“Ow,” she moaned once she managed to suck in a breath.

Sebastian grunted but didn’t lift his head from where it had landed on her shoulder. “You’re telling me.”

“You shouldn’t talk,” Taliana sighed as she stared up at the roof of his car. “I’m the one you landed on.”

“Yeah, but you’re not exactly pillow soft either.”

“Asshole.”

Sebastian sighed against her skin but didn’t attempt to shift. “Tell me something new.”

A few seconds ticked by in silence, both of them trying to gather their wits once more.

“Are you going to get off of me anytime soon?”she eventually asked, realizing they were once again pressed up against each other. They couldn’t seem to escape this position.

“Actually, you’re kind of comfortable.”

She slapped his back gently. “Glad I make a good mattress,” she snickered, letting her hands rest where they’d landed. “What are we doing out here anyway?”

“I was trying to keep you from committing murder.”

“Well, you did your job,” Taliana assured him, moving a fraction of an inch under him. “I’m not exactly feeling murderous anymore. I think you body slammed it out of me.”

“Hey, at least I did something right.”

“It’s rare, but it happens.” She paused for a second. “I can’t believe I just said that.”

“You’re warming up to me, admit it.”

“I know you’re making me hot, that’s for sure.”

The words were out of her mouth before she could think about how they sounded.

Sebastian finally lifted his head, a grin spreading across his face. “Excuse me?”

“That came out wrong,” Taliana said quickly. “I meant temperature wise, since you’re lying on top of me and it’s, like, eighty degrees outside.”

His grin only grew. “Uh huh.”

“I mean, your body is hot and-

Shit, I didn’t mean it like that either.”

“You’re just digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole.”

Taliana blew out a breath and ran a hand through her hair, looking anywhere but at him. “Maybe I should just shut up.”

“That’d probably be a good idea.”

Silence spread between them once again, but this time it felt vaguely awkward.

“So,” Taliana said softly as she forced herself to glance up at him.

The moment his eyes met Taliana’s, she couldn’t help but think back to their kiss. While it and the one before had come as a surprise and were meant to simply annoy their exes, Taliana couldn’t deny she’d felt something in those moments. Part of her wouldn’t have minded yet another repeat performance, but the logical part of her mind was quick to push that thought away.

“Can you get off me now?” Taliana asked, squirming nervously once again. “You’re heavy.”

Sebastian grinned but did as he was told. “Sorry.”

Taliana sucked in a desperately needed lungful of air as he sat up and slid out of the car. She clambered out as well and yanked down her skirt. “Well, that was…interesting. We should probably go back inside before people start making up lies about where we’ve been.”

Sebastian glanced toward the doors of the school, where a few curious people had stuck their heads out. “Ten bucks says they think we broke up.” He looked back at Taliana, worry in his eyes. “We didn’t, right? You’re still in this?”

Taliana nodded, figuring she had no other choice. Breaking this off now that Zak had sent out those pictures would’ve been pointless. She was in it for the long haul now. This was a fight she had to win.

“I’m still in this,” Taliana reaffirmed. “And twenty bucks says they think we had a quickie.”

Relief flashed through his eyes, but it was the smirk that got Taliana. “You win.”

After looking each other over for any other injuries, they made their way back into the building. As they entered, Taliana glanced toward the main office to make sure Hawthorne wasn’t standing there about to blow a gasket over her latest spree of violence, but instead of seeing the headmaster, her eyes landed on the last person she expected to see in the office.

“Is that…

Jude?”

Sebastian peeked around her shoulder and frowned when he realized who Taliana was looking at. “Yeah, it is. What the hell is he doing in there? And in the I’m-about-to-be-expelled chair, no less.”

Taliana shrugged and started toward the office door. “Let’s find out.”

Jude’s face lit up the second Taliana and Sebastian stepped inside. “Hey!” he greeted, practically shaking with excitement. “You will? not? believe what I did.”

Before he could explain, the door to the principal’s inner sanctum opened, and Zak stalked out, sporting a swollen left eye and a few cuts scattered across his face.

Taliana’s jaw went slack as she looked back to Jude, who was grinning proudly. “Did you…?”

“I couldn’t let him get away with sending those pictures, could I?” Jude laughed, shooting Taliana a wink.
