Evelyn’s POV

I lashed out, fists and feet flying in a frenzy. Each strike, each blow was raw, full of pent-up fury that I could no longer hold back. I lost count of how many times my fists collided with her, how many kicks I landed. All I knew was the force, the savage satisfaction of finally being able to act on the rage that had been festering inside me for so long.

I grabbed Sophia’s perfectly styled hair and yanked her head back, slamming my fist into her face again and again. Her screams were like music to my ears.

“Does this feel like a dying old dog gasping for air, Sophia? Pretty pathetic, huh?” I hissed in her ear, twisting her hair so tightly I thought it might come out in my hands.

She gasped, her face flushed with realization.”Evelyn, you’re insane!”

I smirked through the fury burning in me, my chest heaving with every breath. This wasn’t about the slap anymore, it was about avenging kate. This was about throwing those cruel words she had spoken back in her face. The words that had broken me.

I grabbed her face and delivered a final, resounding slap. The force of it left her dazed, and I could see her confusion, the shock in her eyes as it came alive with her wolf.

Before I could do anything more, Margaret rushed in to intervene, her eyes immediately locking on Declan, full of fear and unease. She reached out, trying to pull me away from Sophia, but Declan was quicker.

He snapped out of the shock he had been in and moved to separate us, instinctively pulling me behind him like I was some fragile thing he needed to shield. His grip was cold, firm on my wrists, holding me back.

I wasn’t unscathed. My hair was a mess, wild and untamed, the white mask I’d worn slipping off, revealing the scar on my face. Even though it had faded over time, up close, it was still clearly visible. And now, as I stood there, Declan holding me, I couldn’t help but wonder if he saw it as a weakness.

Ignoring him, I kept my eyes cold as I locked onto Margaret and Sophia, watching them closely. My gaze never wavered.

Margaret froze as her eyes locked onto my scarred face. I could see the shock in her eyes.

Sophia, dazed from the beating, finally came to her senses, her eyes blazing with shock and fury. She didn’t even register her own fear before she spat,”You dared hit me?”

Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face twisted in anger.

While Margaret was distracted, Sophia lunged. Her sharp claws aimed straight for my scarred face, her expression vicious, like she wanted to ruin me once and for all.

I braced myself at Declan’s side. My hands were still restrained by his grip, my body tense, my eyes shut, preparing for the blow I couldn’t dodge. This is it.

But then, nothing came.

Instead of the sharp pain I expected, I heard the dull thud of a slap against fabric, followed by a muffled grunt above me. I opened my eyes, and my stomach dropped.

Declan. He had stepped in front of me.

Sophia’s eyes widened in disbelief.”Declan, why… why would you…”

I could feel my spine stiffen, my body frozen in shock. Why would he do that? Why would he shield me?

Before I could process what was happening, Declan’s calm, shadowed voice cut through the air, his tone colder than I had ever heard it.”Sophia, is it worth getting worked up over a lunatic?”

A bitter scoff slipped from my lips, like a curse I couldn’t swallow back. A”lunatic,” Declan had called me that.

The funny thing though is, If I were a lunatic, then what did that make him?

My eyes flickered briefly, but it quickly dulled, swallowed by a hollow, empty darkness. I let it consume me. What else was there to feel, after everything?

I let the mocking smile curl on my lips, the only sign that I was still here, still alive, still breathing. But beyond that, I gave him nothing. No reaction. As if I hadn’t been slapped. As if his so-called protection meant nothing to me.

The shadow above me shifted, and Declan’s grip tightened on my wrist again, pulling me toward him. This time, there was no subtlety in his touch, he held me as if I were a ragdoll, his fingers crushing my bones, the pressure sharp and unforgiving. It felt like he could shatter me with just one more squeeze.

I tugged twice, testing the strength of his grip, but he wouldn’t let go. My wolf snarled at the weakness and helplessness in my struggle.

My eyes locked onto his, icy and deep, like the frigid waters of an arctic sea.

His gaze lingered on the red marks blooming across my cheek, those marks left by Margaret’s hand and Sophia’s.

Then his voice sliced through the air, low and commanding.”Apologize to Sophia.”

Evelyn’s POV

Declan’s words were rich, layered with authority, but they were cruel, almost like a blade pressed to my skin, waiting to draw blood.

His voice echoed in my mind, repeating those words over and over, like a drumbeat I couldn’t escape.

Apologize to Sophia?

A sharp laugh escaped me, cutting through the silence.”Never.”

I couldn’t stop the bitterness in my voice, the venom that seeped out with every word.”I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize? She’s the one who hit me. Just because you’re Declan? Does that give you the right to demand I grovel to her, no questions asked?”

I was done. Done with all of them. I wasn’t going to beg a homewrecker. The fault wasn’t mine. It was hers. It was always hers.

I didn’t bother hiding the sarcasm in my voice. I let it drip with every word. I could see it in Declan’s eyes, the way the storm was building, the way his gaze turned colder with every second at my words.

