Basking in the admiration and envy of others, Daniella walked with a newfound air of arrogance.

Early morning at the Gibson family breakfast table…

“Dani, there’s only a week left until school starts. I’ve already asked Molly to pack your things. When the time comes, Adrian will take you to campus.” Helen said, her heart swelling with pride as she looked at the brilliant daughter she had so carefully nurtured.

Boone and Conrad immediately jumped in.

“I’ll take Dani too!”

“How could I miss sending Dani off on her first day?”

Daniella shot Abigail a smug glance and pretended to suddenly remember. “Oh right, what about Abigail?”

Boone wrinkled his nose in disdain. “Her? She’s useless. Better for her to stay home and not embarrass the Gibson family.”

Conrad chimed in, “Exactly. What school would even want someone like her?”

Abigail felt her appetite vanish; even her favorite butter bun tasted like ash.

Couldn’t these people let me eat in peace for once?

Hearing the conversation, Marshall grew pensive. “It would be an embarrassment for the Gibson family to have a daughter with only a middle school education. I know Mr. Ray of St. Fortuna. I’ll pull some strings and get her in there.”

Daniella’s eyes lit up at the mention of St. Fortuna. It was a private school in Stonebridge where spoiled rich kids with no academic merit went to scrape by.

Marshall turned to Abigail and warned, “I don’t expect you to learn anything. Just stay quiet and graduate without causing trouble.”

“You should be thanking Father,” Daniella added sweetly. “You finally get to go back to school!”

Abigail slammed her chopsticks onto the table and stood up. “I’ll handle my schooling myself. I don’t need your charity.”

Conrad bristled at her attitude. “Too good for St. Fortuna? What, you think you can get into Stonebridge University?”

Abigail turned her head slightly, her gaze icy. “And what if I do?”

The room fell dead silent for a moment, then erupted into laughter.

Boone laughed so hard he almost fell out of his chair. “You? Get into Stonebridge University? That place is packed with the country’s top students! You, who didn’t even finish high school, have the nerve to talk big?”

Daniella almost burst out laughing, but she managed to hold it in. “Abigail, you’ve been stuck in that little corner all these years, so you probably don’t know that Stonebridge University is the top university in Stonebridge. It’s not just something anyone can get into. Besides, the admissions exam for Stonebridge University is already over.”

Adrian, who had been silent until now, narrowed his eyes. “Unless… you’re thinking of taking the special admissions exam?”

Conrad scoffed. “As if she could get a special slot.”

Daniella seemed to be deep in thought. She bit her lip and asked, “Abigail, you didn’t, did you? Ask Mr. Hawthorne for a special admissions spot at the birthday banquet.

Conrad’s smile froze on his face. If Lucas intervened, it really would not be a big deal.

Daniella wore an expression as if she wanted to say something but hesitated, then softly added, “Abigail, you… you didn’t lose out, did you?”

She was subtly implying that Abigail had used her charms to please Lucas in exchange for the special admissions spot.

Boone sneered openly. “Shameless.”

Looking at their ugly faces, Abigail felt disgusted. “Think whatever you want. But remember this. Whatever I want, I fight for it myself. I don’t need to rely on anyone else.”

Then, she turned and left the dining room, leaving the Gibson family stunned.

Watching her retreating figure, Daniella’s eyes gleamed with resentment. “Father, you really should keep a closer eye on Abigail. If she stirs up trouble… and the family suffers…”

Marshall’s face darkened at her words. Now that the engagement with Lucas had boosted his standing within the family, he could not afford for anything or anyone to jeopardize his plans.

The day of Stonebridge University’s special admissions exam arrived.

Abigail packed her things and got ready to leave, only to find that her door would not open.

No matter how hard she twisted the doorknob, it refused to budge. She quickly realized that someone had locked it from the outside.

Sure enough, she soon heard Daniella’s mocking voice from beyond the door. “Abigail, don’t waste your energy. Father had the door locked. You’re not going anywhere today.”

Even if she did not truly believe Abigail could pass the exam, Daniella was not about to take any chances.

Once it was confirmed that Abigail wasn’t getting out, Daniella happily dressed up and headed out the door looking gorgeous.

Inside, Abigail let out a cold laugh. Marshall really thought a tiny little lock could stop her? Dream on.

Meanwhile, Quinn was outside in the yard, directing the gardeners on trimming the flowers and bushes, when he vaguely heard strange sounds coming from upstairs.

He frowned and paused, glancing suspiciously in the direction of Abigail’s room.

Before he could make sense of it, a loud crash erupted – like something heavy had collapsed.

Heart racing, Quinn dashed upstairs.

The moment he reached the second floor, he saw Abigail stepping calmly out of her room. The door that had been tightly shut was now wrecked – its lock twisted, the frame cracked in several places, wood chips scattered all over the floor.

Quinn’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Ms. Gibson, what… what are you doing?”

“Breaking the door down. What does it look like?” Abigail said indifferently, lifting her foot to head downstairs.

Snapping out of his daze, Quinn rushed forward and spread his arms to block her path. “Ms. Gibson, you can’t leave. This was Ms. Marshall’s order.”

Abigail’s gaze instantly turned icy. She lifted her hand and gave him a light push. Quinn weighed over a hundred pounds, yet his body hit the floor hard. Even more unnerving – he couldn’t move at all.

Abigail stepped over him and walked downstairs.

It wasn’t until she was completely out of sight that Quinn slowly began to regain feeling in his limbs. But by then, it was far too late to catch her.

Abigail opened the car door and climbed in, her face stone-cold.

Samson was busy preening in the rearview mirror when he saw her sour expression. He let out a whistle and grinned. “Who ticked you off? Want me to handle it?”

Lucas had told him to get Abigail safely to the exam hall.

Abigail shot him a look, swallowed her fury, and said simply, “Marshall locked me in my room. She tried to stop me from taking the test.”
