Abigail didn’t respond. She leaned back against the edge of the tub, letting the chill seep into her skin as the heat in her body gradually died down.

After a while, the restlessness in her chest eased, her mind finally regaining clarity.

She stood up from the tub, her soaked clothes clinging tightly to her, outlining every curve of her figure.

Lucas quickly turned around, grabbed a towel from the nearby rack, and handed it to her without meeting her eyes.

“Wrap up. You’ll catch a cold,” he said, voice slightly hoarse.

Abigail took the towel and wrapped it around herself. It was only then that she noticed several of Lucas’s shirt buttons were undone, leaving his chest partially exposed. There were faint red marks scattered across his skin.

Marks she had made during the heat of the drug’s effect.

Her ears instantly turned red, and for a moment, she thought the drug still hadn’t worn off.

She awkwardly rubbed her nose. “Sorry…”

“Mm.” Lucas gave a vague nod and left the bathroom.

Wrapped in the towel, Abigail thought back on how careless she’d been today – actually falling into Helen and Mandy’s trap.

Her gaze turned cold. She would remember this. And repay it.

When she stepped back out, Lucas had already changed into a fresh set of clothes. He handed her a clean outfit of his own. “It’s new. Go change into this for now.”

“Thanks.” Abigail didn’t bother pretending to be shy. She took the clothes and returned to the bathroom.

By the time she came back out, Lucas had already brewed tea.

He glanced up. Abigail was wearing his pajamas. The oversized clothes drooped off her frame, the sleeves and pant legs rolled up several times. She looked like a kid playing dress-up – oddly cute.

Abigail sat cross-legged across from him, watching his graceful fingers hold the teacup as he poured. The sight was unexpectedly pleasing.

“Drink some tea to warm up.” Lucas gently placed the cup in front of her.

Abigail finally tore her gaze away from his hand, picked up the cup, and took a sip. The warmth flowed down her throat, chasing the cold from her body.

Lucas frowned, clearly disapproving. “You knew the Gibson family had bad intentions. Why would you still go to a hotel with her? And you know medicine – why didn’t you recognize what was happening and detox yourself?”

Abigail tilted her head and looked at him, hearing the concern buried in his words. “I was confident they couldn’t beat me. I just didn’t expect them to use an aphrodisiac instead of poison.”

It wasn’t poison, which was exactly why she’d fallen for it.

She took another sip of tea and continued, “That kind of drug has no taste or smell. It’s not technically poison, so unless… well, there’s no easy antidote.”

Lucas stared at her seriously, his tone firm and unyielding. “I’m not gonna take advantage of you. And this time, you got played.”

Thinking back to her behavior earlier, his face darkened even more. “And if you realized you were drugged, you should’ve kicked me out of the room immediately. How could you… how could you just… Anyway, you should’ve focused on protecting yourself.”

Listening to him speak, Abigail suddenly felt like she was being lectured by a father scolding his daughter.

She blinked twice and offered an explanation. “I only had a little bit. If I just rode it out, the effects would pass quickly.”

Then she muttered under her breath, “If it had been anyone else, I would’ve thrown them out already.”

“Even if it was me, that’s still not okay!” Lucas snapped, clearly agitated.

Abigail didn’t understand why he was suddenly so fired up. She didn’t even realize how telling her words had been – she had only let him stay. If it had been any other man, she really would’ve thrown them out without hesitation.

Lucas also realized he’d overreacted. He cleared his throat and was just about to say something else when a knock came from the door.

He let out a quiet sigh of relief and stood to answer it. Halfway there, he glanced back at Abigail to make sure she was fully dressed before opening the door.

Abigail remained oblivious, pouring herself another cup of tea. Lucas really did live up to his ethereal reputation – even his tea tasted better than anyone else’s.

Back on the mountain, her master had always been fond of tea, but she’d hated it. She used to get scolded for not appreciating it.

If it were Lucas brewing it, her master probably would’ve approved.

From outside the door came the sound of voices. Abigail recognized one of them – it was Andrew.

She caught snippets like “reporters… dealt with…”

After Andrew’s report, a chilling aura radiated off Lucas, making Andrew shiver despite himself.

“How did those reporters find out?” Lucas’s voice was low and tight, like the heavy air before a storm.

Andrew lowered his head, not daring to meet his gaze. “We’re still investigating, but early signs suggest someone from the Gibson family leaked it on purpose.”

The Gibson family really had the guts to try using him. They must have a death wish.

Even Andrew could see what they were up to. Of course Lucas already had it figured out. They wanted to use compromising photos to threaten him.

And they didn’t even hesitate to drug their own flesh and blood.

The thought that Abigail, like him, had been betrayed by her own family, filled Lucas with rage – and a deep ache.

With a single gesture, he could crush the Gibson family. But this was Abigail’s fight. She had her own plans. He had to respect that.

After a moment of silence, he said, “You don’t need to get involved in the Gibson family business just yet. I remember the main branch was very interested in that land near Southville.”

“Yes,” Andrew replied. “They’ve been planning to build a large theme park there.”

He knew all of Stonebridge’s developments like the back of his hand. That particular lot had been dismissed by their team as too small to bother with.

“What a coincidence,” Lucas said with a glint in his eye and a faint smirk. “I’m suddenly very interested in that land too.”

The second Andrew saw that smile, he knew the Gibson main branch was in serious trouble.

From what he knew, they were banking heavily on that piece of land – so much so that they’d halted a highly profitable project just to focus on it. If they failed to secure the Southville site, this year would be a catastrophic loss.

But really, that had nothing to do with them. They only had themselves to blame for being weak.

“I’ll take care of it right away.” Andrew had never shown mercy to anyone who dared to scheme against Lucas.

Just as he was about to leave, he paused. “Ms. Gibson’s mother was outside earlier, screaming and making a scene. I was worried she’d get too hysterical… so I knocked her out.”
