Just as neither knew how to break the moment, Sarah called from outside the door, “Mr. Myers, Mrs. Myers has returned.”
“Understood.” The moment Carter heard this, he released Isabella’s hand and quickly put distance between them.
Isabella watched as Carter deliberately stepped away, and she could barely conceal the flicker of frustration in her eyes.
“Carter, Victoria is back. She must be – “
“I told you,” Carter cut in as he finished changing, his expression cooling. “She was just letting off steam after holding it in for so long. Now that she’s gotten it out of her system, of course she’d come back.” He straightened his clothes and added coldly, “If she’s willing to humble herself and apologize, I might let it slide this time. But mark my words – there won’t be a next time.”
With that, he strode out of the room.
Isabella stood frozen, replaying Carter’s words. Her expression gradually hardened.
He’s going to forgive her that easily?
Unconsciously clenching her fists, she hurried out after him.
Down in the living room, Victoria sat gracefully on the sofa, a cup of coffee – freshly made by Sarah – resting in front of her.
When Carter entered, this was the scene that greeted him – Victoria looking completely at ease. He couldn’t help but recall how she used to constantly busy herself with household chores, always making sure everything was prepared for his return, even personally serving his juice and coffee.
But now, there was a new coolness about her, as if she were a completely different person.
Sarah noticed Carter and greeted him respectfully, “Mr. Myers!”
Carter gave a slight nod, then turned his gaze to Victoria. He cleared his throat pointedly, signaling his presence. Yet even after he came downstairs, Victoria didn’t so much as glance his way, treating him as if he were invisible.
She came back on her own – she must be here to apologize. But if she knew she was wrong, why acted like this?
Carter sat down directly across from her, straightening his posture and crossing his legs, adopting an air of detached authority.
“So, you’ve finally decided to come back!”
Hearing his voice, Victoria finally looked up and met his eyes. “I’m here to talk.”
A smirk tugged at Carter’s lips. “So you admit you were wrong?”
“Wrong?” Victoria let out a soft, derisive laugh. “Carter, are you still half-asleep?”
Carter froze, ready to retort, but before he could, Victoria tossed a stack of papers right in front of him.
He snatched them up. Seeing it was another divorce agreement, his temper flared.
“Victoria, what is this supposed to mean?” Carter shot to his feet, all composure gone. Just moments ago, he’d dressed carefully, convinced she had returned to apologize. Now, standing there furious, he looked more foolish than dignified.
“Carter, did you forget what you said last night at Eve Restaurant?” Victoria kept her voice low but firm. “You made a promise. If you don’t sign this now, you’re nothing but a coward.”
“You…” The humiliating scene from the previous night flashed in Carter’s mind. He couldn’t believe she was using that against him now, and it infuriated him even more.
This woman just doesn’t know when to quit, does she? Always making a big deal out of nothing, always looking for a fight.
“Daddy Carter…” a small voice chirped.
Just then, Jenarth ran over and leaped into Carter’s arms, with Isabella following closely behind.
Victoria’s gaze swept past Isabella and Jenarth before locking back on Carter. “I’m not staying here to be an eyesore any longer. Just sign the papers, Carter. My lawyer is waiting outside.”
Carter’s eyes instinctively darted toward the entrance. Realizing what he was doing, his expression darkened with anger. “That’s enough, Victoria! You are my wife – the lady of the Myers family. This little performance of yours has gone far enough.”
“The title of ‘lady of the Myers family’ means nothing to me,” Victoria retorted, her voice icy. “In my world, I don’t put up with nonsense. And you – you’re the embodiment of it.” She didn’t even glance toward Isabella and Jenarth as she spoke.
“Go on, Carter. Sign it. I’m sure there’s no shortage of women eager to take my place.”
Isabella stepped forward, voice trembling slightly. “Ms. Lewis, you’ve misunderstood… There’s nothing between Carter and me. He’s only helping me because I saved him once, and now I’m in a difficult situation…”
“Did I ask you?” Victoria cut in, her tone sharp and her eyes cold.
Isabella lowered her head, looking as if she were on the verge of tears.
Watching Victoria treat Isabella so harshly, Carter lost his temper. “Victoria, you’re being completely unreasonable. Robert is my son. I won’t allow you to drag him into your theatrics.”
“Robert is old enough to decide for himself who he wants to be with. If you want to fight me for custody, go ahead. But I wonder how some people would feel about that.” As she spoke, her eyes drifted meaningfully toward Isabella and Jenarth.
“Since when did you become so vicious, Victoria? Was the person you used to be just an act?” Carter demanded, disbelief written across his face.
“You finally understand, Carter. The woman you thought you knew never existed. Remember this – this is who I really am.” A cold smile touched her lips. “Now sign. Unless you’re a coward.”
Coward – that word again.
Carter’s anger boiled over. The woman standing before him was all defiance, openly challenging him and making a scene in his own home. This was the simple country girl Charles had chosen for him? What a cruel joke.
He let out a bitter laugh. How ironic.
Fury surged through him. Seeing how determined she was, he sneered, “Fine. Since you’re begging for it, I’ll give you exactly what you want.”
He snatched the divorce agreement and skimmed through the terms. Victoria wasn’t asking for a single penny – only the small inheritance left by her mother. To anyone else, it looked like she was getting the short end of the stick. If she had demanded half of his assets, she would have walked away with billions of dollars.
There’s no way she’s really leaving empty-handed, Carter thought. This has to be some kind of act – a backup plan. She’ll probably come crawling back in a few days, begging to stay.
“Let me make one thing clear,” he warned, pen in hand, his eyes fixed on her. “Once you walk out of the Myers family, don’t expect to ever come back.”
“Stop wasting my time. Just sign it,” Victoria shot back, not even bothering to look at him.
Her relentless attitude pushed Carter over the edge. How did she become so ruthless?
“Carter, please, don’t be rash,” Isabella pleaded, stepping forward as if to take his hand. “If this is because of me, I’ll leave with Jenarth right now. You two shouldn’t – “
“Enough!” Carter roared, cutting her off. Without another word, he scrawled his signature across the divorce papers.
A flicker of triumph passed through Isabella’s eyes as she watched him sign.
For Victoria, it was as if a heavy weight had finally been lifted.
Once he finished, Carter slammed the documents onto the table.
“Remember this, Victoria. You’re the one who asked for this. Once you step out that door, you are no longer part of the Myers family. Even if you come begging on your knees, I won’t take you back.”
Victoria remained utterly unfazed by his outburst. She picked up the signed papers gracefully, a faint, cool smile playing on her lips. “Thank you, Mr. Myers. I wish you and your beloved a happy life together… and plenty of children.”
“You – !” Carter exploded, but Victoria had already turned and walked away without a backward glance.
Sarah, who had been standing nearby, hurried over as Victoria moved to leave. “Mrs. Myers, I’ve packed all your belongings. Should I – “
“Let her go!” Carter barked.
Victoria glanced at Sarah and smiled lightly. “I’ve told you before, Sarah – those things are just junk. You can throw them all away.” With that, she walked out, head held high, without another word.
