Greed and lust swelled in the man’s being. He pressed Liana against the wall, saying, “Tell me who this woman is.”
The next day, when Xavier yelled from his desk, Jeremy had just entered his office with a mug of cooled coffee, ready to admire the vast Solana City view outside his office windows.
“What is the meaning of this? What on earth is Mr. Javier thinking?” His grip on the letter of appointment on his desk was so tight that it seemed nearly ready to tear.
He continued, “How could he appoint Sophia Kirkman as Vice Chairman? What qualifications does she have? What can she even contribute? Pigs would fly before she succeeds at this position!”
Javier assigned the Verdane Valley project to her so she could gain an upper hand for the board,”
Does Mr. Javier still not trust you?” Xavier cried. “Everyone knows Mr. Justin isn’t fit to take over.
He still needs a wheelchair to be able to move about!
“Mr. Javier can’t be so selfish as to withhold the position from you. You’re his son too! He clearly appointed Sophia to create an obstacle for you. What kind of father does that?”
“That’s enough, Xavier *
Jeremy looked down at his mug. “I know you worry for my sake, but never bring this up beyond this office” T
“What do we do now, sir?” Xavier sighed.
“Not everything can be dealt with at first instance. If this is Javier’s move, then I have no choice but to make my stand.”
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was Landon.
Jeremy was tempted to ignore it, but the vibration was too irritating.
“What?”
“I… I have a broken heart, Jeremy… Can we hang out tonight?” Landon sounded weak and helpless over the phone.
“Hell no.”
Jeremy was about to hang up when Landon cried, “Alyssa broke up with me! For real this time! Oh, my love… my heart… my soul has died.”
Jeremy remained unbothered. There was the faintest hint of a smile on his face before he said, “
Serves you right.”
To facilitate the Verdane Valley project, Javier invited Mayor Hodgson and his wife to play golf.
This place was usually frequented only by society’s elite. But today, it seemed Javier had booked the whole place, leaving the golf range to only their own men.
Sophia was terrible at golf. Still, she dolled herself up well for today’s outing. Light makeup, cotton golf clothes, and a sleek golf club made her look quite youthful, especially while standing by her daughter, Betty. They looked almost like sisters.
She had brought Betty over so the Mayor and his wife could get a glimpse of her. Betty was 25 now, after all. Sophia believed it was time for Betty to marry, despite her obsession with Landon Harper.
“Mr. and Mrs. Hodgson,” Betty greeted politely, putting on her sweetest smile.
“This must be your daughter. She’s even more beautiful in person!” Minnie Minks, now Mrs. Hodgson, said with a beam.
That made Sophia and Betty tense up for a quick second. While Minnie might not have intended any harm, it still felt like she was sarcastically alluding to Betty’s previous public media conference.
“Sorrygate” was no longer trending online. But there were still emojis and stickers online that mocked Betty’s embarrassing moments from that time, along with hurtful comments and nicknames.
Orlander Hodgson nudged his wife gently, clearing his throat. Only then did Minnie realize what she had said. She gave an embarrassed laugh. “Aha … your daughter truly is a beauty, Mrs. Walsh. She might be the prettiest among the bachelorettes in Solana City.”
“You’re very kind, Madam.” Sophia beamed, holding onto her daughter’s arm. “Where is your son, I wonder? I’ve long heard how fine a young man he is. He even studied in the same institution as my Betty did.”
“Ah, he had some matters to tend to today.”
“What a shame. Another time then. I’ll arrange another get-together for both our families,” Sophia suggested enthusiastically.
Minnie gave her a perfunctory laugh. “Haha, of course. When there’s time, yes … Anyway, I thought you have another daughter, Mrs. Walsh? Your youngest, I believe? She isn’t here with you today?”
Betty’s fake smile nearly crumbled. It was clear as day that Minnie wasn’t interested in her whatsoever.
Betty was unaffected. After all, she wasn’t interested in their son either. But bringing up that little bitch she had to call her sister was too insulting!
Sophia replied, “My youngest has weaker health than most of us, so she often stays at home to rest. She’s also quite introverted, so I didn’t ask her to join us today.”
“Oh dear. Does she have some medical condition?”
“No, no. It’s no big deal. She just needs to stay at home to rest.” Sophia assured, though she had already heard Minnie’s implicit message. The woman clearly liked Lauren more than Betty.
But her daughters weren’t products to be pondered and bought over!
At this point, Javier and Jeremy had already gone through a few rounds of golf with Orlander. They were taking a stroll, chatting leisurely.
“We’re so glad you let us handle this project, Mr. Hodgson.” Javier laughed heartily as he shook hands with Orlander.
“We’re more than just business partners, old friend. Of course I had to have you help me with this.” Orlander had known Javier for over two decades.
“Come, let’s go out tonight. My treat!”
“Thank you, but it’s my father-in-law’s birthday tonight, so I won’t be free,” Orlander said. “We can drink our fill this Friday once the contract is signed!”
Jeremy kept a straight face as the two men talked, but he felt increasingly anxious.
He needed to snatch this project under his name before Friday. If they signed the contract this Friday, he would have very little opportunity to make progress in the future.
Even if he exposed Sophia’s crimes, Javier would still insist on keeping the matter within the family circle rather than making it public.
That was why the only recourse Jeremy had was to create something so jarring and shocking to the public eye that they had no choice but to kick Sophia off the team.
Just then, a golf cart drove up to them and stopped.
“Good morning, Mr. Hodgson and Mr. Javier.”
Jeremy’s heart leaped into his throat when he realized who was speaking.
Sitting on the golf cart was none other than Alyssa herself!
His blood felt both warm and cold, and a sense of awe washed over him. This happened despite the humiliation he endured from her yesterday.
Yesterday felt more and more like a dream that never happened.
Everyone present was stunned. Betty was the first to cry out, “How did you get in here?”
“Through the front entrance? I’m a VIP here.” Alyssa gave her a lazy side¨Ceye, making her anger go from zero to a hundred in a matter of seconds. Even Betty’s cheeks flushed red with embarrassment.
After being humiliated by Alyssa that day, she couldn’t even look at a pair of flats without getting
PTSD.
Sophia’s expression was one of being taken aback. Meanwhile, Minnie was enthralled by Alyssa.
Who was this beautiful young woman? She was just how she envisioned her daughter¨Cin¨Claw to be
-elegant, beautiful, regal.
Sean exited the golf cart, helping Alyssa step out. She was dressed in a light blue polo shirt with a white cap atop her dark locks. She looked quite like the prime of her youth.
Jeremy’s outfit just so happened to match hers, making it seem like a couple’s outfit.
Jeremy narrowed his eyes the slightest, unable to stop himself from praising how beautiful Alyssa looked.
“What a coincidence to meet you here, Ms. Alyssa,” Javier greeted warmly.
Alyssa clasped her hands behind her back, smiling. “Oh, but it’s no coincidence, sir.”
“Sorry?”
Jeremy’s hand clenched slightly when he realized the implications of Alyssa’s demeanor. They had crossed paths enough for him to pick up on how she tended to get things done. It wouldn’t be
She wasn’t here by coincidence, which could only imply she had something big planned.
