From the sound alone, Abigail could tell it was a young man.
The steps paused just beyond the threshold. Then, with a low creak, the door opened.
She timed it perfectly, her body a blur as she lunged at the shadow in the doorway.
But the man was prepared. He sidestepped her effortlessly, spun, and countered with a sharp chop toward her neck.
Abigail arched back like a bow, narrowly avoiding the strike with a graceful twist.
In the dark, their bodies moved like streaks of shadow, fists slicing through the air. Abigail was stunned. The man’s movements were fast, aggressive, and sharp. Every strike was precise and ruthless. He’s highly trained.
The shadow was equally surprised. He hadn’t expected the room’s occupant to have such speed and skill. Her fighting was controlled, fast, and lethal.
They traded blows in a flurry – each seeking an opening.
At last, they both struck at the same moment, each hand closing around the other’s throat.
Caught in a deadlock, Abigail’s ring shifted slightly – releasing a hidden needle with a faint metallic click.
In the faint glow from the hallway, the man caught the glint of the blade. Alarmed, he blurted out her name. “Abigail?”
Her eyes widened at the familiar voice. “Lucas?”
They both let go at once.
Click. Lucas turned on the lights. Abigail winced at the sudden brightness and narrowed her eyes against it.
They locked eyes – and spoke at the same time.
“What are you doing here?”
Lucas looked her up and down, confirming she wasn’t hurt, then said, “I had a meeting scheduled here to talk business.”
Abigail gave a slow nod, piecing it all together. “I see.”
Earlier that day, the Gibson family had tried to force her into asking Lucas for help. When she refused, they set this trap instead – drugging her and delivering her straight to his hotel room.
But what role had Mandy played in all this?
Lucas raised an eyebrow, silently watching her.
Suddenly, Abigail leaned forward and hooked her finger around his tie, giving it a slight tug.
Lucas leaned in under the pressure, their faces drawing close in an instant, their breaths brushing together, warm and intimate.
Abigail’s fingers traced lazy circles on the front of his shirt, the movement slow and teasing.
A strange tingling shot through Lucas’s chest like an electric current, making his gaze darken instantly. One look into her clear eyes, and he knew – she was doing this on purpose.
He frowned slightly, voice low and gentle. “What happened?”
Lucas’s voice was rich and velvety, smooth as aged wine. When it reached her ears, Abigail felt like her eardrums were melting.
She smiled faintly, though her eyes remained cold. “Nothing. The Gibson family couldn’t pressure me into going willingly, so they decided to gift-wrap me and drop me off in your bed to win your favor – and get you to save their precious son.”
Seeing the icy chill in her eyes, Lucas felt a deep, protective tug in his chest. An unfamiliar ache bloomed inside him.
He raised a hand and gently stroked the top of her head, his touch as careful as if he were calming a wounded creature.
Abigail froze slightly. For a second, it reminded her of her master, and her nose stung with sudden emotion.
She blinked hard, forcing back the moisture welling in her eyes. Then she slapped his hand away. “I’m not a child.”
She stepped back, trying to put some space between them – but her foot landed on the pen holder that had fallen during the earlier fight. She lost her balance and tipped backward.
Her eyes went wide in alarm, hands instinctively flailing for support.
Lucas reacted in a flash. He reached out and caught her waist – but the momentum was too much, and he lost his balance too.
With a heavy thud, they both fell onto the bed. Lucas held her protectively in his arms, her back sinking into the plush mattress. His arms braced on either side of her, their faces just inches apart.
Abigail looked up – and found herself locked in his deep, worried gaze. Their breaths tangled in the tight space between them, warm and uneven.
She raised a hand to push him off – but when her hand landed on his shoulder, she suddenly pulled him down instead.
Caught off guard, Lucas was pulled straight into her. Their bodies pressed fully together.
Then a pair of scorching hot hands boldly slipped under his shirt, roaming freely across his skin. At the same time, Abigail burrowed into his arms, pawing open his collar and nuzzling her face against his chest.
Lucas jolted, startled. But he quickly realized something was wrong. Her cheeks were burning, her eyes unfocused, her breathing fast and laced with an involuntary moan.
She’d been drugged.
Before he could decide what to do, her burning face nuzzled into his neck and she murmured, “So cool… Feels nice…”
Her hot breath fanned across his ear. Lucas’s eyes darkened further. He was just about to raise his hand to knock her out –
But Abigail grabbed his wrist, clinging to him as she pressed closer, mumbling, “Just a little longer… let me stay like this… just a little…”
Lucas narrowed his eyes. Her voice sounded almost too clear.
At that moment, noise broke out outside the door, but Lucas ignored it.
His head was pounding thanks to Abigail’s antics. He wrapped an arm around her waist and scooped her up off the bed.
Abigail kept squirming in his arms, her hands clinging tightly to his neck, her legs clamped around his waist, still muttering in a daze.
Lucas’s expression was as black as ink – worried sick about her, and furious at her nonsense all at once.
The moment they stepped into the bathroom, Lucas turned on the cold water and pried Abigail off him. He pulled her straight into the tub.
Cold water soaked her clothes instantly. Abigail shivered, and her dazed eyes began to clear.
“Lucas…” she murmured softly, still with a hint of sweetness in her voice.
Lucas crouched down, held her by the shoulders, and said helplessly, “Just sit still and stay in the water.”
