Filed to story: My Husband Regrets Divorcing Me (Audrey & Cornell)
Even if they did divorce one day, she would not be taking the child with her.
Audrey clenched her fists and spat out, “So you’re clinging to this marriage just for the baby, huh?”
Cornell stared at Audrey with a cold, piercing gaze and sensed that something was off.
With a scoff, Audrey bit her lower lip and dropped a bomb.
“If you don’t agree on the divorce, I’ll get an abortion.”
After saying these words, she silently reassured the tiny life inside her, “My baby, I would never abandon you. I’m just in so much pain.
I need to get away from your father. You understand, right?”
In that instant, Cornell’s eyes blazed with fury, and he bellowed.
“How dare you!”
“I won’t Let you control me anymore. This is my baby, and you don’t really have a choice here.”
Audrey was resolute in divorcing Cornell no matter what it took. She was setting herself up for heartbreak when she loved a man who always put her second fiddle. She did not want to get hurt again.
With his eyes ablaze with anger, Cornell lunged forward and grabbed Audrey’s wrist.
“I’ve told you before, Audrey. I’m not letting you go.
Not now, never.”
Outside the ward, with a basket of fruit in her hand, Cecilia trembled with anger.
It was one thing that her plot with Tessa of getting rid of Audrey’s baby had tanked. But now, Cornell knew the existence of the baby.
It had not been easy to keep Cornell by her side for three days. But when Cornell heard Audrey was in the hospital, he could not wait to fly back.
Today, when she Learned Audrey was in the hospital, Cecilia made a special trip here with the sole intent of getting under Audrey’s skin.
However, she did not expect to overhear Cornell and Audrey’s conversation.
Why did Cornell refuse to divorce Audrey?
As if that was not bad enough, Audrey seemed to suspect her.
Cecilia was boiling over. In a fit of anger, she chucked the fruit basket into a nearby trash can and was about to storm off.
However, Jocelyn stopped her.
“Leaving so soon?”
“Why should I stay? To watch Cornell decline the divorce with that bitch?” Cecilia retorted, her eyes red with jealousy and resentment.
“I want to rip that bitch to shreds, Jocelyn!”
Cecilia did not have to say the name of “that bitch” for Jocelyn to know.
“Calm down, my lady. I have an idea of how to deal with that woman,”
Jocelyn assured her.
“You do?”
“Do you remember Cornell’s stay at the branch office in Swynborough a few months back? He came to visit you once or twice during that period.”
Cecilia nodded. She remembered those hurried visits all too well.
Cornell was very busy. Therefore, he was always rushing, never lingering long.
Jocelyn’s eyes gleamed with sinister, and she explained, “So if we made Cornell get the wrong idea that Audrey got pregnant during that time, what do you think Cornell’s first thought would be?”
A smirk crept across Cecilia’s face. Cornell would undoubtedly think Audrey had been unfaithful.
“Do you really think this will work?” she hesitantly asked.
“Medical tech these days can tell you the baby’s hair color before it’s even born. Will Cornell really fall for this?”
Jocelyn eased her worries with a sly smile.
“ALL we need to do is sow a little doubt in Cornell’s mind. Even if they do a paternity test, it’ll take a while before the result comes out. Time will be in our favor. Regardless of the outcome, what’s there to lose?”
In a worst-case scenario, Audrey would give birth to the baby.
But pregnancy was not a walk in the park. A lot can happen in the long months leading up to childbirth. Nobody could guarantee Audrey’s safe pregnancy.
The two women exchanged knowing glances. It was like they were reading from the same twisted playbook.
Now feeling confident, Cecilia pulled out her phone and dialed a number. It was time to call in a favor from one of her dad’s acquaintances.
“Hi, it’s Cecilia. I know, I know. It’s been a while since we last talked. Listen, I’m at the hospital your family owns, and I was wondering if you could do me a little favor…”
As soon as Luciana stepped into the ward, she sensed the thick tension hanging in the air between Cornell and Audrey.
She was fuming with anger and could not resist the urge to scold Cornell.
“Audrey’s carrying your child, for heaven’s sake. Could you just stop fighting with her? Give her some space. Why don’t you go get the ultrasound report from the doctor?”
Luciana was quite perceptive. She knew all too well that men often did not pick up on emotional nuances as keenly as women did.
They had first learned about Audrey’s pregnancy through a blood test.
Later on, Luciana accompanied Audrey to get an ultrasound for a more detailed look.
Sending Cornell to fetch the ultrasound report was part of Luciana’s plan. She figured that seeing the baby’s image for himself would be a wake-up call for Cornell.
He would then surely regret giving Audrey a hard time.
Sensing Audrey’s discomfort, Cornell decided to stop the stalemate.
With that, he made his way to the doctor’s office to get the result.
The doctor handed over the ultrasound report and cautioned Cornell, “Your wife is 15 weeks pregnant, but the fetus’ development is slower than we’d like. It’s important you take excellent care of her, so both the mom and baby get the nutrients they need.”
Dumbstruck, Cornell looked the doctor in the eye and asked, “Wait. How far along is she again?”
The intensity of Cornell’s gaze made the doctor uneasy. The doctor quickly glanced at the report again and stuttered, “Fifteen weeks…”
Cornell unconsciously clenched his fists, and disbelief washed over his good-looking face.
How could Audrey be 15 weeks pregnant?
Cornell had a vivid memory. He had been swamped with work at the overseas branch and had not been intimate with Audrey for an entire month.
Back in the ward, Luciana was spooning some soup to Audrey. As Cornell walked in, she set the bowl aside and asked, “Did you get the result?”
“Yeah, I did,” Cornell answered, his voice chilly and tinged with sadness.
Luciana did not dwell on his mood, though. Excited, she stood up from her seat too quickly, which made her head spin. Thankfully, Cornell caught her just in time.
Luciana’s condition had been far from ideal, especially because she had been going through hoops to be by Audrey’s side. Therefore, Cornell arranged for someone to take Luciana home so she could rest.
However, Luciana refused to go back and insisted, “I have to be here to take care of Audrey.”
“Mom, I’ll take it from here,” Cornell asserted.
Luciana hoped Cornell and Audrey would reconcile, so she said nothing more and left the room.
But before she walked out of the door, Cornell said to her, “Mom, let’s keep the news about Audrey’s pregnancy from my grandpa for now.”
“Why?” Luciana queried, taken aback.
“He would be thrilled to know he’s going to be a great-grandfather soon.”
“Let’s just wait until Audrey’s condition is more stable.”
Luciana was hesitant for a while. Considering that Audrey was still early in her pregnancy, Cornell’s request seemed reasonable. At the thought of this, she gave a nod and left.
Meanwhile, Audrey was puzzled. She had assumed Cornell would want to share the news with Kyler, especially since Kyler would likely intervene to prevent them from getting a divorce.
She could not bear the thought of making Kyler depressed by knowing about their upcoming divorce.
Yet, she never expected Cornell would ask Luciana to keep the pregnancy a secret from Kyler.
At this moment, she could not tell what was going on in Cornell’s mind.
