sweet a girl. When you wanted to kill yourself all those years ago, she rescued you! How could you do this to her? Have you no heart?”
Jeremy’s heart ached dully. Those dark memories flooded his chest and mind, making it increasingly difficult to breathe. Those memories consumed his thoughts until they were all he could think about.
…
Alyssa had been sent to the hospital to have her wound bandaged up, thanks to Jameson Schmidt.
She had asked Sean to stay back and look after Tatiana. She was concerned that Tatiana would be frightened by the sight of her injury.
Meanwhile, Tatiana kept blaming herself for her sister’s accident, making Sean’s heart clench painfully at the sight. He felt like one more blow might just knock the poor girl out for good.
Thankfully, Alyssa had dodged slightly when facing the attacker’s blade, so the cut was only skin-deep.
When she exited the ER, her arm had been treated with medicine and wrapped in gauze. She even got a tetanus shot just to be safe.
Alyssa tossed aside her dirty, torn sweater, revealing her wine-red silk dress.
Jameson kept a watchful eye on her. His gaze turned seductive as it lingered on her long lashes and delicate smile.
He took his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.”Here. It’s cold out.”
“No, thank you.”Alyss a quickly removedit, but Jameson snugly wrapped it around her, even buttoning the front. 7
“Aren’t you worried your sister andassistant will freak out if they see your injury? Keep it on for now.”
Alyss a pursed her lips, no longer trying to take the coat off. This man was too kind and gentle with her, always knowing just what to do. She found herself unable to refute his gestures.
“What were you doing in theneighborhood, sir?”
“I live in the area.”That was a lie. Hiscompany had a development project nearby, but he didn’t reside anywhere near the location.
“Oh? How coincidental.”
“You’re the strongest woman I’ve met.You didn’t flinch once when the nurses were tending to your wound. Even I grimaced a little,” Jameson changed the topic, never looking away from her.
“You’ll be surprised how many women areas tough as I am, sir. I’m sure you’ll be lucky to meet some of them.”Alyssa smiled.
That made Jameson grin.
“Oh, but I don’t want anyone else. Justyou,” Jameson thought to himself.
“Sir, I appreciate your concern andassistance thus far, but unexpectedly being held by someone I have no connection with or knowledge of …
“I realize it might have been aspontaneous act on your part, but I’m uncomfortable with getting too close to strangers,” Alyssa expressed. She distinctly disliked it when Jameson princess carried her.
“I apologize. I did the first thing that cameto mind when I saw you were hurt.”Jameson nodded lightly.”I’ll be more careful.”
Alyssa hummed in acknowledgment, pleased. He was genuine enough for her to let this go.
“Oh, by the way, I don’t believe we’veintroduced ourselves. What is your name, sir?”
Jameson opened his mouth, about to answer, when a cold, harsh voice called from behind them.
“Alyssa Taylor.”
Alyssa froze in surprise, then slowly turned around.
Once again, it was him.
Jeremy felt like the ground was sinking as he watched Alyssa stand beside the man from earlier. He looked down and noticed her heavily bandaged arm. His heart clenched at that sight. He instinctively took a step forth.”Your arm-“
Alyssa swiftly stepped back behind Jameson.
Nervously, Jeremy gulped when he locked eyes with the other man.
“People say the third time’s the charm. However, I usually make sure it ends the second time,”Jameson said deliberately, adjusting his spectacles. “You’ve taken her away from me once tonight. Do you think I’d allow it a second time?”
“Who are you?” Jeremy asked frostily.
Having learned his lesson with Alyssa’s brothers, he worried that this might be another one of Winston Taylor’s sons. However, Alyss a gazed at the man differently, a look distinct from the one she used with her brothers.
“He’s someone with a closer relationshipto me than you, someone more important, “Alyssa spoke up just then.
Jameson shot her a pleased grin.
“I made myself clear earlier outside theclub, Jeremy. I don’t understand why you continued to hold on. What’s the point of all this?”
Jeremy bristled upon hearing Alyssa’s words.”Shouldn’t you know better, Alyssa? You got yourself drunk with some stranger you’ve never met. I was worried about you.”
Alyssa scowled.”Your worry disgusts me.
Please, Mr. Walsh. I’ve hurled my guts out once. I don’t want a second time.”
She couldn’t be more cruel.
Jeremy opened his mo uth as if to speak, but his heart hurt so intensely that he couldn’t find any words.
Wave after wave of pain had struck him deep tonight, making it nearly impossible to stand upright. It felt as though he was slowly falling apart at the seams.
Why was it that the longer they were apart from each other, the more he couldn’t let her go?
Was he actually regretting their divorce?
Jeremy descended into a downward spiral of self-doubt. Had he been wrong from the start?
“Mr. Walsh!Mr. Walsh, Ms. Gardnerhas … She’s out of the critical period now! “Just then, Xavier yelled, running over tothem.
