Hearing his voice, Victoria set down the cup and met his gaze. “Do me a favor and sign this first.” She pulled a document from a folder and slid it across the table – the divorce agreement.
Carter’s eyes fell on the title, and his expression instantly turned to ice.
“You’re really going through with this?” He snatched the papers, skimmed through them, and frowned. “Are you done with this act? There’s nothing between me and Isabella. Do you have to make a scene everywhere – first the airport, now at home?”
“If we’re divorcing, why bother with the setup? I’ve already signed. Review the terms. If everything’s acceptable, sign it.” Her tone was calm and detached, devoid of any emotion – as if she were discussing something that had nothing to do with her.
Carter didn’t even bother reading the document. He tossed it back onto the table, his voice cold. “You think you can just walk away whenever you want? I’m the CEO of Myers Group. You’re the CEO’s wife – a divorce involves complex interests. Not to mention the impact on the group’s – “
Before he could finish, Victoria cut him off.
“Funny. I don’t want a single thing from you. Not a cent of your family’s money. I only want what’s rightfully mine.” Her voice remained steady. “It’s clearly stated in the last clause – all I want is the 180 million dollars my mom left me. Your grandpa made it clear before – that money was set aside for me before my mom passed. No matter what, it belongs to me.”
For a moment, Carter was taken aback by her refusal of the Myers family fortune, but he quickly composed himself.
He controlled assets worth billions of dollars, and here was Victoria claiming she didn’t want any of it? Impossible. She kept emphasizing her mom’s money, but compared to his wealth, that amount was trivial. She ought to know better.
She was just putting on a show – trying to get his attention.
Over the years, she had always played the part of the CEO’s wife dutifully – staying out of the public eye, never interfering in his affairs, focusing solely on raising their child.
Victoria had always been sensible – the ideal wife.
Charles adored her.
Clearly, she was protesting his lack of attention.
“Isabella’s health isn’t good. She has a chronic condition and needs constant medication. Raising a child alone hasn’t been easy for her.” Carter paused, then added solemnly. “Back then, I nearly died in that accident. Isabella risked her life to save me. I owe her.”
Victoria watched his performance of unwavering loyalty and almost laughed aloud.
How easily those cold, cruel words rolled off his tongue. The mistake had been hers – she had been blind enough to bind herself to him in marriage.
“You don’t owe me any explanations. The moment I said it’s over, it’s over. Carter, now that your dream girl is back, I’m making room for both of you. You should be thanking me.” She pushed the divorce papers back toward him. “Just sign it. I’m sure she’s waiting for you to finalize this.”
“Victoria! That’s enough!” Carter snapped.
He was furious. He stared at her, searching her calm face for any trace of anger. He had expected an explosion, but all he found was icy resolve.
For the first time, a voice in his head screamed – She isn’t bluffing. She really wants a divorce…
Victoria had always been the picture of compliance – the dutiful wife who never questioned his comings and goings. So why did she suddenly feel like a complete stranger?
Carter took a steadying breath, forcing his tone into something more measured. “I’ll admit, I’ve been preoccupied with the company and haven’t given you the attention you deserve. I’ll do better.” He softened his voice further, pushing the designer bag toward her. “This is the latest limited edition – I bought it just for you. If there’s anything else you want, just get it.” As he spoke, Carter produced a card from his wallet and set it before Victoria – a supplementary card linked to his primary account with no spending limit.
This was Carter’s idea of a peace offering. When it came to finances, he’d never been stingy with her. In many ways, Victoria had been the ideal wife – quiet, undemanding, never making scenes.
Throwing tantrums simply wasn’t in her nature.
Carter’s brow furrowed slightly, genuine irritation flickering in his eyes.
“Carter, I think you’re missing the point.” Victoria looked at him, her beautiful eyes cold and detached. “I’m not here to negotiate. I’m officially notifying you – you’re out of my life for good!”
That was the last straw for Carter.
“Victoria, don’t push me. Isabella saved my life. I’m your husband. Is this how my wife treats the person who saved me? Picking fights over every little thing, incapable of showing an ounce of generosity. Aren’t you worried what people will say if this gets out?”
