Many young couples were waiting for their turn at the entrance to the city hall early in the morning. They were either hugging or taking photos sweetly.
The Rolls¨CRoyce in dark emerald, with its Spirit of Ecstasy mascot sculpture, came to a stop in front of the city hall. Many of the young couples were in awe at the sight of that.
Alyssa checked her wristwatch. It was 9:00 am.
“Hah. Surprisingly, Jeremy did not show up early.” Sean mocked, “The president of the Walsh
Group is indeed arrogant.”
“Whatever. Let him be.” She checked out the youthful faces from the curtain. Their eyes were shining with joy. She remarked, “I’ve waited for him countless times. I don’t mind waiting for one last time.
Three years ago, she waited for Jeremy at the entrance of city hall on the day they were supposed to register their marriage. She was starving all day until he showed up right before the closing time without a word of apology. He rushed through their marriage registration at the very last minute
Even so, she was too excited to sleep after they registered their marriage.
In retrospect, she was a hopeless pushover. She finally understood that she had to love herself before loving someone else.
After half an hour, Alyssa almost lost her patience when she saw a cab stopping in front of the city hall. She couldn’t believe her eyes when Jeremy emerged from the cab.
“F***! Did I see it wrong? Why did the president take a cab here? Could he not afford to fuel his
Maybach?” Sean’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Maybe he wants to keep a low profile. The divorce is not something to be proud of.” Alyssa yawned and got out of the car with Sean.
As usual, Jeremy wore his favorite black suit with thin grey stripes, a dusty blue shirt, and a dark-
colored tie. His style screamed aloof, stern, and disciplined, just like his character.
The arrival of the handsome Jeremy caused a stir among the crowds, especially the ladies, who might squeal in delight if they weren’t with their boyfriends.
It was the men’s turn to look delighted when Alyssa walked up to Jeremy with poise.
“Wow, look at her face! It’s as clear as crystal. Is her skin real?”
“I think she’s bare¨Cfaced. Her dress is lovely! Please tell me how much it costs, so I’ll forget about ever buying it!”
“Pfft, she must be flaunting the bare makeup look, but I’ll admit she is good at makeup!”
“You got to have good looks to start with! You can’t look like her just by applying makeup!”
The young people, who were mostly interested in entertainment news, did not realize that they were looking at Jeremy Walsh, the president of the Walsh Group. His arrival in the cab offered a cover for his identity.
Standing in front of him coldly, Alyssa confronted him, “Mr. Walsh, you’re-“
He cut her off in a heavy tone, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine as long as you make it here before 5:00 pm. We’ll have to wait a day more if the city hall is closed.” Alyssa dropped a chilly remark and marched to the entrance, leaving Jeremy behind.
His throat tightened.
He was brought back to the day they registered their marriage three years ago. As he was notified of an emergency meeting by Yoarkley’s project manager, he had no choice but to stay back at the company.
After the meeting, he had to host a VIP who dropped by. When the meeting was over, it struck him that he had forgotten to inform Alyssa about the postponement of the marriage registration.
The memories of that day were vivid and cruel. When he rushed over to the city hall, the place was almost empty. There, he found Alyssa alone, looking downcast. Her frail figure appeared lonely and pitiful.
He did not expect her to wait a day for him. Her stubbornness was one of a kind.
He had wanted to apologize to her. However, he did not do so because he struggled with mixed emotions from his grandpa’s pressure, his aversion to contract marriage, and his recent separation.
from Liana.
“Jeremy, you’re finally here!” He could still picture Alyssa’s smile, which was a ray of sunshine. In the past, he never knew if he’d ever got to the point where Alyssa was disappointed in him.
Now, he realized that his cruel neglect and abandonment led to her disappointment. Not only that, she had lost her feelings for him.
His face was tense and filled with shame as he followed Alyssa past the entrance.
“Are they here to register their marriage? Good gosh! They are a match made in heaven!”
They don’t look happy, though.”
“The bride’s upset because the groom was late! He deserved it! How could you be late to your marriage registration?”
“You can tell he’s not as rich as the bride from the fact that he arrived in a cab. The audacity to be tardy when he’s a social climber! There are lots of kept men these days, it seems.
A kept man?
Breathless with anger, Jeremy glowered at the young man who gossiped about him. The young man promptly shut up when he sensed Jeremy’s threatening vibe.
Alyssa and Jeremy sat side by side in front of the counter and turned in their marriage certificates and IDs. The staff checked the identification and coughed softly. “Don’t you want to think over your decision? It hasn’t been easy going through the ups and downs of life for three years.”
“We are not in need of money. He has a maid to cook for him and a secretary to arrange his business trips. He has no difficulties in his life,” Alyssa sneered.
Jeremy and the staff were at a loss of words. Alyssa checked her wristwatch and urged, “Please hurry up. I’m short on time.”
“I see that you do not have kids. Any assets that need redistribution?” the staff questioned.
Alyssa replied, “No.”
Sitting in silence, Jeremy had initially wanted to transfer some of his assets to her, but she insisted against it. Now that he looked at it, the amount of assets he offered Alyssa looked more like an affront to the daughter of the Taylor Family.
“Please sign here.” The staff handed them two forms. Alyssa signed the form without hesitation and turned to Jeremy.
To her surprise, he struggled to print his signature. Not only that, his fingers were trembling.
She frowned and wondered why he was shaking. “Just sign it! He’s not going to put on some separation drama, is he?” she wondered.
“Mr. Walsh, please sign it. Do you struggle with writing your name?”
Cold sweat broke out on his forehead. Jeremy grabbed his lower elbow on the right with his left hand but failed to stop the shaking. The ballpoint pen fell with a thud onto the floor.
Feeling odd, Alyssa finally paid him attention and checked him out. He looked pale, and his hair was a mess. She spotted dust on his black suit and some tear and wear near the lapel and shirt collar.
What was he up to before this? Why did he appear a little disheveled?
Puzzled, she picked up the pen and handed it to him.
Finally, the two forms were signed. The staff wrapped up the procedure, and the divorce was finalized.
“All the best to both of you.”
Staring at the divorce certificate as she left the city hall, she struggled to describe her feelings. They dragged out the divorce to the point that she had gotten over the initial heartache. More than anything, she felt a wave of relief.
She had once lived solely for love and learned her lesson. After reuniting with the Taylor family, her only wish was to focus on work and bring in the dough. There would be no place for men in her life.
“Mr. Walsh, I need to leave. Suit yourself.” She kept her certificate and left coolly.
“Wait, Alyssa-“
Right after that, she heard a dull thud on the floor. She spun around to meet with a horrifying scene. Jeremy had fallen off the stairs and was wincing on the ground. The staircase might be short, but the fall must have hurt.
“Jeremy!” She hurriedly helped him up from the floor and realized that his tremor had worsened.
“You’ve been acting weird from just now. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing
He refused to tell the truth even when his forehead was covered in sweat.
“Tell me the truth!” She sounded aggressive out of worry.
He felt pain in every part of his body, and his head was heavy. Still, he was touched by her show of concern. “Do you care about me?”
She snickered. “I will do the same to a dog by the street. I can’t sit back and do nothing when a fellow human being is suffering.”