Sophia, still seething with rage, tugged delicately at Declan’s sleeve, her voice sweet and pleading.”Declan, you’ve got to back me up here. She tried to hit me first, and now she won’t even apologize. A year in prison, and she’s still so cold and twisted. No wonder she betrayed you back then.”

Her words hit their mark. I could feel them sink into Declan, could see the way they landed with precision. The words were designed to hurt him, to cut through him. She knew exactly what she was doing.

And it worked. His gaze turned frigid, colder than it had been before, as if he had built a wall of ice between us. His eyes pierced through me like icy blades, cutting to the bone. The storm that had been brewing in him was no longer just a flicker, it was a blizzard, freezing everything in its path.

My glare was laser-focused on Sophia, and my fist clenched tighter at my side, my nails biting into my palm. My wolf rumbled, her hunger to attack growing by the second.

I held Sophia with my eyes, pinning her down until she finally looked away, guilt flickering across her face.

“Oh, right. Should I be thanking you two for putting me in prison?” I asked, my voice as cold and sharp as steel.

My question caught Declan off guard, and for a brief moment, his grip on my wrist loosened. I could feel it, the hesitation in him, like maybe-just maybe-he was second-guessing something.

Seizing the moment, I yanked my arm free from his grasp and turned, storming upstairs with a speed that surprised even me. My heart pounded in my chest, but it wasn’t fear. It was rage. The door slammed behind me with a sharp crack, the sound reverberating through the manor like an explosion.

Moments later, I opened the door again with a soft click. Declan was now seated on the sofa, his brow furrowed slightly. Sophia and Margaret hovered around him, their voices hushed as they all watched me emerge from my room, dragging my suitcase behind me, its wheels scraping across the floor like the sound of my heart.

I got down the stairs and passed Declan without a glance. I paused by Margaret, just for a moment, my gaze cold and sharp.

“No one touches my grandmother’s inheritance without my permission,” I said, my voice quiet but laced with an authority that cut through the thick air between us.

“I’ll be back.” The words hung in the room, heavy and threatening, like a storm waiting to break.

I could see the scared look that registered on the faces of Margaret and Sophia. It gave me a twisted satisfaction to know that my words had the power to make them tremble. With a final glance at them, I reached out and shoved the front door open, the cool night air hitting my face as I stepped outside.

Declan’s voice, cold and laden with menace reached me.

“Evelyn, I’ll make you learn to behave.”

I tightened my grip on the doorknob, feeling the cold metal bite into my skin. The familiar sting of pain mixed with the rising tide of hatred for the man who had once meant everything to me and who had never once stood by me when I needed him.

I turned slightly to look back at him, my eyes hard.

Declan, go to hell.

This time, I won’t listen to you. Not ever.

With that, I shut the door behind me.

Once I rounded the corner, out of sight, I couldn’t hold it in anymore. My steps became faster, more desperate, as if the distance between me and that house would somehow lessen the weight pressing on my chest.

Finally, I climbed into the back of a taxi, the door clicking shut behind me.

I pressed a hand to my chest, my heart still racing, but there’s no love left. Only dread. Only the bitter truth that I should’ve never trusted him.

If not for Declan, my time in prison wouldn’t have carved itself into my bones the way it had. Even now, the scent of cold concrete and rusted bars sometimes flashed through my senses without warning, like phantom memories my wolf refused to let me forget.

The scenery outside the window blurred into streaks of color as the cab sped away. My throat tightened. My eyes burned. I blinked rapidly, refusing to let the tears fall. I should not cry over them, over a family that had cast me aside like a defective pup. They were not worth it.

Still… some part of me wanted to look back, just once.

I twisted slightly in my seat. The Darvin Manor which was once a place that smelled of roses, old wood, and my grandmother’s lavender tea, had shrunk to a distant speck. My chest clenched. Grandma would remain there forever, resting beneath that old cherry tree she loved. The loss hit me harder than any blow.

I had finally stood up to my mother after years of being sidelined, ignored and belittled… but instead of feeling triumphant, I felt hollow and untethered, ike a wolf exiled from her own pack.

The sting of tears returned. I forced them back with a slow inhale, letting my wolf catch the scents around me, the faint leather of the seats, the rain beginning to gather on the wind. Anything to ground myself.

This trip had cost me a day. A day, and the inheritance I should have secured… all thanks to Margaret’s interference. My jaw tightened, a low growl rumbling quietly in my chest before I swallowed it down.

I leaned into the cab seat as it headed straight to the staff dormitory where I had kept the only person that mattered to me in this world, my little pup, Lana.

Evelyn’s POV

When I arrived at the staff dormitory to pick up Lana, the tension in my body eased. The moment I stepped inside, warmth washed over me.

Kara had done wonderfully with my pub. Lana sat happily among the women on break, sporting a pink hairpin perched on her soft wispy hair. My sweet little pup looked impossibly adorable, and the women were gathered around her, cooing and teasing, their smiles bright.

My heart softened instantly. My wolf stirred gently, pleased with the sight.

“Evelyn, you’re back?” Kara spotted me first.

She scooped Lana from another woman’s arms and handed her over. Lana lit up the moment she saw me, her chubby arms reaching, her scent comforting me in ways nothing else ever could.