He slammed his palm on the table, the sound echoing through the room. It was the first time in years he’d raised his voice at her.
Victoria studied his furious expression and actually smiled. “I don’t owe Isabella a thing. Why should I be generous? Who is she to me? You want me to worship her? Fine – when she’s dead, I’ll put up a memorial tablet for her.”
“Aren’t you afraid people will call you petty and say you’re unfit to be the CEO’s wife?” Carter was barely containing his rage.
Watching how easily Carter flew into a rage over Isabella, Victoria felt a bitter irony. So this was his true love. For six years, she had stood by his side as his wife. Carter had only married her because Charles insisted, and because she was pregnant. He’d arranged for someone to look after her while he buried himself in work. Those very years had seen his company rise to become the most powerful conglomerate in Capaville.
They’d probably had fewer conversations during their entire marriage than they’d had today.
“Word gets out?” Victoria’s lips curved into a mocking smile. “Even if it does, I won’t be the one who’s embarrassed.”
“Victoria… Don’t go too far.” Carter’s voice boomed through the room. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles cracked.
Noticing Robert coming down the stairs from the corner of her eye, Victoria lowered her voice. “That’s all I have to say. I’ve already signed the papers. If you want to keep this civil, just sign them. If not, my lawyer will be in touch.”
With that, she stood up. The moment she decided she no longer wanted Carter, he became nothing to her.
Now, Robert was her only concern.
“Victoria! Don’t blow this out of proportion. You want a divorce over something so trivial? You’re being unreasonable! If you actually go through with this, do you think you’ll survive out there? Don’t forget who you are.” Carter grabbed her wrist.
He was reminding her – Victoria was just a country girl who’d been brought back to play the role of a wealthy heiress. If she stopped being the CEO’s wife and returned to her family, what would become of her?
Hearing this, Victoria’s eyes darkened. She looked down at Carter’s hand gripping her wrist, the pressure already turning her skin red.
Carter!
If he had been a good husband, she would have endured anything to be the perfect wife. But since he wasn’t, why waste another breath on him?
She was just calculating how much force it would take to break free when Carter’s phone rang, shattering the tense silence.
Carter’s expression shifted. He released her wrist and answered the call.
Isabella’s name flashed on the screen. His eyes darkened as he picked up.
“It’s me. What’s wrong?” The man who had been furious moments now spoke with gentle concern.
“Carter, Jenarth just fainted. I can’t wake him up, I don’t know what to do… Carter… I’m so scared…” Isabella’s voice trembled with tears.
The living room was so quiet Victoria could hear every word. Isabella certainly knew how to pick her moment.
Carter had barely been home a few minutes, right in the middle of their argument. With Victoria present, anyone who needed to hear would hear. This call was perfectly timed – she knew exactly what she was doing.
“Carter, my Jenarth… He’s completely unresponsive… He’s always been sickly, what if something happens… Ah… I’m so terrified!” Isabella’s sobs grew more desperate.
“Isabella, don’t panic. I’ll call the doctor right now.” Carter’s voice was thick with worry. “Hold on, I’m coming over.”
He hung up, glanced at Victoria – who was calmly observing his every move – and said sternly, “Stop making a scene, alright? Let’s leave it here. Something’s wrong with Isabella. Jenarth is only five, he has a heart condition and can’t handle stress. Isabella’s raising him alone – she’s exhausted and has no one to turn to. She needs someone right now. I have to go.”
Without another word, Carter turned and strode out.
As he left, Robert reached the bottom of the stairs. Carter glanced at him, offered no acknowledgment, and hurried away.
Robert watched Carter’s retreating back and snorted. “Even the oldest tricks from a scheming woman can lead him around by the nose. Thank goodness the universe had mercy and he’s not my dad. What a joke!”
Victoria looked at the empty doorway where Carter had vanished and let out a cold laugh.
Carter, this is your choice. Go be with your ‘true love’. May you be happily entangled for life.
